Is Rolls-Royce going to put this small nuclear reactor into a car?

No. The (non-operational) Burevestnik is an attempt to copy the US Tory II-A from 1957 which was discontinued. As a weapon it had zero shielding and with only one slight change could emit a continuous stream of highly radioactive particles to contaminate a landscape while inbound on a...

Is Rolls-Royce going to put this small nuclear reactor into a car?

No. Rolls-Royce is a very diversified company and automobiles are not the largest part so I don't know why that came to mind. It is "micro" only compared to a full scale nuclear power plant. Why would a car need a pressurized 1-10 MW power plant albeit a relatively tiny 10' x 4' in...

Model Y road trip experience with FSD 12.3.6

I agree. Once in my life I had to take a Defensive Driving course, and it amazes me that the programmers at Tesla do these obvious bone-headed things. When testing my own FSD and turning right from a four-lane onto a four-lane after a stop sign, it placed me in the outside lane every time...

MasterC17's Time Attack Build - Part Three - More Power

Does the Highland still need a brace? I thought they fixed the issue on the Model Y and assumed they would carry that redesign forward. Let us know...

    Custom 3rd brake light

I have a Model Y but my potential application is to build this into the back of my aftermarket wing. Sadly, I have soooo many projects that realistically that would be pretty far down the queue. Very neat idea, though! Kudos for the concept, effort, and execution!

    Custom 3rd brake light

Very nice! I like the flashing much like the F1 cars use. Is it also applicable to the Model Y? You state 13V operation but I assume newer 16V batteries are fine as well. For clarification, does one disassemble the existing third light and substitute in your PCB for an existing Tesla part?

Picture of your Model Y - Right Now!

Back in Dec 23 you said you ordered a kit; did these ever arrive and get installed? I place an order for same but he claims about 2 months out for delivery, and I wondered if yours fit.

    Speed vs efficiency data

I respectfully disagree. Musk et al knew that in order to sell the concept of electric vehicles they had to shake the image of being puny. Ever been in a Leaf? Ever been in a Plaid? Different philosophy at play.

    Speed vs efficiency data

Thanks for posting this; I am very weary of people posting how wrong the advertised range is compared to their experience. Later in the same post they will admit traveling at a brisk 75mph. Air resistance goes by the square of velocity so of course not, as you visually illustrate.
  10. D

    Speed vs efficiency data

I think you missed the point. The poster said in this context that "efficiency" is fraction of rated range, in other words the EPA cycle drive data, which itself is a prescribed average for peer comparison and not absolute.

    Solar power roof

The general rule of thumb is about 1KW per square meter (more or less depending upon latitude) so the solar power just isn't there. "Smarter" has nothing to do with it. I am reminded when, as a physics major, I was discussing the maximum velocity attainable in the universe is the speed of...

Nice! Good look with blacked out tail lights. (I recognize that Starbucks; had a friend who lived in RiverPoint then Village West.)

Would you Purchase a model Y Again?

I guess the "hat shelf" refers to the Parcel Shelf, which Tesla devotes and entire page to for "concealing cargo", but I don't think that will assuage him. X2 on the decaf. KoenMertens, best of luck with whatever new vehicle you choose next.

    ChargePoint home not as advertised

No worries; enjoy your ride. Thanks for the post and starting the discussion--information is never wasted. Regarding the upgrade, I definitely would have done myself, it all day long. It's the right choice!
  15. D

Would you Purchase a model Y Again?

Back to the point of the thread, my answer is a qualified yes. Maybe. The uncertainty that I feel is related to the future of the corporation which is why Musk is under discussion. While others have made excellent points about the value he grew and his potential compensation related to that...

    Any experience renting a Tesla

Before I bought my Model Y I used Turo to rent a Model 3 for a round trip from San Francisco to Los Angeles with about a 4 day stayover. The lender was fantastic, which is key. (And I learned from the adventure that I actually really needed the extra legroom on my actual purchase.)

Would you Purchase a model Y Again?

That expresses kinda how I feel. I love the car but some of the fun went out with Elon's adolescent behavior, which directly impacts Supercharging and how I perceive the company overall. I'm not a super union supporter but he really crapped on his people, and I am not buying the "shrewd...

Master cylinder brace review! Better value than MPP?

I have served as a expert witness in semiconductor IP infringement. The attorneys (ugh!) explained it to me this way: patents only exist as a license-negotiation tool. Blatant copying is widespread and if you cannot defend your work, the cost is free. If you can, the quality of your...

is Registration fee $750 in California?

Timely thread; just came in today's mail for my 2023 MYP. I actually don't mind paying given how much I am saving in gas. Much rather give money to the highway patrol, roads and bridges, and even the clerks at DMV instead of Chevron.

    ChargePoint home not as advertised

To put a nicer cap on it: congratulations! Your setup is working as expected, and if you ever add another vehicle you may yet realize the upgraded current capability then. When measured, you got 48A at 238V = 11,424W. At a different time of day the 2V voltage sag may go away and you will see...

is Registration fee $750 in California?

From Registration Fees - California DMV "Vehicle license fees decrease for your vehicle’s first 11 renewal years, or until the vehicle is transferred (whichever happens first)."

[Technical question] How does a MY go in reverse?

Even in some ICE situations, also. My Ford Escape Hybrid introduced in 2004 had no reverse gear for the gasoline nor electric engine; they simply commanded the electric backwards for reverse function. Not new but rather conventional technology.

    Ceramic Coating for Model Y

I have Xpel Prime and the warranty is pretty long at 10 years. Since labor is a big part of tint installation also consider the lack of durability of cheaper dyed film options

Local Electric Company wants EV owners to pay for upgrading neighborhood infrastructure.

That seems to go to the heart of this, and my answer is that I don't know. And I applaud the OP for checking in with them, but I don't think in my limited experience that there is much interaction between city permits and utilities (but open to being corrected). The role of the electrician...

Local Electric Company wants EV owners to pay for upgrading neighborhood infrastructure.

You are correct in that two FUD scenarios seem common: EVs will crash the grid, and charging takes ages. And I guess to be fair to the city of Eugene they may be sensitive to older homes with 100A or even 60A service and are being proactively cautious. But most homes are 200A and largely...

Local Electric Company wants EV owners to pay for upgrading neighborhood infrastructure.

I reviewed all of the above and I don't believe anybody suggested an installation without going through the permitting process. (But thank you for the cautionary note.)
  33. D

Local Electric Company wants EV owners to pay for upgrading neighborhood infrastructure.

I agree with others above. Suspend talking to the Eugene Water and Electric Board. Have an electrician evaluate the capability with your existing panel, and simply have the equivalent of a dryer or electric range service added. This should not "strain" the neighborhood (it's not a...

How are your 2024 Fremont built Ys so far in terms of interior and external quality?

Mine is fine from July 2023. I had one very, very small blemish in the paint on the hatch lid top which vanished when I had the paint corrected for ceramic.

    2024; Tesla's Tipping Point?

Some great thoughts in this thread; thanks all. I am a relatively new MYP owner of about 6 months, but grapple with what an upgrade might look like. Different styling? Not so much, this is what bugs me about ordinary carmakers superficially facelifting annually. More power? Maybe. More...

    2024; Tesla's Tipping Point?

With due respect to some of our friends who feel otherwise, I think this is the fundamental philosophical difference between a "Detroit car" and a "Silicon Valley car"; in my opinion Teslas exemplify the latter. Some argue that more driveability is called for, while others embrace more of a...

I think the Tesla Plaid S competes pretty well at Nurburgring for a boat. https://www.motortrend.com/news/tesla-model-s-plaid-production-ev-nurburgring-record-2023/ Although to be fair, the EVs are still running about a half-minute behind the exotics, and right now an upcoming Porsche Taycan EV...

M3 HV won’t charge [car bought at auction]

Good that you are having this discussion; thanks for that but sorry for the occasion. As an EE I just wanted to add data regarding lithiums in general and LiFePO4 in particular. Regarding earlier points, the 16V lithium has markedly less capacity that it's lead-acid predecessor: 6.9 Ah vs 45...

M3 HV won’t charge [car bought at auction]

Respectfully disagree. In that particular instance the LV battery is not fully connected as indicated by the ECPA not closed; the green tab has not been fully locked so the vfront is unable to read the voltage or communicate with the BMS via the pilot coms. The battery might yet be...
