Solution to carrying the spare tire

I don't doubt a spare tyre fits in the vault, but its going to be tight under the bed for space to fit a full size spare behind the rear drive unit and in front of the rear bumper. I really hope it does tho.

Will you be able to access the underside of the bed

From what I can tell from some CAD modelling, the Model S battery pack only reaches to the back of the cab. The floor on the CT is at least two cells high though, so it could be shorter. So there is some room between the battery and the rear drivetrain for tanks, if they don't put something else...

Did the prototype truck have power windows?

I noticed that whilst playing with the CAD model the windows actually need to rotate inwards around the bottom window seal whilst moving down. Otherwise currently with the angle they are on they would stick out the bottom of the steel door. Not sure how you do that with a straight window, might...

Building a home in the wilderness with this vehicle.

@coleAK Most household PV panels have open circuit voltages of over 32V, not 15V, and most decent solar inverters can handle up to 1000V DC as a input from PV panels in series. You most definitely don't need to go down to 12V DC first from solar and then back up to AC. There are also heaps of...

Cybertruck Firetruck - Can it help in Aussie Fires?

@SSedan EM said the CT weighed as much as a F150 in the reveal. I'm not as much concerned with its own weight as much as the CT ability to shift more weight and therefore water in comparison to what we have atm. A CT could easily carry 2x the water of our "ute" fire appliances. I am not...

Cybertruck Firetruck - Can it help in Aussie Fires?

@SSedan @ThomasD Thanks for the links but none of those vehicles are available, or will become available in Australia. Let alone be affordable. Just as an example a F150 can't be had for under USD$100k here. We pay $30-40k just for the driving side conversion. The CT is coming to AU and...

Why is more motors better for the average truck consumer?

I don't think "gear ratios" is relevant with primarily linear torque curves in well designed electric motors, they perform just fine without gears, particularly so if they only have a limited operating speed as they would in a CT, rather than say a Roadster . (That's why the Taycan has a 2...

Cybertruck Firetruck - Can it help in Aussie Fires?

For many years, Australia, as well as many other nations and states, have been struggling to fight fires with mobile ground assets. Most of the vehicles used are converted commercial trucks and pickups, that have limited off-road, or in particular poor sand driving ability in the bush. They also...

Why will you need a Cyber Truck?

EM said the rear bed will have HVAC and possibly access from the cab too. The shepherds (aren't they great dogs! We have 2) will have heaps of space in the back bed under the cover in heated and cooled comfort. Just need to figure out a safety/restraint system for them.

    Cybertruck design/features

I'd assume the 240V outlets will have a floating earth because the CT is mounted on rubber tyres. This means you will need to short two cables for power to flow, and not just one like on a household circuit, where the second circuit cam be through the ground. I'd also say the 240/110V outlets...

Charging off of Truck's 220 outlet

Cook when the sun shines. No batteries required. Vaccuum cooking works. Cooking is a function of air pressure not just temperature. Sucking a vaccuum uses less energy than heating. Doesn't have to be for everything but it does lower the energy used overall. Slow cooking up to 100C can be done...

    Actual length?

Yeah would be better if is was straight on the rear seat wall as well as shorter overall. Wheelbase compromises ramp over and turning circle. A full height 2m (6.5ft) bed would be great, especially for a camper on the back, for a full length sleeper, but I have a version where I made the...
  13. JBee

    Actual length?

From the Tesla CT reveal video screen behind the car. Wiki page has details too. I expect the CT to be some 6" shorter according to EMs tweet, but retain interior space and bed size of the prototype. It won't be longer. Theres more discussion on the shortened version here: Elon: We can reduce...

Will the Cybertruck Be able to tow a 5th Wheel?

@Saghost Lol true. I am wondering though if its possible to design a trailer in such a way that it either improves or at least keeps the same drag co-efficient.
  15. JBee

    Actual length?

@keeny I can confirm the current CT length is as advertised and the same as a 5.5ft bed F150 at 231.9". I've redrawn the CT on CAD using othorgonic photos from different directions and they all meet up with the dimensions given. It is rather silly to assume Tesla would advertise a vehicle with...

    New screen UI in Cybertruck

HUD stands for "Heads Up Display". It is a superimposed screen that is normally reflected off a piece of glass. It is not a dash display in front of the wheel, it's actually visible on the front windscreen. The argument can be made in the other direction as well. What makes a HUD a "worse...

Charging off of Truck's 220 outlet

@MP3Mike Well your consumption is fairly high which is the first thing to fix before going DC. Does that electricity include your climate control heating and cooling, and water heating? Passive homes are the go. Note I'm still talking about an end to end solution not a modification of legacy...

Charging off of Truck's 220 outlet

@mspohr How much power do use for HVAC heating and cooling? Because none of that should ever be stored in batteries. Water is much cheaper and better as a inter-seasonal store thermal mass. As for wiring what devices do you have that actually need 240V or 110V to run?

    New screen UI in Cybertruck

How exactly then is a M3 screen different? Because of the type of panel used (IPS, TN, VA etc) that it has a higher resolution or framerate, or better touch response etc? None of these are relevant to a focal length arguement that a HUD will fix, and a LCD screen at arms length can never do...

    New screen UI in Cybertruck

Cars are not necessary either. Neither are seat belts or airbags. But they are beneficial. There is a difference between having an idea, executing an idea, and making a idea profitable. It's a completely different arguement to determine the value of an idea, or if it should be implemented. EM...

Charging off of Truck's 220 outlet

For those that didn't bother to read the link I posted: "HVDC requires less conductor per unit distance than an AC line, as there is no need to support three phases and there is no skin effect." (Many off shore renewables use HVDC)

Charging off of Truck's 220 outlet

I'm a big Nikola fan but HVDC transmission network is a thing and works out cheaper than AC: High-voltage direct current - Wikipedia Also DC to DC potential voltage conversion is equally as trivial as DC to AC with modern "transformerless" switchmode power supplies. Each conversion has losses...

In metric the payload volume conversion to water mass is easier: 100cubic ft = 2.83 m³ Water density: 997kg/m³ (or roughly 1kg/L) 2.83 x 0.997 = 2.82 metric tons = 3.10 US tons While we're at it we can roughly work out the draft of the CT when used as an amphibious vehicle: CT Displacement...

    Doubting Price is real!

@Wshowell For any pressure to be applied to any other manufacturer would require Tesla to fabricate enough CTs and sell enough CTs. 50k CTs wouldn't do that in any form as it's a drop in a bucket. One thing we must readjust our beliefs on is the fact that EM is NOT doing it for the money. That...

    Doubting Price is real!

@Barklikeadog I haven't been part of a M3 discussion and only joined with the CT release. But I was mostly aware of what was going on. It's not unusual for any business to try to get customers through the door with a budget version and then upsell them with options. That is even the case at...

    New screen UI in Cybertruck

Lol ok. Not much of an argument. The model 3 screen and position is no different to any other car. How about a switcheroo...go and drive a car with a in dash screen and a HUD to compare. You'll see exactly what I mean. :-)

Charging off of Truck's 220 outlet

@Cosmacelf I know, but I still wasn't that happy about it. :-( We need a more integrated solution that is end to end. It just seems to make sense if solar, batteries and even PM motors are DC. I'm expecting a proliferation of DC appliances using batteries instead of cabled 240V, similar to...

    Doubting Price is real!

    @Barklikeadog How do you mean?
  31. JBee

    New screen UI in Cybertruck

The main reason for the HUD is the fact your eyes don't need time to refocus from the screen to the road. At arms length the screen is to close to see both the outside road and keep the screen in focus to read it. The depth of field on a proper HUD makes it look like the screen is superimposed...

    Doubting Price is real!

Double the size, materials, features and range imply double the cost. None of these are doubled. Likewise none of the costs, if claimed or not. There are genuine savings in development and manufacturing, let alone the materials used, which all make the CT price possible. The likelihood of any...

    New screen UI in Cybertruck

Needs a HUD and something to rest your hand on when trying to touch the screen on bumpy roads when driving in the CT. Trying to use touchscreens can be a real chore off-road. Something like the bar on the bottom of the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule would do, so that using the menu bar is easier...

Charging off of Truck's 220 outlet

With a CT you can do that straight out if you plug in the Powerwall to the 240V output. But I completely agree that Tesla needs to integrate the devices a bit better. Powerwall should have a EV charger interface, as well as a secondary 240V input source connection integrated, or as a additional...

    Doubting Price is real!

CT Tailgate: what about the ute bed itself? CT Bedcover: what about the towing capacity and off-road suspension setup? CT Tyres: Agreed CT Lights: I'd expect the light bars to be cheaper than the M3. The light enclosures cost more than the LEDS themselves. CT LEDs are far simpler, the top one...

    Doubting Price is real!

Doubling the size of everything, and with it the prices is a fairly poor way of making a pricing assumption. The vehicle is not double the mass, length, frontal area and therefore also doesn't require double the drivetrain (batteries/motors etc) to propel it. Twice the functionality is also a...

Charging off of Truck's 220 outlet

What size solar do you have? 7-10kW? Thats a fair bit of consumption overall. We average 15kWh a day during the summer, with A/C, and under 20kWh during the winter with heating using A/C. But its a mild climate here. If the consumption is from heating and cooling then most of that can be...

Charging off of Truck's 220 outlet

Nothing special about using a h-bridge inverter bidirectionally for battery charging and 240V output. Reprogramming someone elses hardware MCU can be however, as these are mostly unrecoverable machine code. The real question is why Tesla hasn't done it before. I've said this previously, but...

You ever camped out in an air-conditioned heated tent with internet access?

Also a good way to keep your pets in the back happy without having them destroy your cab. Self presenting doors?

lol delivery vans have had electric sliding doors for ages. On the subject of the CT doors I hope they don't make the doors too long, as with the extra width they're going to be difficult to open in parking spots. Forward and rearward sliding doors would fix that...but that ain't going to...

Charging off of Truck's 220 outlet

An bi-directional inverter charger can do voltage, current and frequency matching on the fly. In fact any solar inverter needs to do this to "follow the grid" otherwise it would be disconnected by the protection circuits. I'd imagine they'd tap the main battery, and not use another battery that...
  45. JBee

    Self presenting doors?

If anything I'd not charge because every battery cycle degrades them. The battery hatch hinge or lock is way less expensive in comparison. The longest lasting battery is the one you don't use much. :-)

Yep ok. Two dual CT and a tri in two different countries atm. What don't you like about air suspension? I have 16ton trucks, Discos, landcruisers and they are all fine so far. Road corrigations make them fatigue, but nothing a bag swap won't fix. I'm also thinking they can't use the MX setup...
