2012 P85 HV battery replacement options -- need perspective.

Yes, it's a 90 kWh pack. Tesla software rebadged my car on the screens as a "P90" which was a happy little surprise. I'm beginning to look at back-up batteries for my house and the solar array soon to be installed. Interestingly, a 16 kWh pack from LG costs between $8000 - $11,000. Maybe I'm...

2012 P85 HV battery replacement options -- need perspective.

Update: the new 1014116-00-C pack installed end of August 2022 showed 297/298 miles range at 100% SOC when brand new. Now, with 10,600 miles on the battery, I charged to 100% to see range and it showed 292, so there is about 2% degradation. Charging has been roughly 60% at home at 20 - 40 amps...

@Droschke; @blodg1; @wk057 ; @lightningltd ; @gaswalla ; @danielk04 ; @ElectricIAC ; @dark cloud ; To my great surprise, after two weeks of diligently but politely pushing Tesla to unlock my battery (via the app and scheduling calls with reps), I discovered that Tesla did so, probably last...

2012 P85 HV battery replacement options -- need perspective.

It wasn't useful: the rep told me his role is to explain to owners what factors affect range, like cold weather, heavy foot, etc., and he advised me to request service again on the app, providing details. He said his notes would support my case and that it would go up the food chain. Did so...

Ha! You're right, I'm sure. I should stop chewing this over and get back to my actual work.... Agree, the 270 is very nice and completely workable for my purposes.

2012 P85 HV battery replacement options -- need perspective.

@JoshK Josh, the jury is still out, and will be for some years, about whether my decision to drop $20K on my 2012 S was a decent move. The preponderance of feedback was that it would be foolhardy given the reliability issues of the earliest Teslas. However, there was also feedback from an owner...

@Droschke , @gaswalla, @lightningltd, @wk057, Charging update: Supercharged this morning, only car at 8-bay station, 64F, car had preconditioned battery for 12 minutes before arrival, began with 193 miles range and pulled 68 kW / 228 mi/hr. At 98% SOC pulled 32 kW / 107 mi/hr; at 99% same rate...

2012 P85 HV battery replacement options -- need perspective.

Wow, this is fascinating. So the pack is physically the same as the original 85 kW battery but the improved cell chemistry results in range of +/- 297 vs. the original 265 in the early RWD cars? But I actually didn't pay for a new 85 battery; I paid for a new 90 battery. My question prior to...

2012 P85 HV battery replacement options -- need perspective.

The suspension upper link assemblies p/n 1027421-00-E were installed on my car with the new battery -- when questioning I was told this was required with the new battery. My invoice states "90 kW" -- I'm just going to insist that they told me they were selling me a 90 kW battery with 280 miles...

@Droschke , Thanks, very helpful. I will note these things and report back. It's definitely interesting that we both get precisely 270 -- this suggests to me that the batteries are software limited despite their assurance that it wouldn't be. I've messaged them and I'm going to press this issue...

2012 P85 HV battery replacement options -- need perspective.

@wk057 , This is very interesting info, thank you -- The car was first charged to 100% just as I picked it up from the SC. Since it showed 269, not 280, I had the rep put a note in the system that I am concerned that the range is not what I was promised. I think I will now go back to them about...

2012 P85 HV battery replacement options -- need perspective.

@tlP85 ,@Droschke, @Slumpp1, So here's the update: Tesla did respond to my queries and assured me that the new battery capacity and supercharging rates would not be capped. They told me I could expect 100% SOC range of 280 rated miles. I dropped my car at the SC on Aug 24 and got a Model Y...

2012 P85 HV battery replacement options -- need perspective.

No, because all they have to do with a battery replacement under warranty is honor the original 8 year warranty, which in my case ended December of 2020. When someone pays out of pocket for a battery, the 4/50 warranty kicks in.

2012 P85 HV battery replacement options -- need perspective.

No, not new -- I misspoke -- it was a remanufactured battery, 85 kWh, 400V, p/n 1088815-01-D. Installed July 2020, five months from warranty ending. The fact that it failed 25 months later is basically all the reason I need to avoid putting a "remanufactured" battery into the car -- for $6500...

2012 P85 HV battery replacement options -- need perspective.

This is an issue for me with owning a Tesla -- the secretiveness about the car's service history. 2012 P85 HV battery replacement options -- need perspective.

So here's a different way of framing my dilemma: My car with bad battery is worth something in the low to middle teens, for the sake of argument let's say $14,000. I bought it in March for $29,000 and the second the BMS-u029 warning appeared on the dash it lost about half it's value. That...

Thanks all for chiming in. I think I can accept the risk of having a *very* expensive 2012 Model S -- I don't view the car as a savings account and am trying to get a handle on which makes more sense, a smaller investment to return the car to it's former state with a fairly tired battery, or a...

I've asked Tesla if they will take it in trade toward a new car and am waiting to hear back. But I'm leaning toward keeping it and holding off on purchasing a new car -- my motorcycle is 22 years old (BMW R1100S), my glider is 37 (DG-400), my sailboat 25 (Beneteau Oceanis 40CC), and my airplane...

This is definitely a consideration. What do I do with the MS in that scenario? Will Tesla take it in trade? However, your suggestion requires that I come up with 47K, plus NYS sales tax of 8.75% , not 11.5 K or 21K, or possibly less if I work with a third party shop, and that is not a trivial...

    FS: Model S Roof Rack

Hi -- Can you describe the process of mounting the roof rack -- can it go on and come off easily, or is it more practical to put it on and leave it on? Curious, because I would like to occasionally move materials on the roof rack but won't want it in place all the time. Thanks--

Thanks very much -- that is really interesting and good to know. Hello All, First post here from new owner of a 2013 MS85, seeking a "reality check." I bought my used Model S on July 7th, with 80K miles. I am enthralled with the car, having waited years to be able to afford a used one. However, on the drive home from the dealership, the MCU went black and...

7 years later what is your 100% on your 85kWh battery?

Gents, Following up: the dealer charged the car with their Tesla charger, and it came up to a 96% SOC showing 223 miles. The charger would not take it beyond that percentage. 100% charge would equal 232 miles, or slightly more than an 11% degradation from the rated 265 mile range when new. I...

7 years later what is your 100% on your 85kWh battery?

Jerry, thanks for that data point. I would be very happy if this Model S shows range like yours did. Taking your formula, an 11% loss should show 236 miles of range. If range is much below that should I pass on the car? I'm not clear that what I was referring to is balancing the cells -- I had...

Hello All, Newb question here: I am likely going to buy a very nice 7/2013 Model S with 80,000 miles later today. I inspected it at a small used dealership yesterday and love it.
