You should be able to shake your car through pulling pushing each leg of each cross bar and the whole thing should stay tight. If it does not, you likely have a broken clip.

One of my clips snapped too. Had not seen this thread before I posted one on this very problematic safety issue. Looks like they need to revisit the design/composition of these clips given how critical they are to road safety.
