2019.16 Update

Just as a reminder, the ‘stop at Tesla SC to use WiFi’ hasn’t worked in years. You need to be on a service ticket to get the advantage.

I don't think he was saying that he gets an update because of the Tesla SC WiFi, he is just saying that the Tesla SC WiFi is the only WiFi available to him, so he uses it to download the updates once they are made available to his car.

I just got 2019.12.1.2 a few days ago, I had to use tethering from my phone for it to start downloading the update.
The car WILL NOT download any updates unless connected over WIFI.
Also, I think the "forced updates" are not actually forced, its just that you will be able to see when there is one available to download so that you can connect to a wifi network to start it.
But Tesla will still control who gets it first ! :p
Nonsense. The first Model 3's including mine VIN 5xxx did not even have wifi connectivity as an option for the first few months until a firmware update -- and I definitely received updates. When I purchase my S three years ago I had no wifi in my garage but received updates.

It may very well be true that having wifi will help your car connect and download -- and thereby get updates to your car in a more timely fashion. I have heard this claim but don't know if it is true or not as I have received timely updates both ways. It also may be true that one of the very bright young Tesla techs will tell you that wifi is required.

“Sorry for the inconvenience. We’re aware of this glitch & it’s fixed, but software updates wait for a WiFi connection. Policy has been changed to push updates like this over cell connection sooner.”

Yep, you will get them either way. It isn't surprising that WiFi is preferred, but apparently over the air is "sooner" than it used to be. Yet in the early days of Model 3 when WiFi wasn't available, it seems to me I got them faster than my S did via WiFi. Of course focus had been on Model 3 since its inception.

It showed on the car while I was driving from SF to LA and now I have 450 miles so you are right it showed somewhere on 300 miles
Awesome. Anything new? Do you have HW 3? You must. There’s lots of inquiring minds here that want to know. Enjoy your car and keep us posted.

Most of all of my Updates have crashed at the end and it gives me contact Tesla service dept so I am getting the firmware number but not getting the new feature, and when I do get the features they disappear a few minutes after... I have a Service appointment on the 21st of May and hopefully they can figure it out.

I have hw3 car was built on 29 April.

I do not know, I am in hotel and left my car at valet parking last night and update it after but will not be taking it today, cheers, tomorrow going back to SF and will see if any difference

How can you tell the exact day of build? My car shows 5/2019. I took delivery on 5/3/19. The woman I spoke to on the phone on 5/2 said it was built on May 1st since it left Fremont factory the day before.

Btw- on 12.1.2 since delivery with 194 miles on it.

Your delivery specialist (or someone else at tesla) will have to tell you the "born on" day, which is the cars build day. So, if they told you 5/1, that means it exited the build process on 5/1 and you took delivery on 5/3. There is no other way to see it electronically that I am aware of currently... but that could have changed.

Tesla does not have nearly as much available information about the car as, say BMW (which I am familiar with). on a BMW you can use an online vin decoder and get accurate information about car build date, options, etc. I bolded "accurate" because as far as I have read. tesla model 3 vin decoders are not particularly accurate as far as options in car.
