2024 or 2025 Model X?

Hi all,
I have been in model 3 for the past 6 years and 95k flawless miles on FSD - fantastic experience. Not a single repair or fault! Now am in the market for an SUV and looking at the X and R1S Long range (refresh model). They both have plus and minus’s but my question to the members here is regarding the reliability of the newer model X’s. I see so many posts with funky FWD problems, seat’s freezing or getting stuck, air suspension issues etc., Are the problems mostly with the older builds and 2023,24 onward are better? Your input is very much appreciated.

I have a 2022/23 X and have not had a lot of issues. The biggest one is rattling noises. It seems to happen most when the car is cold and seems to be a wire loose behind the driver display. It usually goes away when the car warms up. Other than that, the car is a dream to drive. Quick and nimble and typical Tesla amazing acceleration.

I personally would not buy any electric car/suv than Tesla, not for a few years anyway.

I would suggest you drive the Rivan and read/watch as many reviews as you can.
It's always anecdotal, but I have a rivian and an S and the rivian is excellent, now with the nacs supercharger adapter they have no charging problems with driving long distance. I've only had a few minor issues with the rivian, similar to what what my S had.

Hi @Seattle, I am in fact looking at R1S(new version) vs 2024/5 X ! I like the higher clearance R1S(for going off the road on occasion or going on gravel or forest roads, BLM lands and such). I plan on road tripping and very much interested in range- both about the same (large pack), but what’s your experience with real world mileage? 70-75 cruising.
I have FSD and hoping to transfer to X and the total savings and price difference is weighing in favour of the X. You’re thoughts?

Its messy. I have the truck, not the SUV. Generally it's great. And they have conserve mode as an option. They have 3 batteries, 3 diff tires, 3 diff motors. Remember the EPA tests aren't going 70 mph. Tires for off-road are notably worse than most efficient ones.

The truck gets about 2 miles per kwh, way worse eff than Tesla but bigger battery. The quad has 700+ horsepower, 0 to 60 about 3. It's overpowered...

EPA combined range 21" tires was 314, 70 mph was 254, that sounds about right, from this article. https://insideevs.com/reviews/588696/rivian-r1t-range-test-review/

I’ve had one Tesla and one non Tesla (various combinations) side by side for 5 years now and really never understand this advice for the majority of people.

Statistically most people (70% in the US) have access to home charging and drive like 40mi a day anyway. The mythical “road trip” people bang on about, again statistically, happens once or twice a year and is less than 500mi.

Yes the CCS network generally sucks, but most of this is emotional for the vast majority of people (again, per data), unless they know for a fact that their regular driving patterns would really demand the SC network, or they don’t have home charging, etc.

Tesla of course has many great benefits, but the designs certainly don’t appeal to everyone (I tolerate them), build quality remains uneven at best as does the service experience, they lack certain popular features (now including indicator stalks), their materials are just “ok”, etc. There’s lots of reasons to branch out and try something different. Everyone I know who has one (six folks) is absolutely in love with their Rivian.

drove a R1S, rides like an off road truck. Like the ride of the X around town better. The regen on the RIvian is too much also, not sure if you can adjust it tho

We've had our 2024 X for 7 months (after having a 2017 X for 6 years). That's not long, but so far no issues at all.

I've had a 2023 R1S for just over a year. It came with a bent harness pin so the 120V outlets didn't work at first, but that was fixed under warranty and no other issues with that one.

The R1S ride wasn't great at first. But they've put out 3 firmware updates to address it, and driving around here our X and R1S seem to have pretty comparable ride quality. The 2025 R1S is supposed to have better hardware.

We use the X for road trips (just the two of us), around town just the two of us, and when getting kids in and out of the car (the falcon wing doors are no help for adults, but are nice with small kids). We use the R1S for towing (the X can tow, but the R1S is better at it), when we have cargo, and when we go different directions. I like that the X is more efficient; but the R1S has a bigger battery and the range estimates are really close to what we get, whereas we can never meet the X's estimates.
