A Mostly Positive CPO Experience

Just picked up my '15 S on Saturday. Just thought I'd drop some positivity on a mostly sour topic these days.

I've read so many horror stories about the used Tesla buying experience it almost steered me away from pursuing it out. With that said, it also prepared me for the worst. Total time from start to finish for me was 2 weeks, that was with outside financing through a local CU. Although my S was already in a local storage facility, so no wait on shipping which seems to be an issue for a lot of people.

My SA, Elizabeth, was amazing. She responded to every email I sent within a couple hours, and had actual responses that gained traction in the deal. The only hiccup was she said typical turn around time was 7-10 days for a delivery specialist, and when I emailed her on the 11th or 12th day, she responded almost immediately and a delivery advisor called me later that same day. Delivery Specialist was Wing, and even after we initially scheduled a pickup, he was responsive and answered a call after 6PM when I wanted to change the pickup location.

On delivery day, I was met half way between where I live and the Fremont facility. Apparently the Fremont location is no longer open to the public? We met by a Tesla showroom in Walnut Creek, CA. Worth noting, the young lady who's name escapes me, called me when she was about an hour away and then again when she was close the showroom. When she arrived, the car was beautiful. There was no rush to sign any paperwork, and she let me inspect the car inside and out. I wouldn't say a deep detail was done, but everything interior and exterior was super clean. There is evidence that they even cut and polished a couple of the quarter panels by way of some left over polish on the diffuser and in the gap between the bumper. Car fax showed 1 owner no accidents so maybe just some dings? Paperwork was fully prepped so I signed and handed over the check. She only had one key for me, but assured me she was getting one more ordered and it would be waiting for me at my nearest service center within a couple weeks. Drove away and tested the acceleration and autopilot on the way home. Haven't had a *sugar* eating grin on my face driving a car since I had a '67 Camaro, but I did that day.

So if you are thinking about doing the CPO thing, my advice is do a ton a research and read the forums to prep. But go for it. You can get a killer deal with a warranty through Tesla.

TL;DR
Lots of people having bad experience with CPOs. I had the mostly the opposite. Good communication, car was clean and showed up as pictured in the photos. Be patient in selection, but I'd do it again in a heart beat.

Enjoy! I'm so happy you shared this story. I like hearing the good things Tesla does do everyday. :)

Keep in mind that the 'CPO' scheme ended a while ago, they are now just 'Used' and have passed a mechanical inspection, that is all.

Perpetuating the 'CPO' myth is a little unhelpful, but glad the used car purchase worked out for you of course.

I understand where you are coming from, and you're right. Although it's still much better than buying a used car off some random lot. If anything I'd call it a hybrid of CPO and used car. I've bought plenty of cars form dealers, including CPO BMWs and Mercedes and other brand new cars. CPO or not, the experience I had was better than at other dealerships.

From what I can tell, Tesla has greatly improved the CPO process with better quality cars, better photos, and more upfront details about the car. This is great for both Tesla AND their customers.

So glad to hear OP's story about a good experience!

Tesla should turn around these CPO cars as quickly as they can so they are not absorbing added depreciation. Will alos make for new and happy Tesla owners :)

Congrats! Fingers crossed that this is a sign that they've actually made some systemic improvements that will benefit all used Tesla customers. As you point out, it does seem that things tend to go awry when dealing with a car that has to be transported.

Curious- you mentioned meeitng "by a showroom". Does that mean that you had the car delivered on the street somewhere near a showroom or was it actually in the showroom?

Yeah there is a "Tesla Showroom" where they have all their products on display as well as associates in the store who can educate you and I assume sell you whatever you desire. They have one of each of the 3 current models of cars parked in there, as well as some prop solar panels, a power wall, etc. Unfortunately the showroom wouldn't actually fit the delivered vehicle. We met in a parking space nearby.

There is no 'CPO process' and there are no 'CPO cars' not even Tesla refer to them as 'CPO' any more they just call them 'used'...

Ha- yeah I know what a TEsla showroom looks like. Was just confused by the description-- was wondering why they cared about meeting near a showroom since your car wasn't actually delivered (or even prepped) there? Guess it just happened to be near the halfway mark.

Ah my misunderstanding. Yeah I told them we would meet at the specific shopping center halfway between us, on the way they brought up meeting in front of the show room. it was pretty much exactly half way

It's could to read about a positive experience buying a Tesla used car. Many of us who had a less then good outcome seem to be more vocal.

Come on let's here about the times it went well. The more positive the Tesla image is in all areas the better it is for all owners.

I took delivery of my 12,004 miles 2015 S85D in San Diego CA on April 3, 13 days after putting in my deposit. My Sales Advisor was of no help! The Delivery Advisor did all the work. The car was cleaned and looked awesome. There was a, not clearly visible, 2” dent/scratch on the hood which I could not see in the pictures I was sent. The delivery person in San Diego said you could see it in one of the photos, I certainly couldn’t. Since otherwise the car was in such mint condition and had so low miles, we accepted delivery. Back home, the Plano, TX Service Center recommended a paintless dent repair guy (PDR) that did an incredible job which cost me $250. I ordered a color kit from Dr. Color Chip and the scratch totally disappeared! Tesla could have fixed the dent, but chose not to. I simply LOVE this vehicle! My dream car.

I have a 2013 S60 I bought from the CPO program in 2016. For me it was a fabulous experience, and it continues to be. I bought the car with 22,000 miles and I'm just over 60,000 right now. I have only had two problems: the tire pressure sensors were replaced and the touch screen was replaced. The Tesla SC handled replacing both wonderfully. I have 15 months or 12,000 miles left on my warranty and supercharging for life. I couldn't be happier with my S.

I think in 2016 the true CPO program was still in place, so good on you for capitalizing early. You were rewarded! Inspections were much more thorough and the cars were refurbished as essentially new through the service centers. Unfortunately these days the resell of Teslas through the company isn't as robust. Lots of things seems to slipping through the cracks.
