I would say it is logical from Tesla's perspective that they would first like to see how many orders they get for the 90 and "milk that cow" as long as they can. Once they are 2-3 months away from running out of enough orders to fill the production lines, they'll introduce the smaller model. I don't believe that requires much preparation and it may very well be they are still road testing the smaller pack to finalize the exact "size".

What does that mean in simple $ terms?

This is still a moving target with no specifics. Assuming 90 kWh batteries (and of course AWD on the X) the base price will be close to $100k with only minor options added.

As others asked: Will there ever be a battery option smaller than 90 kWh? Even if one appears, I doubt we will see deliveries of smaller batteries before 2017 given the delays.

Otherwise, the 90 kWh size could remain the basic battery option forever on the heavy X.

Any speculation as to when we will see other battery options available?
Speculation:
1. They have 30K+ reservations today, of which 25K are good - 5K will get an S or their money back.
2. They'll be reserving another 2K/month until release, then it will grow to 4K/month over 2016.
3. 2/3 of reservation will be the big battery.
4. They'll only deliver Signatures in 2015.
5. They'll deliver at least 15K 90kWh in the 1st half of 2016.
6. They'll introduce the small, 75kWh battery in 2nd half of 2016 and upgrade to 95kWh big battery towards the end of next year for X and S.

Sounds completely plausible.

Based on Elon's tweet it does seem certain, at least to me, that there will be a smaller battery available for the X some time next year that will enable Tesla to offer a base X for $5K more than a base S.
It would seem sensible for Tesla to just offer two battery sizes for the S and the X and that the sizes would be the same for each model.
Personally I think that in the near future Tesla will drop the 85 and offer just the 70 and 90 for both models, and then later next year boost them to 75 and 95.

I was told the number 80 a couple of times last night.

I was at the reveal event, and I'm surprised someone else who was there hasn't already posted what I'm about to say. There were people around in black "model X" shirts. And I tried asking some of them for inside information and it was apparent they didn't know anything. But then, waiting in line for the test drive, a guy in a shirt heard us talking and started talking to us. Oh, I should say that we heard while getting in line from another guest that the drivers (it's not actually a test drive but more a test ride) are tesla engineers and you need to just start asking as many questions as you can while in there. So anyway, I think this guy in line was an engineer cuz it was immediately apparent he knew more than other workers I had asked and was kinda willing to answer stuff. So I started laying into him with questions and pretty soon I was like Ugh, Elon only mentioned a 90 and a P90! So that puts the base price higher than 80! And I swear the guy was like no...it's 80. He said Elon was announcing the options that are currently available to sig reservations. And I was like oohh ok so there WILL be a 70d then. To which he said...yeeah...well...or something maybe bigger. Indicating that maybe it will be a 75d but the message felt pretty clear that the base price is 80.

then, while on the test drive I also got the driver to say 80. I also pressed about the pano roof and was like, well what about that? Is that a freebie? Meaning, if that's standard on every X, do you equate that to the pano roof on the S and hence will the base be 81.5? I never managed to get him to say yes the pano glass is standard (his answer was something like "does it really matter" lol. But the number 80 was reiterated.

i think it was pretty clear what I was asking. I can't remember everything I said last night but for sure I tried to come at this as many ways I could in the short times I had. And I heard 80. I don't know if this is enough to put any of you reading at ease :) but for me, if the base price of whatever they come out with, be it a 70d or 75d isn't $80k then I'll be surprised.
It will be a mental hurdle and somewhat financially uneasy for me if its not 80k. Somehow the 100k mark is still a BIG number for a car for younger folks like me with not so much dough in the kitty(yet).:frown:

Yep, I'm starting to get an uneasy feeling about this as well. I've had my reservation for almost three years and now I'm looking at the probability that I'm going to have to spend 15-20k more than I've been planning on this whole time. I get the concept of how that might be best for Tesla business wise but after waiting all this time it looks like I may have to at least defer which will be very disappointing.

In today's conference call, Elon and company continued to dodge attempts to clarify what the base price of what Model X will be. They continued to reiterate "$5k more than a comparable Model S". They were further asked what was included in "comparable", and Elon specifically mentioned battery pack size and then threw in "number of seats" under his breath. I take this as a pretty good confirmation that the $5,000 does NOT include the cost of the third row seats, and to compare it to a Model S you need to add in the cost of a 90D AND third row seats, which equals $91,000. Thus, the base price of Model X will most likely be $96,000 until they come out with a smaller battery pack.

+1. I was thinking the exact same thing. He wouldn't specifically have mentioned "number of seats" unless it figured into the calculations of base price for the X. I'd be happier with a base price of $93K for the Model X 90D but wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being $96K. Shouldn't have too long to wait now to find out... I predict first wave of invitations to configure regular production this week or next.

I listened to the call. I clearly heard Elon state that it was public knowledge that he had already said about $5,000 above a comparable Model S. One of the analysis didn't understand and asked an "awkwardly" worded question whether that included the seats, battery, etc. Elon said yes... in a low voice... all of the things in a comparable Model S -- battery upgrade, seats, etc. I didn't get the impression the question was "dodged". I was surprised the analyst didn't understand the first time the question was answered, but then realized these guys aren't watching the forums or design centers everyday. I concluded Elon and others only clarified the answer that it was approx. $5K above a comparable Model S -- mumbled in a low voice -- yes, battery, yes seats, yes other options that could be done on an S.

If you follow the logic to the best known price of a Signature Series X, it comes about $5K above a Model S at $132K (w/o Ludicrous). No surprise there at all. No intent to avoid the question IMO.

Also note that the letter confirmed that they are planning on adding a smaller battery size Model X option (although it didn't specify what that size would be--70, 80, whatever) in 2016. So there should eventually be a Model X configuration that's really about $5K more than the bottom end Model S--it just won't be available in the Signature run, and may not be available in early production models (they haven't indicated yet).

I think it'll be more than $5k exrtra on base S. The base S is a 70 RWD at $70K, I'm assuming all X's will be awd $5K, add $3K for rear seats, plus the extra $5K = $83K for the base X @ 70 pack. Who knows if they'll keep the 70 pack or bump it up to 75 and how that plays into pricing.

I'm thinking now since Tesla seems to like rounding the base price to even numbers, the 90D will start at $95,000 and P90D will start at $115,000, plus destination and doc fee. At some point next year they will add 75D for $85,000.

Reading the transcript from last night, they quoted Elon as saying, "Well, just what I mentioned publicly, which is that we expect similarly equipped Model X to be no more than $5,000 greater than the price of Model S." This leaves open the possibility of the increase not being a full $5,000.

So you think referral X models will be 95,000????
