Charging EV in Greece - Advice please

I will be heading to Greece in the summer for a few weeks in our UK Tesla. Can anyone give me advice on what apps and or charge cards I need to sign up for to be able to charge (beyond the superchargers) in Greece?

I have seen some Blink chargers, but they appear to need an RFID card or app (that is not available on UK app store). So I am not sure how easy these will be able to get onto for international travelers.

Thanks

👋 from Greece! You need some apps to charge in the most 50kw DC fast chargers. The one app is "Incharge" - with this you have access to DC and AC Chargers in Shell & Avin gas stations and the other "ElpeFuture" for access in EKO and BP gas stations (fewer than Incharge spots). Also you will need DEIBlue application - it have AC chargers in all AB Grocery stores as well as DC chargers in Ikea Thessaloniki, Athens and in the airport of Athens.

Have a great trip!

We'll also be driving to Corfu next summer in a MY SR, up to now we've been doing it in der diesel. The advice above is very useful for when we get to Greece, but does anyone have any advice for how to make it across the North Macedonia gap? It's 470km from the last supercharger in Aleksinac to Veria in northern Greece. The roads of Serbia charger at the toll plateau in Presevo seems to be northbound only and 22kw. The EVN network in North Macedonia seems to be for locals only?

I looked in the Nis, Serbia Supercharger site today. There are currently 4 stalls. The hotel was taken over by a different family a couple of years ago, and I spoke with them. For many years the hotel has specialised in catering to Turks doing the run between Germany & Netherlands to Turkey. Apparently they are trying to attract a wider clientee now. At Eur 50/night for perfect spotless rooms I', sure they'll get custom.

Any way, the point is that this site is due to get another 6 stalls in 3-4 months, at least that is what Tesla has told the owners. I'd have thought either 4 or 8 more was more likely. It is hard to avoid this site if one is doing the run across Serbia.

(Tesla Supercharger - Bosphorus Hotel : charging station in Aleksinac, Serbia )

(EDIT : This is the one at the Hotel Bosphorus. It is located at cut-outs in the fence. This means one can use it whilst still on the toll highway if driving south. If driving north one must exit the toll highway a few miles earlier, then drive to the non-motorway section of the hotel Bosphorus car park and use it. Then later rejoin the toll highway)

[**** I'm about to report my own post as there needs to be some sort of eastern Europe section on TMC, there currently isn't one ****]

Mod coment: message received - I'll ask the more senior people about a Eastern Europe section, but you should be able to create a thread under "Europe" and not one of the regions in the mean time. There is already one for Turkey.

I drive UK <> Greece about four times per year.

Next year I hope to get a Tesla model 3, SR.

I am trying to figure out the best way to get from the Nis charger (at the Bosphorus hotel) to Thessaloniki. I normally drive straight through North Macedonia on the E75, entering at Presevo and exiting at Gevgelia. What charger solutions do you recommend ? For a model 3 SR it seems advisable to not push it more than 200-250km in case of bad weather etc.

I then drive on the E90 for Thessalonika - Ionnanina - Preveza. If you have any helpful charger suggestions that would be great.

So if you come up with a solution then please tell me. Or if you have any questions I can check out on the ground please ask.

The Ionnina Supercharger is supposed to be open early 2024. But who really knows. The Thessalonika one has now disappeared from the 'pending' map.

Just an idea:
And anothet one:
1. Sofia, Bulgaria | Tesla
2. Fines Charging - the fastest EV charging network in Bulgaria
That was a very helpful suggestion. I've voted for both Skopje (Macedonia) and Ionnanina (Greece) but am failing somewhat in understanding the real location of the Thessalonika (Greece) options. Here is what I see - what do you see ? It looks to me as if there is no possibility of voting for the genuine Thessalonika.

The Skopje to Ionnanina leg is either 450km or 415km depending which way you do it, so it would seem very sensible to have one in Thessalonika. Which is (from memory) Greece's second largest city and would also help for the Athens (GR) <> Sofia (BG) run.

So ... how does one actually vote for Thessalonika ?

We'll be getting an MYLR now which will take a little of the pain out of the Nis to Thessaloniki run. I expect the MYLR range will be similar to the M3 SR.
We've refined our plan, mainly based on Plugshare comments. Although we'll charge at the Bosphorus, we'll charge again at the Ledi charger in Brestovac. It's no longer free but it's 389km from Ikea Thessaloniki, 40km closer than the Bosphorus. OMV northbound at Doljevac has a good charger, but it's northbound only so when you're heading south it's not as beneficial as the Brestovac one.
We'll check out the AC charger at the Presevo peage (ask the toll guys to open the median barrier to cross over). This is more for research on the return trip, Plugshare doesn't have very positive reviews for this charger. We're going to keep going straight through Macedonia. I've zero wish to drive a new car in Skopje. The only time I've driven there before, we were plagued by very aggressive cigani with filthy squeegies at all the major junctions on the outskirts.
The DC charger just before the Gevgelija crossing gets good reviews and I expect we'll be able to get enough there to be able to push on at full speed to Thessaloniki and beyond to Amoulliani. But if it's not working, we should have gotten enough from Brestovac/Presevo to either limp on to Thess or to go via Kilkis and charge at BP there.

On the SUC voting, I'd be hopeful that a strong showing for Thessaloniki this time around will motivate Tesla to install there. Ionnina only finished in the top 50 in Q1 voting, but Tesla nevertheless took note and is planning one now.

Can you please write up your experiences on this section after you've done the trip(s). That would be much appreciated.

You can try Plugshare to locate charging stations throughout your trip. I usually locate charging stations from Plugshare and check reviews to select a charging station that suits my EV.

Find your charging stations here:

Also, you can charge from any J1772 charger, but you'll need an adapter (SAE J1772).

Will be crossing the Macedonian gap on Thursday, plan remains more or less the same. Will charge to 100% in Brestovac to give us a Plan C of getting to Ikea in Thessaloniki. Plan A is the top up at the upgraded charger at the Presevo peage, and plan B is to slow charge at Gevgelija if we have a spare half an hour. The fast charger there has been out of order for the past week. My wife has suggested a plan D of OMV in Vranje, but they're very expensive compared to all other operators, so I'd be reluctant to use them.

Plan C it was in the end. We're mightily glad we got an MY LR instead of an RWD, and this specific leg of our trip was one of the reasons we went with the LR.
Charged last night to 80% at the Crowne Plaza in Belgrade. They charge 200 Din (€1.50) for an hour of parking. But as well as slow A/C chargers, they have a 75kW DC charger. We took on board 50kWh in 50 minutes and when I went in to pay, the receptionist said it was ok, need to pay and raised the barrier for us.

I forgot the advice on Plughsare and followed the Tesla nav to the Aleksinac SuC. That brings you needlessly off the mainline 5km early. There's a motorway exit specifically for the Hotel Bosphorus. The 125 kW Tesla chargers can be accessed just as easily from the motorway side. On no account use the Istanbul restaurant toilets, use the Bosphorus hotel ones instead. We topped to 80% and headed another 50km down the road where we charged to 99% at LEDI in Brestovac. Kept it at 120 kph to Presevo peage. The peage was busy and although we were in the leftmost lane, there wasn't a lot of space to park, go ask the peage guy to open the barrier and let us across. So we joined the queue and asked when we got to the booth if we could loop around after we paid. He said no, it had to be done before we got to the booth. So be warned, if you're relying on Presevo on a southbound journey, park on the left by the plastic barrier and walk to the booth to ask. We were already running within range anyway so we pushed on and stuck to the speed limits from there on.

In Gevgelija, we already knew from Plughsare that the MakPetrol fast charger wasn't working, but we spent 15 minutes in Casino Flamingo Hotel trying to get the eLink charger working out of curiosity. The QR code is out of date and there is no longer an app.

Got to DEI Blue in Ikea with 14% remaining. Both borders had only taken 30 minutes each and temps today were 28-30C so conditions were good. The MY LR did 389km on 85% of battery at a mixture of 90 - 130 speeds. There were 2 moments of panic trying to start the DEI Blue charge for the first time with the App. Turned out that I had never confirmed my email when registering in the App a few weeks ago and my bank had blocked my credit card a few hours earlier thinking a charge at a Macedonian peage was fraudulent.

Chose to go with the 50kW DEI Bue chargers because we found them first and we only needed 25% to get to our ferry. By the time the meatballs were finished, we'd gotten leisurely to 44%, made the last ferry with 20 minutes to spare and got to our destination with 20% in the tank. So I don't have to trouble our host immediately for the granny charging he'd offered.

Fantastic news. Well done.

Didn't try Electoverse since we were only traveling to Halkidiki (northern Greece) and had confirmed destination charging where we were staying. So we only needed 1 charge in Thessaloniki and since we needed a food stop there also, Ikea was a good fit with 2 Dei Blue charger sites (multiple 50kW and 250kW)
In the towns, many Avin and Shell stations had an EV charge sign outside them and although slow, there's enough of them to prevent being stranded.
If heading south into Greece, you'd be back in the Tesla SuC coverage from Larissa or if going to Corfu, you'll be covered over that side from Q1 next year with the new SuC.

Have you tried actually using the Shell forecourt chargers in Greece ?

Did it work with the same Shell charger app as in the rest of Europe ?

The reason Iask is that the Shell branded forecourts in Greece are not actually owned by Shell at all. They are owned by Motor Oil (Hellas) Corinth Refineries A.E and the sale included a branding arrangement and SLA etc. This happened back in about 2010 from memory and so I am interested in how well the EV charger side of it has been integrated.

(not yet ... but one day .... Shell might be part of the Macedonia gap solution)

(the link below gives all of Europe and you can filter down to CCS etc)
