We need to fund a pipeline from east coast thru TX to the Salton Sea in CA. Since the source and destination elevation are not that much different, we can use the plasma drill to tunnel through the mountain and reduce need of pumps. Flood water should be piped into a pond/valley collection point along the pipeline and pumps activated as water level rises.

Precisely the plan. NASA aims to setup permanent bases on the moon's surface.

The Space Launch System rocket with an Orion capsule (capsule too uses solar panels for power) is scheduled to launch on August 29 for a test flight around the moon, no humans just yet. This will eventually lead to a subsequent mission to again land astronauts on the moon and later Mars.

Those bases will need energy, so yes the importance of solar panels can hardly be overstated.

Space based solar power is limited for a number of reasons. The biggest is up mass.

The largest solar arrays ever flown are on the ISS. Each set of two arrays came up as an integrated truss which contained all the equipment to deploy 2 sets of arrays, provide 2 axis pointing, battery storage, a radiator/cooling system, heaters, control systems and structural attach points. In direct sunlight at beginning of life they could each provide 31KW at the cost of ~ 36,000lbs.

Due to night passes, battery charging, power margins, etc each array was limited to supporting 12-15KW of continuous power. Now these arrays used really old cells. Newer cells are about 3 times more efficient so peak power with a brand new array today would be around 90KW with continuous power using newer Lithium Ion batteries above 50KW per array.

8 of these arrays like on the ISS would only get you to 720kw peak 400kw continuous. This is a lot of power for a space vehicle. It’s a lot for lunar use, but absolutely nothing for terrestrial power generation. It’ll also cost at least 300,000lbs of up mass

Quite frankly space based solar arrays indispensable but are also a huge pain.

Isn't it time to build that pipeline to take flood water from the Mississippi and TX to Lake Mead?

Besides distance, there’s also altitude between the two points to contend with.

I also suggested an alternative of using a plasma drill to go through the mountain and dump the flood water into the Salton Sea (it is below sea level). And in exchange, CA take less water from Lake Mead. Win-win. The states are desperate and money would be available to make this happen.

I am pretty sure AZ would love to take that flood water and dump it into their underground water bank. I am not too worried about Las Vegas as we have a straw below dead pool, so as 4% user of the Lower Basin, there's no way we would not get our allocation. AZ, on the other hand, do not have alternatives (desalinization) like CA.

Yeah, amazing there were no rolling black-outs with record heat set throughout our State and record peak demand in CA. In terms of historical precedent, CA's event was more rare than TX's.

Any loss of power in CA was relatively minimal and confined to typical local transformer failures at utility level. In that sense CA was much better "summer-ized" than TX was "winter-ized" so was able to access dispatchable power.

Would disagree with the latter half of the article's claim that "California's connection to other grids isn't helping much right now. It may not have helped Texas much, either, during the freeze." If TX was connected to the Western Interconnection, Southwest/CA would have sent substantial amounts to them during their power crisis.

It's true CA does not have unlimited import availability during peak demand during heat waves as neighboring States often have simultaneous high power demand. But current plans to build out transmission into Wyoming wind and hopefully some future connection beyond into Upper Midwest wind would completely change this.
