Climate Change / Global Warming Discussion

Rich individuals in all countries must pay more to tackle the climate crisis, whether through taxes or charges on consumption, one of the architects of the Paris agreement has said.

There is a growing consensus on the need for some kind of global wealth tax, with Brazil, which will host the Cop climate summit next year, an enthusiastic supporter.

Meanwhile, poor countries are struggling to raise the estimated $1tn (£785bn) a year of external finance needed to help them cut emissions and cope with the impacts of the climate crisis.

The richest 1% of people in the world are responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions than the 66% at the other end of the scale, yet they experience little of the vulnerability to climate shocks that are causing suffering and death, mainly among poorer people.

In a bold initiative aimed at combating global warming, Professor Yoram Rozen, head of the Asher Space Research Institute (ASRI) at the Technion and a professor in the Faculty of Physics and a team of academics and industry experts has formulated a daring plan to launch a massive foil sheet into space to act as a sunshade, deflecting a portion of the sun's rays and lowering the Earth's average temperature by 1.5 degrees Celsius within a relatively short span of 18 months.

This is GEOENGINEERING aimed to increase the ALBEDO (reflectivity) of the Earth. As we know GEOENGINEERING has big risks associated with it, inclusive with the fact that BIG OIL would better continue to sell fossil fuels because of the lowered Global Temperature Deviation.

Not a good idea IMO.

8% of the warming that we had in 2023 was caused by El Niño with 92% of last year’s surprising record-shattering heat caused by humans, according to this tweet by Jeff Berardelli.

If this is the case the 0,2°C Anomaly of the Global Temperature Deviation should stabilize in August--September when La Niña, cool flip-side of El Niño, will kick in.

But I have doubts about this matter and I will believe Jeff Berardelli only when the Anomaly of the Global Temperature Deviation will stabilize.

NOAA's GOES-West satellite captured ESA EarthCARE (Earth Clouds Aereosols and Radiation Explorer) Satellite, green dot in the reported video, leaving Earth.

The EarthCARE Satellite has the very important task to study the interactions between Clouds and Aereosols, which as Dr. James Hansen former NASA Scientist and Director of NASA GISS said are still not completely known, and their effects on the Climate Change issue.

GO BIG EarthCARE!

The world’s oceans are facing a “triple threat” of extreme heating, a loss of oxygen and acidification, with extreme conditions becoming far more intense in recent decades and placing enormous stress upon the planet’s panoply of marine life, new research has found.

About a fifth of the world’s ocean surface is particularly vulnerable to the three threats hitting at once, spurred by human activity such as the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation, the study found. In the top 300 meters of affected ocean, these compound events now last three times longer and are six times more intense than they were in the early 1960s, the research states.

The study’s lead author warned that the world’s oceans were already being pushed into an extreme new state because of the climate crisis. “The impacts of this have already been seen and felt,” said Joel Wong, a researcher at ETH Zurich, who cited the well-known example of the heat “blob” that has caused the die-off of marine life in the Pacific Ocean. “Intense extreme events like these are likely to happen again in the future and will disrupt marine ecosystems and fisheries around the world,” he added.

In a new satellite analysis, an international team of scientists found that methane emissions in the U.S. were higher in 2019 than previously estimated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), according to the NASA Earth Observatory

The results suggest potential underestimations in the EPA's inventory, especially for landfills and oil and gas operations. The results also highlight the importance of using satellite data and atmospheric models to enhance the precision of greenhouse gas estimates

I like this precision that NASA has to calculate GHGs emissions. This is the way to go to work out the Climate Change issue.

This is a job to be done for each Country all over the world IMO.

Fossil-fuel companies are the “godfathers of climate chaos” and should be banned in every country from advertising akin to restrictions on big tobacco, the secretary general of the United Nations has said while delivering dire new scientific warnings of global heating.

As I always said the situation of the Climate Change issue is so bad that the only Institution that can work out this matter is the UN.

We cannot think to work out the Climate Change issue with COP28 and COP29 taking place in Petrostates. As former Vice President and Nobel Laureate Al Gore said "We cannot afford to have Petrostates and Oil Companies to say us what is permissible. We are failing the job!"

Happy that the UN is intervening. IMO if when La Niña will kick in in August--September the 0.2°C Anomaly of the Global Temperature Deviation will not stabilize an unprecedented action NEEDS TO BE TAKEN AND COPs meeting have to take place at the UN Security Council starting with COP29.

GO BIG UN!

Around the world, from the surface waters to the seafloor, our oceans are warming, and we are beginning to adapt to and prepare for this change in our climate. Marine heatwaves occur when sea surface temperatures exceed 90% of typical regional temperatures, factoring in seasonal fluctuations. Scientists compare present conditions to a baseline average from 1991 to 2020, accounting for global warming trends. Marine heatwaves can endure for varying periods, from days to years, affecting not only surface waters but also the bottom of the ocean.

Extreme warm ocean temperatures can have profound effects on marine ecosystems, weather patterns, and economic activities. Marine heatwaves stress marine life, leading to mass die-offs of fish, marine mammals, and seabirds, and coral bleaching. They can also trigger harmful algal blooms and intensified hurricanes. The severity of these impacts varies by region and depends on factors such as the duration, timing, and depth of temperature anomalies.

May 2024 was the warmest May on record, marking the 12th consecutive month in which the global average temperature reached a record value for the corresponding month, according to data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S). The C3S data were cited by the UN Secretary General in a call for urgent action, as two new reports detailing aspects of climate change are published.

The Global Temperature Deviation for May 2024 was 1.52°C (not 1.51°C as it was said in a tweet that I posted some days ago), marking the 11th consecutive month (since July 2023) for which the Global Temperature Deviation reached or exceeded the threshold of 1.5°C set by the Agreement of Paris.

Reflecting the succession of record-breaking monthly temperatures, the 365-day Global Temperature Deviation for the last 12 months (June 2023 – May 2024) is the highest on record, at 1.63°C, according to the C3S data.

Shrink the Economy, Save the World? https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/08/...unlocked_article_code=1.yE0.6uui.qeAoRgFmhXrn

The eruption tapped into a suspicion supported by reality: Gains in economic growth have too often buoyed the fortunes of the richest instead of lifting all boats. Prosperity even in the most prosperous countries hasn’t been shared. But all the attention to inequality is just a crack in the edifice of economic orthodoxy. Now a much more radical proposition has emerged, looming like a wrecking ball: Is economic growth desirable at all?

In other words, we have plundered the planet instead of figuring out more egalitarian ways to live with one another. “The problem with growthism is that for decades it has distracted us from the difficult politics of redistribution,” Hickel writes.

Also for former Vice President and Nobel Laureate Al Gore NET ZERO is important to work out the Climate Change issue.

That's why I advice all TMC Members to read this book. You can find it on Amazon.

Wish a good NET ZERO LIFESTYLE to everybody.

We have other info about the Satellite Earth Observation from the ESA Earth Observation Department.

Using Satellite Data we can monitor Marine Heatwaves, Ocean Acidification (According to the chemical formula of the Ocean Acidification issue Carbonate Ions are subtracted which are useful for the coral reefs), sea level rise and ocean salinity (if the ocean salinity decreases too much the AMOC could collapse).
