Delivery of car that looks like it went through sandstorm

Looks like your car got dusty on the truck and then perhaps got rained on. Detailer probably washed down the outside of the car, but did not open the frunk to get inside.

Frunk is just a 5 minute wipe down, but the nooks and crannies probably will take more time.

Picking up a new car, especially a Tesla, is an exciting time. It shoud be sparkley clean and have that brand new look. Think this one fell through the cracks...really, it looks like it fell through a crack.

Thanks for all the comments and varying perspectives. Really torn about what to do tomorrow morning.

Just to be clear, the car WAS detailed for my delivery appointment. I watched them drive it out from the showroom along with several other cars for me & a few other owners. There were apparently 75-80 deliveries scheduled that day so they were doing them in shifts. The other cars I saw looked pristine.

Funny thing...when I mentioned the dirt on the car to the delivery specialist (who was very nice by the way), she said my car might have been one of the ones built in Las Vegas. I thought to myself “What the...”

That’s when I figured I better talk to the manager. In addition to apologizing for the condition of the car, he confirmed that yes, all cars are still being built in Fremont.

A sandstorm would leave pitting in whatever glass was facing forward. I'd reject the car if you see any evidence of that, glass or paint.

A dust storm would just make it dirty. If it looks good when you go back I'd have no problem accepting it at that point.

My car had traces of stubborn dust and dirt as well but nothing like this. It took a few weeks for the dusty smell to go away (might have also been various glues and such. But yeah. Unless that car looks spotless tomorrow I’d tell them to give you a new one. Unless maybe it is otherwise flawless. I’d ask them to change out the cabin filters too actually.

Animorph, thanks for the reply. What’s the best way to check for pitting? Just rubbing your hand or cloth across the glass/paint?

I'd rather accept that car the way it is and wash it myself. While it's nice to get a clean car during delivery and all that, the attention to detail isn't going to be there with some kid at the delivery center (or lot boy at the dealer, etc.) washing it.

Rejecting the car is idiocy if everything else is fine (panel gaps, no other glaring issues). Cars get dirty. Cars get washed. The road is full of dirt and grime that will be all over those crevices at some point. All cars come with some paint defects - most are introduced during the "detailing" process at the dealer or in this case, the Delivery Center. If you're concerned about perfect paint, take it to a qualified detailer for clay bar and paint correction.

Mine had some weird dust in the trunk crevices, likely from sitting outside somewhere during the delivery process as there was lots of crap in the air in NorCal due to fires. It got a wash a week later when the rest of the car caught up with the crevices.

I'm going to agree that if the car has no other issues than dirt, you could be opening up a can of worms with a replacement VIN which might have more serious issues (paint issues) then some simple dirt.

I doubt a delivery boy would do as good of a job as you would for your own car but definitely worth a shot to get them to detail it further.
