Did a wood dash trim delete today

I'm wondering if anyone has tried to stain the OEM veneer. My wife's Mercedes has some dark-grey stained wood trim that looks really good. I could see that working with the blacks and greys of the M3 interior. One concern would be how thin the veneer is and if it would hold up to (even mild) sanding...
