Faster A/C charging?

um, dc charging bypasses the obc so you can do that today.
Used obcs go for 1500+ and who wants to buy a $4000 charger just to charge your car at home?

Um... it's about reducing weight (improving efficiency) and lowering cost of the EV. Why buy DC charging for the home when you already paid for a rectifier in your EV? Better that the vehicle price drops by $3K PER VEHICLE then you get one DC charger for your garage. If you're such a fan of lugging around extra weight, might as well get a plug-in hybrid that has an engine and OBC.

Portable DC chargers would be something to consider when your OBC dies... I know of a few Leafs with dead OBC.

20kw dc or ac is not fast. I wouldn’t even consider 50kw fast.
I believe the point of the thread is "faster" charging, not 'fast' charging.
This is because, with trucks, charging on a typical 32 or even 48 amp charger will only charge a truck at about 13 or 20 mph, taking 26 or 17 hours (respectively) to fully charge its 200 KWh battery.
We're still talking about home, work, or destination charging. Not fast charging while on the road.
 
As EVs and DCFC become more prevalent, I wonder when Tesla would drop the OBC and offer home DC charger. A 10 kW DC Wall Charger would allow the Model 3 MFP to charge at 10 kW instead of 7.68 kW with a 32A EVSE and OBC.

You're definitely re-kindling the 1990's Ford v GM battle between On-board and Off-board charging.
Off-board charging adds weight and cost to the car but reduces the cost of the home/work/destination infrastructure.
If you assume most people are going to want to charge at home/work/destination anyway, then putting the cost in the car makes sense. If you assume they will be using DCFC most of the time, it may be worth removing the On-board charger and relying solely on Off-board charging either fast or with a home Off-board charger.

We want to encourage businesses to provide AC charging at work during peak solar so removing the ability to AC charge to save a few bucks isn't going to be good or EV or Solar adoption

If all a business or a mall has to do is install outlets in their parking lot to get a subsidy from the government or from power producers we can fix the duckbill issue that is plaguing the industry. EVs now charge where they are parked and no one plugs in when they get home as they can charge at work for close to free.

All good points, however, there are apparently large number of folks who opt out of paying to install an EVSE at home and, instead, spend their evenings (worst time from duck curve perspective) Supercharging while playing on social media on their phones. It will be interesting to see how the market plays it out.
 
My hope is the CT and the Roadster will have much higher chargers. No billionaire want to go to Superchargers. Neither billionaires nor truck owners want to wait 17 hours for a full charge on a 200 kWh battery.

Admittedly there are no signals from Tesla that my hope will come true.
"Billionaires" are not going to drive hundreds of miles in a day, return home, and then need to drive hundreds of miles again in a few hours. Also having huge demand swings like this is hard on the grid. There is a reason Tesl has been shrinking the OBC over the years. Just not needed unless you're running a limousine service.
 
No, you are wrong. Billionaires don't drive hundreds of miles. They take their girld friend an d then want to go out pasrtying..for a ride with lots of 2 second 0-60s, drive up to a remote cabin without electricity, or go track racing and drive home. They blow through 200 kwh.

And they certainly don't care about grid demand - that's for bureaucrats to worry about. Money buys priveleges.
