The Ottosteer for the Model 3 doesn’t work on the Y. I contacted them a couple weeks ago and they said they are still working on a Model Y specific version, but no ETA.

Same here (SnapPlate vs. Ottosteer), but more because I like the way the OEM mount looks. The SnapPlate creator mentioned in a different thread that they originally were planning on using the OEM mount but found that it scratches the paint as soon as any debris gets lodged behind it. So pros and cons with either approach.

Also, it looks like you need to put some force behind the SnapPlate to break it, so I’m less concerned about it snapping during normal use — and, also as the creator pointed out, breaking it is entirely intentional to prevent damaging the grill, which would be much more expensive to replace.
that's true. they both have pros and cons. however I was thinking if the front mount snaps, it's not just the frame you have to replace, but most likely the license plate too if it happens without you noticing.
which will add up to more than just the $15 haha

Has anyone in California purchased from this company before? If so, how do you like the product?

YES !

I actually put in an order and then told them to hold it. I have a dark silver car and decided to change by default California provided plate for the black legacy plate. Sent them a photo and was filled and to me in under two weeks.

HIGHLY recommend !

at the 5 min mark. i myself am deciding between the snap plate and the ottosteer magnetic plate mount.

love how the snap plate comes off in seconds, leaving nothing behind.

However after seeing how easily it can snap off, I'm leaning more towards the ottosteer magnetic mount

After I watched this video I understand now what is happening, they designed it so the weak point was at that center piece so that it wouldn't pull and break off any of the fines/vent pieces on the actual grille. They intentionally built in a break point which imo is very smart. Look from what I have seen its very sturdy as is, its not just going to fall apart on you if you bump it or drive fast etc.. you would have to exert some good force to pull and break it I think, but still less force they needed to break your grille.

Why are you removing it? Supposed to just put it and leave it.

In any case this is why I put paint protection film behind mine for easy removal if I want. Same with carpool stickers. There are companies that offer pre-cut pieces but you also buy a roll for less and do it yourself.

I have the ottasteer one on my 3. It holds on with a magnet and I commute 60 miles into Manhattan NYC. It doesn't fall off in case anyone is wondering. I don't bother to put the screws in.

I don't use the felt they provide. I took the 3m tape off my plate holder and use the soft grey dots out of this cabinet bumper pack. They are like a soft foam. Doesn't seem to leave a mark.

I will say these plate holders are way overpriced. I'm thinking of making my own on my 3d printer and posting it on thingiverse for free when I get time. They aren't anything amazing they clamp to the fins and just line up with the bumper.

All the people saying snap plate is designed to break. I would expect it to break alone the layering. I break 3d printed things all the time. That's prob not designed it's prob just how it came out.

I don't use the sticker so not sure why he was removing it. Maybe he was selling the car, or got new plates, or didn't like the look of a sticker on his bumper.

Catching up on this discussion about snapping a SnapPlate. The failure point is designed into the plate holder to protect your vehicle grille. It take a good amount of force to break it but something like a car wash would do it or someone backing into you. It's not going to just fall off while you're going down the road.
This video sums up this as well as customer experiences.

You're totally right that it breaks along the layers, but that was a conscious decision to print it in an orientation that the layers go where we wanted them. We actually have a version of the plate mount with reinforcement screws to put the layers there into compression which makes it quite strong. After testing it, though, we decided the risk to the grille just isn't worth it.

It truly isn't a good idea to hang a license plate off the front of a plastic grille that was never intended for that purpose, so for our personal vehicles, we're erring on the side of caution there. We've offered the reinforced plate mount to several customers whose broke in car washes, but they've all agreed they'd prefer it break away.

I got my SnapPlate this weekend for my Y. Works exactly as advertised and super easy to install, appreciate the included screw driver for the specialty plate mount screws. Looks good on the car too, nice and minimalist. Definitely a thumbs up from me.

Agreed it breaks and it's better that way. I actually didn't know you sold spare parts that's cool and might put you above the others.

Are you the guy in the video? I almost purchased a snap plate because your voice is so soothing.

Ha, yeah, I'm Matthew. Someone left a YouTube comment recently saying I'm the Bob Ross of Tesla videos.

I think it was a compliment. o_O

Hahaha! That's great. Your videos are great I've watched a bunch of them. I purchased the nikolapro kit because of your video..... I shall now order a snap plate when my girlfriend gets her 3. Thank you for the videos.

I have a slightly different issue... I got my Model Y mid April, and license plates a couple of weeks later. That's when I realized that 1) I didn't get any front plate holder with the car, and 2) the rear plate holder didn't have screws. I tried texting the delivery specialist, but never got a reply...

Was the car supposed to be delivered with a front plate holder and rear plate screws? I can't even find the information on the rear plate screw sizing anywhere... and I don't know how to contact customer service. Do I have to set up a service appointment to get screws for the rear plate? I could get the front plate holder based on the recommendations here, but what can I do with the rear plate?

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. My temporary license is expiring soon..

FWIW, the supplied double tape holder fits snug and clean looking on our M3; I’ll use it on the Y when it comes. Hard to see on the avatar, but a MagnaPlate was used on the MS, but they’re no longer in biz. It worked, and secured the plate to the nose with suction cups, which were effective about half the time. Is the SnapPlate as flimsy as it appears in the video?
