I've heard that installing these require a software tweak from Tesla (which they're probably loath to do without doing the part sale/installation themselves) **BUT** I've also heard that if you wait for the next software update the car will recode the updated door handle itself in the process.

Can anyone confirm?

That is correct, it requires a redeploy to work, and a sw update will fix it.

Tesla is installing these here for no labour cost, you only pay for parts. It's about 300€/handle.

The tech proudly reported "this one should hold a very long time" after door handle number six was replaced on the rear passenger side last month.

They don't use microswitches to sense when you press to manually extend the handle but the way the handle actually deforms the plastic to trigger the same thing is a tad unsettling. I think I prefer the previous microswitch version if the wire harnesses are routed properly and not tightly secured around corners. I guess this is what we're being offered now as a solution though so what I think really doesn't matter.

My Gen 3 handle failed in 14 months. Very disappointing.

I need to repair one of these on a late 2017. I have the handle out, but can’t figure out how to remove the Hall effect sensor so I can slide the pin over to replace the paddle. Anyone know?
