Germany's car industry can't build its own batteries

On a recent episode of 'Fully Charged' Robert mentions that there are currently 21 battery factories being built that each have similar capacity as the giga factory from Tesla. Pretty soon you will be able to get batteries from a variety of sources in large numbers.

Yes, there are a lot of giant battery factories being built.
The problem is that auto manufacturers will have to pay a premium for these batteries. The advantage Tesla has is that they own the factory and benefit from the lowest cost batteries.
It's interesting that auto manufacturers have long realized the value of owning the core technologies and manufacturing factories for ICE engines and transmissions but seem to have lost this knowledge by contracting out batteries to third parties. They will always be at a price disadvantage to Tesla with batteries and batteries make up the majority of the cost of an EV.
