I’m new to this and have been looking at getting a F9 mostly for the CarPlay integration. What are the pros/cons between F9 and the F88 v2? It seems like F88 would be better, since it is attached to the steering column and not the dash, making it significantly easier to reach and control while driving.
Interested in your opinions/input on this. Many thanks in advance!

For me i don't like the super skinny but longer horizontal display on the F88. Also the F88 steering wheel column version only comes with 1 UI which I am not a big fan of personally since I like like having the extra info like with the tire pressure and info layout on the screen. Also the concern of being able to touch the screen easier with the F88 since its a steering wheel column isn't a big concern because to be honest you shouldn't have to be needing to swipe the screen too much in the first place when the controls can be controlled using the right scroll wheel for both the F9 and F88 displays.

Also the steering wheel column displays will still block airflow somewhat even though you may not think it doesn't because the Tesla air vents are pretty low on the front dashboard so you can't make the display low enough so that the top of the F88 display doesn't block the air vents. I could be wrong but even if you lowered the steering column to the very lowest setting which again is not practical for most people of average height since it would hit their thighs/knees.

I personally like the F9 UI since it does have 3 UIs available and the front airvents help project the air with sacrificing airflow on the backside of the display. Both displays have AA/Carplay and front camera functionality and for the most part behave the same way so that is a tie there.

All are very helpful and valid points, thanks!
The only reason I would need to touch the screen while driving is because I have the Escort Max 4 radar detector and use it with the Drive Smart app, which allows me to lockout GPS radar locations, mute false alerts, etc.
I assume the screen angle is fixed and not able to be tilted up/down? Also, do the F9 scroll wheel controls override/replace the factory commands?
Does the CarPlay integration allow for output through the car’s speakers, like using factory-installed CarPlay does? Can I mirror the F9 screen to the main screen?
Ultimately, I’m trying to decide if a CarPlay streamer or the F9 is gonna be a better fit for my needs. However, I’ve read a lot of bad reviews about the streamers frequently dropping connection and generally being a PITA. Haha

So you are saying the main reason for needing the touch screen is to control the Drive Smart radar detector app? I honestly think having a magnetic phone holder on the side of your Tesla screen and use your cell phone as a better way to deal with controlling your Drive Smart app. It sounds like to me that you will primarily be using the display in AA/CP mode anyways and not the default UI screen. If that is the case then the F88 is fine since you don't plan to use the default UI screen primarily.

After the initial testing of AA/CP, I find it that I just prefer the stock UI info cluster information and will only use AA when going on a road trip so it doesn't really matter to me. I don't personally have CP since I have an Android phone but I don't think Carplay UI is meant to be an exact replica of your phone. At least with AA, I noticed that not all of my apps are available and I would assume CP would be the same on iOS and limit the available apps to relevant apps that would be suitable for driving use (ex: maps, music/podcast, phone, messages, etc) so I wouldn't even think your radar detector app would be on the list of apps that would be available to use in CP.

Not sure what you mean by reading bad reviews about dropping connection and being a PITA? Is this dropping connection related with BT when using AA/CP because I have not experienced any? Also have to keep in mind that some F9 reviews are released several months ago which there have been firmware updates to fix issues.

Wondering if anyone here can help…

How do you flash the img and can files in this f9y unit?

I tried many different sizes usb sticks (4/8/16) fat32 formatted. Files in the root, inside the update folder… all I get is “unvalid file” when I insert the usb…

Thanks!

Please see my post here. Best results is use a 4 GB FAT32 formatted with Allocation unit size is set to 4096 bytes (4 Kb).

What files are you using for the .img and CAN file? Have you tried contacting Hansshow for the latest .img and CAN files? Also I don't know if you can flash the .img and CAN file at the same time. I would try doing them separate.

I’ve noticed over the last couple of days that my range info still works fine and matches Tesla screen after the 20.1 update. It’s only the % SoC that is stuck at 76% for me. Not sure if the LFP battery on my RWD Model Y makes any difference compared to others who have the F9 Linux installed.
oh ok so you are saying the range counter still works but just the battery % SOC remains stuck after the 20.1 update. Are you saying the first few days after the 20.1 update the range counter was not syncing up? That would seem really odd that it would not work initially but then suddenly work. I don't think there is a difference for MY between RWD, LR AWD and Performance nor the battery type of the vehicle. The Tesla software functionality between any type of battery type for the vehicle is to pass the SOC and range info to the display.

Either way no matter how you slice and dice it, the F9 display does not display full functionality and there needs to be a CAN update to fix any inconsistencies.

I think the range counter was always syncing properly just that I hadn’t driven the car enough to confirm this right after updating to 20.1. However, I drove about 50 odd kms today and I’d also charged last night and the range counter was showing the correct range of 435 kms at 100% and was also counting down correctly as the battery drained. Agree, they still need to share an updated firmware (CAN I assume) to ensure the % SoC is in sync with Tesla and hope that’s soon!

Thanks! I formatted it again on a Windows machine and that did the trick (4096kb fat32).

Was able to flash both IMG and can files. Everything works besides car battery %. Thanks!

Do you mind sharing some pics of how this firmware looks like with the FY9 display like in drive and park mode? Are the screens and pulldown menus the exact same as on a F9 display? Just curious how it looks because I assume you are coming from the other type of UI in the screenshot you were showing above?

The reason I ask is because on the FY9 display, I was not a fan of the new UI and preferred the UI of the F9 display. Was just curious if you are able to install the F9 UI onto the FY9 display.

Hey! Sorry for the delay, was with the kids and didn't drive until now...

Please let me know if there's an specific part of the UI you'd like to see and I'll gladly get you a picture.

I own the F9 - Linux version. Yes, both are different products. The original (or old) UI of the FY9-C is the same as the current UI of F9 (or at least I believe so; that's why Hansshow told the YouTuber that it is compatible). If you buy the latest FY9-C, it comes with the new UI. I did install the latest Linux update for the F9, but "the problem with the update file provided by Hansshow is that it is not compatible with the new UI (there was a typo in my previous comment). When I install the update, it breaks, and many features get stuck between the old and new UI." I'll try to get some images of these and post it here later.
Exactly!!! I'm looking for the complete set of F9's old UI firmware and can't find it, or ways to reset it to the factory version.
Were you able to get an update on this on getting the F9 old UI firmware files from anywhere? Maybe TesStudio has the full F9 UI firmware files?

Can you describe what issues you get when you mix UIs between the F9 old UI and F9 new UI?

Can you please post your software versions? I received an update today but range is still broken.
