Wearing the belt is a no-brainer.
However, safety belts always have some slack. They must give a bit, or deceleration would be too great for the upper body and head to survive without injury. As a result, passengers' upper bodies move forward, and the heads even more. There are many factors that determine how much the body and head can move forward - height, weight, proper belt usage, and even thick clothing has a major effect.
Last thing you want in front of you is a hard metal object with sharp edges. Not something I'd encourage you to try.
Once your face is cut-up, you'd stop LOLing pretty quickly.
