Is 8-12 Week Delivery Estimate accurate these days?

This site may earn commission on affiliate links.
Just a quick note for anyone who has placed an order in say the last 3 weeks;
Tesla's website is reporting an uniform 8-12 week delivery estimate for all configs of M3s;
Has anyone else ordered recently, gotten a similarly long estimate but taken delivery more quickly?

Just wanted to get a sense if 8-12 weeks really is legit

John
This is my second Tesla.

I test drive the car, I was told 4-8 weeks for delivery since none were in stock so I ordered the car since I had to turn in another car. Within days I was told the Rancho dealer Found one so I would not have to wait. I purchased it during Covid and acceptable a delivery. I inquired about a charging cable and was not even offered that.

1 month after I receive the car there is a 2,000 discount, 1 year of super charging, charging pad included and upgraded USB ports.

If I had waited the 4-8 weeks to order I would have received the upgraded vehicle and all discounts and perks but me asking for charging cables at the time we're too much.

This is a bait and switch, I'm a manufacturer and I understand taking care of the customer

So basically I was told 8 weeks about and got it in 1 but no mention about any changes or discounts coming in a month, I'm not happy. Plus the car had a dent in the dash and a light had to be replaced and came with 100 miles since that was my only choice. I purchased in May.

My advice for computers (I used to be in the business) seems to me to apply to cars as well. Don't buy or upgrade until you can't wait even one day longer; if you can wait another day, then wait.

That way, if there's a price reduction or a new model, or an upgrade to an existing model the next day, you can console yourself with the knowledge that you couldn't wait that extra day. And if you could have waited, then whose responsible for you not waiting?

When I originally paid my $100, I told them to submit the order for production in the beginning of January of next year. A week ago today, I asked them to submit it now. Maybe I should have waited for Battery Day, but I decided not to. So if Musk announces an improved M3 on Battery Day, I'l have had my car for about a month (assuming that the delivery window holds true), and won't cry about it. Well, not much.

But THEY told me the wait was 8 weeks after talking to them for 2 days, then I test drove and he said you need to order it, 8 weeks, after I put the deposit down ( I went back to check actual events) they found one that very night 60 miles away after saying none were in stock in red with 19" AWD before. I wasn't prepared with financing either and had another car I had to turn in the following month. Sure I could have said I don't want it I'll wait but there was no reason not to take, but I hadn't intended to put the deposit down for another month and only did that day because of the wait.

If I had waited 20 days to do the deposit I was pushed in to...

$2K
Charging Pad (kind of useless anyway)
1 year free supercharging
USB-C which probably doesn't matter

I could use the super charging or the money
They wouldn't even throw in a charging cable for the phone which used to be included.
Just seems like a bait and switch.

With computers and iPhones you pretty much know when something is coming but this was an incentive COVID program an it had to be delivered to me because of that.

My warning to new car people, spend 2K and get the front done with clear bra wrap, the paint is really terrible. The clear bra also looks much better than the topcoat

If I find an inventory model that I would like to have, can I have my reservation switched to it instead of my build order? There was one one available earlier today that, except for the color, was the same as what I have on order. If I had acted before it was sold, could I have switched?

Yes. Beginning of quarter builds are for Europe and Asian markets (besides China). The last month of the quarter builds are usually the fastest for NA. Now that June has past, you will probably get your car in end of August, beginning of Sept. If you order in June, you might have even gotten it in a week.
Yes, I ordered a AWD M3 in the middle of June and was surprised to get it in about three days.

Got a response by email yesterday from an Delivery Specialist. She said that it could go up to end of September but could be earlier in August. I don't see a lot of changes in the Google Spreadsheet even for European cars. Does someone know if the factory is close:
Tesla is planning Fremont factory shutdown for upgrades, opening new assembly line - Electrek

I honestly don’t think the delivery specialist know anything more than we do until the car arrives or is in route to their location. She basically told you exactly what the website says, 4-8 weeks. I’m curious if the factory is closed too ..

You'd think somebody that works on the line would get some information out to family or friends and eventually make it to the forum. I guess wishful thinking.

Agreed. Had the same experience.

FYI I've been told a couple times by my SA that the payment info doesn't need to be entered to move the process forward. The point is you shouldn't have your loan finalized very early since approvals may only last 30 or 60 days. SA has told me to wait on even applying for the loan until I have visibility on delivery date.

I’m two weeks from running into that issue. The smart thing would have been to wait as you mentioned.

I ordered mine right at the end of June, so after the discount (what got me to pull the trigger) and a week before the July increase on the FSD of $1000). With those two things I decided now or never. I guess it makes sense. If you order in June they aren't bumping up the new price for FSD at delivery, and if the price drops, you still have the option of losing the $100 and cancelling your order and re-ordering and waiting another month (I think the hold on getting the same trim for a year or whatever only applies to if you accept delivery and return it in the first week).

That said... next week will be week 6 since ordering and no call to pick up so I am seeming to be on schedule. Which is good. Allowed me to sell my pickup and camper, set up my garage for charging, get some all weather floor mats and mudflaps ordered and delivered, now just saving a bit and having 1 vehicle for me and my wife.

I've got to say the "I wish I waited for X" is pretty common though. Battery day might have another one of those... But in the end I am getting what I wanted for the price I was willing to pay. I remember buying a car and a few months later the new model came out and had some added tech (adaptive cruise), or with my jeep and the next year bluetooth connectivity was added to the base stereo. Or buying my phone a month before they had a sale on it. No fun when the timing doesn't work out though.

At least with over the air updates, the car isn't missing out on a lot of the things you would see coming out the following year.
