Carpools are being replaced with Highways of the Rich and Famous in our area. We lost our HOV lane and now have a $1 per mile toll road in it's place.
Eventually, any operational cost advantage of EVs over ICE vehicles will be insignificant as toll fees exceed your car payment.
People from the Gore Groupies like Jerry Brown, believe only the rich should drive. The poor should walk and be on welfare. Desk jobs are the only jobs needed (they don't actually know anybody with dirt under their nails) because their socialist Professors (who are union) told them so.
The wealthy liberals have no foundation to draw upon to have compassion for the proletariat. They do not have bad intentions, they just don't know how most people live. And they sort of don't care. Because no matter what a proletariat thinks their needs are, a wealthy liberal believes the proletariat does not know what their needs actually are. How could they? Their families didn't send them to isolated ivy league schools, so the proletariat could not gain the wisdom of the Professors who by the way, seldom have experience in non-institutional occupations.
There are very few wealthy liberals who are actually liberal. They tend more toward totalitarianism, not for individual freedom of the masses. Only the elite should have actual freedom, because they are the only ones wise enough to use it correctly.
Until they get indicted and go to prison for corruption. This is because when you start making laws that exempt yourself from their effect, you tend to ignore inconvenient laws all together.
And that is the real inconvenient truth. It's the core of the hypocrisy of Gore and other rich liberals today. Laws are only for proletariats who need the guidance from the rich to exist. Because money to them is a sign of intelligence, not greed, even if it's inherited or married into.

Per wiki they started during the 1940s due to rationing during WWII, then came back during the 70s due to the oil embargo; so nothing to do with the environment. I'm sure el-crucero will disagree with this as well
OK I could see it for rationing during WWII. So 2 cars on the highway in 1944 rather than the usual 3
