, the motors are binned. Similar to what AMD/Intel does with CPUs. Many models are the same exact chip, just binned to a higher quality tier allowing them to sell it as a higher spec model with more compute performance.

The fact there's only a single part # suggests they found there's not enough difference from one motor to another actually make any difference.

When a service center orders a replacement P drive unit and a replacement AWD drive unit, it's the exact same part # he's ordering.
 
you can change what you want - but you can't expect Tesla to support it in any way so is a massive risk.
Thats fine for a toy/track car, but not for anything else.
If you go hacking the software, then Tesla sends an update that breaks your hack, that's on you to fix, not Tesla.
Same if you're adding different modules etc. Tesla will be updating the software expecting their stuff so will not be testing for anything that isn't.
Its probably fine for traditional car companies who still build a car from parts bins, but Tesla are an integrated computer system on wheels.
Mess with it at your risk and don't expect to get working updates.
