Love the car, but the pick up experience is...

So I picked up my SR+ today at the Vancouver location. The car is great, but the pickup experience is the worse experience I have ever encountered.

1) Pick up scheduled at 5:30pm at the West 4th showroom location, arrived on time, and the car did not arrive until 7pm.
2) Was asked to go down to the underground parkade to go through the orientation. I was led to the corner of the parkade in which the light on top was burned and not working. I asked the specialist to move the car to a brighter location, he replied "why?" …??? why? because I can't see anything LOL
3) The specialist proceed to ask me, "So, do you know anything about Model 3? if you do, then we don't have to go through this." by this time, I was a bit shocked about the experiences I received. I proceed to ask the specialist to go through their normal procedure.
4) 10-15 min into the orientation, and we are done. He went through the following: seat/mirror/steering wheel adjustment, how to open and close the door, wiper control, and the different modes for driving. Nothing else. Oh, he put on the license plate for me.
5) I noticed that the charging kit was missing a nema 14-50 adaptor so I ask the specialist about this, he couldn't give me an answer so he ask the manager to talk to me. The manager told me that Tesla stop providing the nema 14-50 adaptor at the beginning of this month, I wasn't aware of this news, as I was in the show room in April and was told that the package would include the adaptor. I placed the order on May 7th and no one mentioned this update to me. I told the manager that it would be crazy if I take the delivery without an adaptor because I drive in average 150km/day for work and I politely ask the manager to see is there anyway I can buy one to use. He said no you have to order online and have it ship to your house. I then proceed to ask him if I can delay the pick up until the adaptor arrives. He said no, he will have to revert my contract. So I rephrase the question and asked "Are you telling me that you are going to revert my contract because of an adaptor?" he replied "Yes" … at this moment I am literally running out of words to say.

I end up taking the car, and spend a good 20min in the parkade trying to figure out things myself, such as paring my phone, going through different options on the screen, using the navigation, and voice control. In which no one from Tesla came to see if I need any other assistance.

When I got home, I went on the Tesla website and found out the nema 14-50 adaptor is on back order LOL.

So now, I am stuck with an awesome car that I can drive for couple days, and then I will have to leave the car at home to charge for 30+ hours before I can use it again, until the adaptor is back in stock to order.

So fellow owners, is there another place that I can buy an adaptor? or is anyone willing to sell me their adaptor if you have an extra one?

Thanks in advance.

The delivery centre have them. At least when I was there. I talked with at least 3 sales guys about buying a NEMA 14-50 adapter. All the answer is no we don’t have it here, you need to go online order them. Then I went straight to the service centre ask if they have any. The girl said yes have them in stock. So I grabbed one. Call in first thing tmr morning ask if they still have them.

Worst case if you can't charge at public stations, there is a supercharger in Surrey. Would cost a bit more, but should tie you over until the part is available. Also use level 1 charging, even though won't be enough, at least it's something.

I was planning to bring a friend with me when I pick up my Model 3, hopefully next week so that I could have two sets of eyes for the ore-delivery inspection. He has friends who recently received a Niro EV and they are all raving about it.

Given the gong show that the Vancouver delivery centre has become, I have mixed views. Bring a friend because inspection is likely to be difficult? Not bring someone because their first experience with Tesla is likely to be horrendous?

The delivery date on my page is June 14 and I still haven’t heard a thing from Tesla.

He’s after the 14-50 isn’t he? Not the J1772 for the L2 chargers.

Interesting perspective of the delivery experience. When we bought our 2015 P85D almost 4 years ago (before the Model 3 delivery onslaught) the instructions on my Tesla portal clearly indicated to read the operating instructions (a.k.a. "RTFM") which was online to make our delivery experience more productive and faster. Nobody held our hand showing us the 100+ features of our new Tesla... which cost twice as much as any Model 3.

Our son and his wife took delivery of a 2019 Model 3 LR DM 2 months ago and read the operating instructions before they arrived for their delivery... and spent their short delivery time asking for clarifications of things the online manual didn't cover or make clear. This was done out of courtesy both to the Tesla Delivery Specialists who are SLAMMED with deliveries... AND the onslaught of other new Tesla owners like you taking deliveries.

Did your completely read and study your Model 3 operation instructions before you took delivery? And arrive 99% educated with just questions to clarify what you read? Or was your expectation that a Tesla Delivery Specialist was supposed to take as much time as you wanted to demonstrate the 100+ features of the car to you instead?

I think every Tesla owner needs to help Tesla out during this automotive REVOLUTION. Help out instead of complain about your perceived entitlement failure. PAY IT FORWARD

Just wanna confirm because I'm still new at this. Nema 14-50 is only for home charging right? The J1772 is for level 2 public charger and IS included with the car? Thanks in advance

The 14-50 is not only for home; could also be used at an RV park, for example. But practically, yes--the J1772 is the important one for L2 public stations and should still be included with the car.

I picked up my car in Sep last year and it's always been like that. I think what was surprising was them not including the 14-50 adapter. Two of my friends who picked up their LR DM and P3D+ early May received it.

No I expect to pick up the car at a well lighted place so I can fully inspect the car instead at an underground parkade with burnt out lights and being ask why do I need to see the car under a better lighting area during the orientation.

I expect a better communication between the sales team and the pick up specialist during the transition time when half of the ppl still getting the nema 1450 adaptor and the other half are not.

I expect some sort of resolution when I have legitimate issue with trying to figure out what can I do with regarding my own charging situation instead of threats me with reverting my contract.

I expect the basic walk through of certain features not all the features.

I have being around cars long enough to figure out things myself but spending 60k on a car and not receiving the minimum service is pretty unexceptable.

U just don't get the 1450 adaptor if you place your order after may 1st.

So it is quite stupid. If you place the order on April 30 and you somehow had a pick up date 2month later, you will be in title to the 1450 adaptor. If you place your order on May 1st and schedule to pick up the car in two weeks, you are out of luck.

Quick update

I am currently at the service centre and they don't have it anymore.

The 14-50 adapter goes on the wall-end of the mobile charger (cord). (The "universal" in Universal Mobile Charger means that you can plug it in to about any kind of wall socket with the right adapter.) You will use it mostly at home, though there are sockets around. Sockets don't even have to be intended for car charging.
The J1772 goes on the car-end of the cord when you are using somebody else's non-Tesla-specific charging equipment (J1772).

My understanding is that the J1772 is still standard, but the 14-50 adapter is no longer included.

That’s a real shame

The Vancouver Tesla team usually bend over backwards to ensure you’re satisfied - this may be a one off, and you should probably have brought it up with them before posting on here

Notwithstanding, the B.C. EV community is here to help - if you are unsure of any vehicle functions, any one of us would gladly offer advice, and may even have a spare adapter to loan you

Remember, we all have bad days - don’t ‘angry post’ just because you encountered someone who was having one. One day, it could be you on the other end of it......

Happy driving in your amazing new car!

Tesla announced the "NEMA 14-50 adapter" (actually a Tesla Mobile Connector Mobile Connector) would no longer be included before you took delivery. Since you stated charging was critical, seems obvious you should have picked up a Tesla Mobile Connector before you took delivery from your Tesla Service Center. Then if a Tesla Mobile Connector came with your Tesla you could have just returned it. I went one step further and had our Tesla High Power Wall Connector installed at our home on a 100A 240V breaker before I took delivery of our 2015 P85D ~ 4 years ago. Not having your "fuel" source in place for your $60k car seems irresponsible. Would you buy a car needing hydrogen and then blame the car dealer / manufacturer if there's no hydrogen refueling station nearby?

Isn't the simple resolution to buy a Tesla Mobile Connector or Tesla Wall Connector? In March, I found a brand new SignatureTesla Wall Connector for our son's Model 3 on Craigslist for $375, had the electrical permit pulled and the electrical contractor lined up.. ALL before they took delivery of their Model 3 LR... in fact even before they closed on their house.

Great planning = Great implementation
