What is different with the new Drive unit?Just a quick advice for anyone receiving a Model 3 in Q3/2021. The new Drive Unit Cat 2 can be identified via the 8th digit of your VIN:
SR+ = J
LR = K
P = L
Any other letter is Drive Unit Cat 1.

And not terrible German for being in the south. I learned my German in the Black Forest region and many northern Germans prefer to speak English or French down south just because they have such a hard time with the southern dialect.Can you click the CC button and use subtitles?
( I assume you know he is speaking German... )
The rear motor has been modified. It's stator is not built with fractional slot windings anymore but hairpin windings.What is different with the new Drive unit?
Thanks for the info. I have a M3P on order and still waiting on a vin so assuming I will probably be getting this new design.The rear motor has been modified. It's stator is not built with fractional slot windings anymore but hairpin windings.
Motorcodes are changed:
Performance Motor was 3D1 and is now 3D6.
Base Motor was 3D5 and is now 3D7.
According to the spec sheet all power parameters are identical.
The first customers will receive these new motors in the coming weeks. We will see about noticeable differences in real life (or none) soon thereafter.
Would be great to get feedback if these new motors are also used in US cars. Q3 deliveries from China to the EU all have the new motors apart for some SR+ with high VIN numbers above 300 (reason unknown).Thanks for the info. I will post here as soon as my Vin is assigned and let you know.Would be great to get feedback if these new motors are also used in US cars. Q3 deliveries from China to the EU all have the new motors apart for some SR+ with VIN high numbers above 300 (reason unknown).
Again: easily noticed once a VIN has been assigned.
I think the new design is only for motors made in China. (Though engineers did say the changes would eventually come to US produced motors.Thanks for the info. I have a M3P on order and still waiting on a vin so assuming I will probably be getting this new design.
My best guess was "High Voltage" Charger. So the unit that handles DC charging up to 400V x 625A = 250KW. Up to 650A actually.@eivissa What is this HV charger? So what this HV means?
Is there any word of the new motor coming to the US?@eivissa
FYI: I'm in NY and ordered a Model 3 Performance on 7/9 and received the VIN today.
VIN 5YJ3E1EC4MFXXXXXX
I'm guessing holding out for the new motors would be silly, no?
Best,
Gene
None that I'm aware of but most of my knowledge comes from this forum. There was a rumor a few weeks ago that P3s were going to see a ~60kW increase and that it was reported from an owner in China. It was a rumor by a Twitter user and so far I've seen no corroborating evidence or repeat of the rumor.Is there any word of the new motor coming to the US?
Tesla engineers have said that GigaNevada would switch motor production to the hairpin design, like China is creating, eventually. But I think they said it was more than a year out. (They may do that once the drive unit manufacturing in GigaTexas is up and running so they can make the switch without causing a parts shortage.)Is there any word of the new motor coming to the US?
The back of the hood pops up in a pedestrian collision to help reduce the injuries. I think the EU safety requirements require such, and we don't get them here in the US.What are the differences between the old/new frunk hinges in the post shown above?
This is how it technically works, but we don't know if this is only preparation for the full system yet.What are the differences between the old/new frunk hinges in the post shown above?
