Model X Delivery Nightmares Orlando

We ordered a custom MODEL X and had it delivered in Orlando this week. Car looked beautiful from a distance but a quick inspection revealed several HUGE problems.

MOST SERIOUS: The steering wheel vibrates excessively when changing lanes, both to right and left. Needs to be serviced immediately.

1. Electric wiring exposed to dirt and debris on passenger side, rear wheel.
2. Electric wiring exposed to dirt and debris from passenger side, front wheel.
3. Electronic/electric components exposed to dirt and debris from passenger/driver side, front wheels.
4. Gap between panels of rear underside cover (Bad engineering?).
5. Interior ceiling cover detached, where the windshield ends. Flimsy velcro strips can’t hold it in place.
6. Carpet covers loose/detached in rear trunk floor.
7. Dirt/grime under trunk carpet. Boot marks all over.
8. Scratches around trunk/trunk door plastic casing.
9. Loose plastic and styrofoam parts inside the trunk (under carpet). These should be attached.
10. Trunk door rubber stops without finish.
11. Dirt/grime between driver seat and center console.
12. Dirt/grime in the underside of both middle seats.
13. A large, loose bolt in the front trunk (?).
14. Flimsy, plastic ball joints in suspension right next to front wheels, will break off at the contact with any minor road debris.
15. Back seats pinch wiring when upright.
16. Used/old, worn out part used on driver door.
17. Bad paint job done on front hood.
18. Scratches all over plastic parts in interior.
19. One Key all scratched.
20. Under side completely dirty with mud.
21. Glue residue in windows.
22. Car looked like it had been driven through a dirt road, full of small pebbles in tires.

The above, along with all the other problems we encountered during the walk-thru, seems to indicate that this car has been built with RECYCLED parts. I find it hard to believe that a BRAND NEW, $100,000 car would have so much dirt all over, so much scuffing on plastic finishes, excessive vibration on steering wheel. If it wasn’t recycled, then there’s something terribly wrong with your manufacturing process!

I have forwarded this to Elon Musk. Their delivery, manufacture system is broken.

I might kick myself for responding to this new "thread", but here goes...

None of the items you mentioned sound like a "huge" issue. The vibration is likely because you have "Lane Assist" turned on, and it will vibrate the steering wheel when you cross the dashed line. If you don't like it, you can turn it off in the settings. That "loose bolt" is likely the tow hook, only used if you need to tow your vehicle. Is this your first car purchase?

However, very few here at TMC are going to take this post seriously. You really should search this forum for the issues you are concerned about and learn about your vehicle. Or take this stuff up with your delivery specialist. Most of this stuff can be cleaned up in 5 minutes (personally I would just have done it myself). The rest of it can be handled by the delivery specialist.

This is a different type of car and you're working with a different type of car company. If you have jumped into this purchase without this knowledge, you might want to consider having Tesla buy-back your vehicle. You don't sound ready to own a Tesla.

Best of luck with whatever you choose.

That large loose bolt in the Frunk is probably your tow eye...

My wife’s Audi S5 Cabriolet had worse paint than my new Tesla did - took delivery of both within a week.

I understand your concerns and empathize, but I think a good chunk of your “complaints” (i.e. Flimsy plastic ball joints) etc are things you can have seen when you first looked at an X - they should all be the same - and some of this concern is probably due to angst over the many posts in the forums about problems at deliveries.

Reality is the overwhelming majority of X’s are delivered with few, if any problems. I had a few with each of my 2 X’s I took delivery of in December and March, but nothing major. Actually had the same number of problems my wife’s Audi had. Perhaps all of the stories on the forum have made you hyper-sensitive.

There is no excuse for some of those to have not been caught during the pre-delivery checklist. Others, I think are hyper-sensitivity while others are very legitimate - which Tesla will fix.

When I picked up my new X a week ago yesterday, I simply decided to leave it with the SC to fix the minor problems. I am sure you had emailed your DS asking when you could pick it up and were anxious to get it - as they were anxious to get it to you. That does not excuse the legitimate problems, and the paint job is a legitimate reason to refuse delivery (if you did - see the BMW vs Alabama case on paint issues with new cars).

That being said, you obviously accepted delivery and are still learning about your vehicle (i.e. tow hook/lane departure warning, etc) and I think the real issue may lie with the DS and their team for not properly preparing your vehicle and catching some of the parts that may have been damaged anywhere from the factory to delivery. Your concerns about how wires are run or flimsy ball joints, frankly, may be more on you than Tesla as, if all X’s are built similarly (I cannot look at mine right now as it is being wrapped) then those are things you should have identified before ordering.

I hope things get resolved for you and you enjoy your Tesla as much as I have enjoyed mine. I suspect that if you go to Porsche/Audi/GM forums you will see a lot of complaints about delivery quality too. But as an early adopter of a new technology from a new car company, a little patience can go a long way to allowing you to truly enjoy what I believe are the best driving vehicles on the road today.

Good luck!

I’ll tell you what I’m not ready to do: pay $100,000 for a car that’s delivered all filthy and scratched. TESLA will get nothing but hell from me until all used and worn parts are replaced in this “brand new” car.
When you pay a lot of money for a car, it usually means you're getting a low-volume, boutique car. They tend to be high maintenance vehicles. You'll pay 2-10 times more for a Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren, etc. and they'll have lots more compared to a high-volume Honda Civic.

You need 3 things in order to be a satisfied Tesla owner:
(a) patience
(b) understanding
(c) flexibility

If you don't have all 3, you will not likely be a satisfied owner and it might be best to wait at least 2 more years before looking at a Tesla Model-X. Never buy the first model year of any vehicle/brand if you want to avoid frustrations.

2 years ago you would have been dealing with real issues like ghosting windshields, panel misalignments, rear falcon door sensors not working, crossed A/C lines, etc. The vehicle's hardware is constantly being improved, along with the on-board software via Over-The-Air updates. Lots of the existing software is still in beta, including Auto-Pilot, rain-sensing wipers, (soon-to-be) navigation, etc.

A lot of people in this community use this forum to research issues and find solutions. There are some that come here to complain, but that's not a productive use of this forum.

OP: I would NEVER accept that filthy vehicle either. Good for you to raise hell! Someone mentioned one would need "patience", "understanding", and "flexibility" when buying a Tesla? Wow, Tesla wants to compete in the luxury market, and this scratched-up car is how they do it? I saw "Ferrari, Lambo, McLaren" mentioned by the above poster also. There's NO WAY Tesla quality can be compared to those, just can't. Those exotics are not gonna be presented to buyers with that many scratches, dirt, and grime all over. I agree with those who said the vibration is most likely due to lane departure warning, very common feature nowadays.

Most here are Musk suckers, not me.

Steering wheel vibrates when going straight as well, the problem is intermittent. As far as the other junk about the car (using used parts on a brand new vehicle!), some of you need to up your standards.

Tesla is in deep *^%# because they think buyers will simply suck it up. Stock has gone down 22% this week alone more pain to come.

They need to get their act together or be swallowed up by the competition. Delivering a car as if their employees took it on a hunting expedition with hookers will go a long way to prop up confidence in their sinking brand.

I will probably cancel my MODEL 3 reservation after this terrible delivery experience.

If you were so angry why did you accept delivery?
