My roadster's first car show. Lots of Love plus some animosity from a few.

I took my newly purchased roaster to it's first car show this morning. Got lots of love plus some unexpected animosity from a few. It is a monthly show, called Coffee and Cars, just a couple miles from my residence. Probably more than 250 exotic plus many older restored cars showed up for the event. Needless to say, there was a lot of nice hardware there. A few things I learned. Many of the attendees were aware that some type of Tesla is scheduled to be launched into deep space. They did not know that it was the roadster that will be making the trip. Others thought that they were viewing a brand spanking new model just released by Tesla. When I told them they were viewing a 10 year old car they were very surprised. On the downside, some of the owners from the Ferrari group came over and were criticizing the whole concept of electric sports cars. Quite frankly, the tone of their voices was quite nasty. When I spoke of the 2020 Tesla roadster with a zero to 60 mph speed of 1.9 seconds, one of the guys face turned red and I though he was going to have a stroke on the spot. He replied that Tesla was just a tree hugging fad and walked away. Personally, I think many of these guys feel threatened by Tesla and the future of EV's. With that said, the other 90 percent of attendees I talked were very impressed with the roadster and really loved the styling. Just wanted to share with others here.

Hahaha. Because Ferraris are so mainstream.

But congrats on surviving your first car show. It's a lot of fun. One tip to keep people from deciding to get in your car (though their prob better behaved at a Cars & Coffee) ... fill the inside with balloons. It's colorful, and it keeps people from getting in. (I started doing this at a Girl Scout expo where everyone was coming by with ice cream cones, freshly painted nails from a booth nearby, and sugary treats stuck to their hands. It worked.)

I would get red faced too if I spent $750,000 on my car and I got smoked by a $120K ten year old car. Wait until the Next Gen Roadster comes out, the Ferrari cry babies will need a Costco sized pallet of Kleenex tissues to manage their frustration and anger.

Yes...the show is sponsored by the Peninsula Seniors Group but there were many young attendees. The young people seemed to be better versed about the whole Tesla story and think of Elon Musk as a rock star. You can't blame them as they are looking towards their future.

I agree, don't go to the shows were most dudes are wearing Depend undergarments or look like a collection of old, fat gray Teletubbies.

Most of the "Fast and Furious" crowd have been smoked by a Tesla on the street and respect the car. They other guys are pissed they dropped so much coin into their car and a glorified golf cart smokes their pride and joy.

Glad the younger generation gets it, and frankly that's all that matters!

I took my newly purchased roaster to it's first car show this morning. Got lots of love plus some unexpected animosity from a few. It is a monthly show, called Coffee and Cars, just a couple miles from my residence. Probably more than 250 exotic plus many older restored cars showed up for the event. Needless to say, there was a lot of nice hardware there. A few things I learned. Many of the attendees were aware that some type of Tesla is scheduled to be launched into deep space. They did not know that it was the roadster that will be making the trip. Others thought that they were viewing a brand spanking new model just released by Tesla. When I told them they were viewing a 10 year old car they were very surprised. On the downside, some of the owners from the Ferrari group came over and were criticizing the whole concept of electric sports cars. Quite frankly, the tone of their voices was quite nasty. When I spoke of the 2020 Tesla roadster with a zero to 60 mph speed of 1.9 seconds, one of the guys face turned red and I though he was going to have a stroke on the spot. He replied that Tesla was just a tree hugging fad and walked away. Personally, I think many of these guys feel threatened by Tesla and the future of EV's. With that said, the other 90 percent of attendees I talked were very impressed with the roadster and really loved the styling. Just wanted to share with others here.

Excellent report! Sounds as if you had a (mostly)_ enjoyable time.
I have been to a couple of "Cars & Coffee" events sponsored by car dealers, as well as to a couple of other car shows. For the most part, I have had very positive reception. People either ignore the Teslas if they have no interest, or have a look or a chat if they are interested. So I encourage you and others to attend more if you enjoy them. And there is nothing wrong with having a look at the other cars and maybe even making some admiring comments -- people are proud of their cars and many of them are actually impressive pieces of engineering. i especially like seeing older cars that have been restored or lovingly cared for.
When I have attended shows, there is usually at least one other Tesla owner, so we take turns getting coffee or looking at the other cars, while the other guy watches over the cars.
And my attitude is to allow folks to sit in my car. People enjoy it (especially kids), and nothing terrible has happened yet.

One tip, though: If you allow people to sit in the car, plug in your charging cable. That serves two purposes: It attracts attention to the electric aspect of the car, and it prevents anyone from accidentally putting the car into gear and causing an unfortunate accident if the car should move. (This was a suggestion from another Tesla owner who attended these types of events.)

Haha, indeed, there are few things as brittle as the ego of a Ferrari owner. BMW and Porsche owners aren't far behind. Now, these are all fine cars (I've owned some myself) but most of the new sales of these marks are to people who aren't really automotive enthusiasts but rather "brand snobs" who primarily want a status symbol and whose knowledge of cars is limited to what a salesman told them. A lot of BMW owners really think they are driving "The Ultimate Driving Machine" and most new Porsche drivers have no idea that my Toyota* might embarrass them on Pacific Coast Highway.

In the 1990s, my local Ferrari owner's club banned other brands at their autocross events when the Acura NSX's started showing up and beating the Ferraris that cost several times as much.

That is a very strange list... how is a 2013 VW Beetle (manual transmission nonetheless) or a 2003 Cadillac Escalade faster than a Koenigsegg?! Weird.

I agree, don't go to the shows were most dudes are wearing Depend undergarments or look like a collection of old, fat gray Teletubbies.

Most of the "Fast and Furious" crowd have been smoked by a Tesla on the street and respect the car. They other guys are pissed they dropped so much coin into their car and a glorified golf cart smokes their pride and joy.

Glad the younger generation gets it, and frankly that's all that matters!

The SuperBeetle was co-developed with performance specialist APR and is based on a 2013 Beetle Turbo. The car’s standard 2.0 TSI engine has been updated with an APR Stage IV GTX Turbocharger System that boosts the output from 200 to more than 500 HP! This setup is combined with a high-performance intercooler system, as well as a host of Stage IV components including, an ECU upgrade and a new APR RSC Turboback Exhaust System. In order to improve the car’s traction, the tuner also installed a 4MOTION all-wheel drive system from the limited-edition Golf R and an upgraded Haldex all-wheel drive race controller.

Personally, I love sleepers - when I get my P100D, I'm putting a 60 badge on it to really add insult to injury when doing stoplight launches. This will be added to my sleeper Miata and sleeper FJ.

One tip, though: If you allow people to sit in the car, plug in your charging cable. That serves two purposes: It attracts attention to the electric aspect of the car, and it prevents anyone from accidentally putting the car into gear and causing an unfortunate accident if the car should move. (This was a suggestion from another Tesla owner who attended these types of events.)

Love the pics @Stewie26 and wow your red Roadster looks fabulous. Every day I get closer to deciding on a MCR Model 3 over the white I was planning on. Your post is an interesting look into people's awareness and comments on your Roadster.

Too bad I wasn't there with you when the Ferrari guy came up to you because I recalled reading these articles just a few weeks ago and would have mentioned it to him...or maybe he was aware of it and upset over the undeniable trend of manufacturers joining the BEV ranks even if they have stated basically hell no way! The times are changing like it or not...and clearly "not" for that one owner.

We have only driven our MS to one Coffee and Cars event in our area, very small time, and honestly was so disappointed by the guys there who ignored us and wouldn't even talk to us when I tried to make conversation with them about their cars. At least you had people willing to talk to you and share info. If you love cars in general just don't get that kind of snobby attitude.

Yes I have experienced similar response. Definitely the younger crowd “gets it”. I’ve been to 3 Cars and Coffee in the Raleigh area (Wake Forest, Cary, and Morrisville). For all 3 showings I was the only Tesla there. Frankly, I was shocked and to be honest disappointed that my fellow Tesla owners are not as evangelistic of their Tesla’s as I am! Ha, but that is ok as the Roadster garners so much attention and fascination with most. I will continue to go to these events as it’s cool to see so many different types of cars. The Roadster in my area is quite rare, so it’s nice to share it with a community that mostly appreciates the car. My lasts C&C I had a couple of McLauren fan boys hating on my car. They were very rude and highly critical of my car and Tesla in general. One was wearing a McLauren jacket....so I started asking him about his car, and sure enough he doesn’t own one. Thought that was quite funny. So, I will say that the C&C web pages did show me some love, I made the first pictures of the Morrisville one!

And one or two events were coordinated with Telsa Owners of New England. One of our local members of NEEAA is very assertive at organizing groups of us to attend the shows, as well as EV events. There is strength in numbers! We try to park the EVs together if we can (not always possible, unfortunately), which encourages group conversations and enables us to watch out for each others' cars.

Funny how different car groups seem to attract different types of personalities.
Currently, I have three different sports cars including the newly purchased roadster.
My daily driver is a C7 LT2 corvette. When you buy a Vette you are automatically in a club, like it or not.
Here in SoCal, when driving on the road, 90 percent of the time you will get a wave and sometimes a smile from other Vette drivers.
My wife loves it. It is kind of a good ol boy club with the most camaraderie among owners.
I also have a classic 88 Porsche Carrera Cabaret and mostly drive it in the summer. Never ever got a wave from another Porsche owner. In fact, they seem to be looking straight ahead most of the time.
When my wife first took delivery of her Tesla "S" she would wave to other Tesla drivers. She says she gets waves back probably half the time. The Tesla roadster is fairly rare and I enjoy seeing the camaraderie in this forum.

Yes we have a Tesla group in the Triangle. It’s a good suggestion to recruit them to these events.

I’ll 2nd that. The haters are less vocal, or even non existent when there are several EVs (not just Teslas). In 2016, my last hotrod show (open to all vehicles, though still primarily muscle ICE cars), we had 3 Leafs, 2 Tesla S, 2 Volts, 1 BMWi, and 1 e-Golf. Not a single hater stopped to harass us, though I did recognize one from a previous show but he walked right on by.

We participated in an EV event last summer and yes pretty much everyone there was EV friendly. The only "hater" I would say I encountered was the friend of someone who was checking out EVs with her since she was in the market for a new car. Ladies I'd guess in their 50-60s. The "friend" was trying to convince her friend not to buy an EV due to range issues while running errands or going on a trip to Lake Tahoe. The "friend" didn't like the minimal interior (other lady did) but did concede that the alcantera on our car did add some "class" to it. Forgot what other negative comments she had. She didn't realize as she was talking that we were the owners and I could tell she felt a bit awkward after that. To each their own. Do wonder what her friend ended up buying down the road.
