New Jag SUV and charging speed?

Size is the differentiating factor. Size dictates functionality, comfort and safety. This Jag looks smaller in every dimension compared to Model X.
smaller outside, similar inside according to the articles I've read.
Size isn't the only differentiator. A Kia Optima or Ford Fusion doesn't really compete with a 3 series, but they're of similar size. Luxury is also a differentiator.

Just look at my previous post showing front of the Jag - middle seat looks as cramped as Bolt's.

Initial reaction to Bloomberg link:
  1. Jaguar unveiled its first all-electric vehicle, the I-Pace Concept [not "real" to me as a consumer]
  2. five-seat SUV [doesn't compete with 6 and 7 seat X]
  3. will go on sale in 2018 [doesn't provide competition for S, X, or 3 until 2018+]
  4. will produce the equivalent of 400hp [i.e. doesn't produce 400hp, produces "ehp" or some other FUD unit]
  5. Jaguar revealed the hybrid electric Project C-X75 concept in 2010 ... <number numbers> in theory <numbers> [not "real" to me as a consumer]
  6. sport driving position [intriguing, want more details]
  7. 90 kWh ... able to reach 80 percent full power in 90 minutes on a home charger [I wonder if Kevin or Jack will make an adapter for Tesla charging...]
  8. declined to say ... price [not "real" to me as a consumer]
I look forward to seeing if they advance beyond the concept stage in more than just talk.

Cd of 0.29  will not bode well for highway range.

Good photos here

Jaguar I-Pace Electric SUV: World Debut Specs, Photos

Just read this. Looks interesting. My question: How can it charge to 80% in 90 mins on a home charger? Is that with 80 amps?
This is great news from Jaguar, admitting that there is a real market for a high end EV SUV.

As to the statement, quote: "I-Pace will be able to reach 80 percent full power in 90 minutes on a home charger." I don't believe that for a moment. You could not do that with 100A AC power. That would require DC charging at home. Not going to happen. Unless of course the statement should have read, "I-Pace will be able to charge from 60 percent to 80 percent full power in 90 minutes on a home charger." ;)

Details on the car were lacking. I have no idea why it has a huge front grille. But I hope Jaguar makes this car and I hope they sell enough to keep making it.

Jag never claimed the 90 minutes on a home charger, some press person misinterpreted them. They claim 90 minutes on a 50kW DC fast charger.

"Download a brochure" at Jaguar I-PACE Concept Car - First All Electric SUV | Jaguar USA
  1. will arrive at retailers in 2018
  2. "an targeted" [nitpicker's corner: in a brochure? I'm not an expert in British English, but really?]
  3. 80 percent charge achieved in 90 minutes and 100 percent in just over two hours using 50kW DC fast charging
  4. "two, super-intuitive touch-screens" [interested to see where the 2nd touchscreen is... update: page 38]
  5. "0-60mph time of approximately four seconds" [my reading: 4.3s]
  6. Jaguar Land Rover is committed to an electric future, starting with entry into ... FIA Formula E ... [cool]
  7. page 16 [the mix of red and blue really screams i8 to me]
  8. 220+ mile range targeted (US EPA cycle)
  9. "19 cu. ft. in luggage compartment" + "additional space in front storage area"
  10. 23 in. wheels
  11. "12 in. high-resolution Interactive Driver Display" ["high-resolution" is a waste of brochure space, hasn't meant anything since VGA]
  12. 400hp Total power output from the front and rear electric motors [I wonder if they'll play the word game with "motor power" that Tesla did]
  13. 0.29 Cd
  14. flush door handles
  15. page 20 start/stop button at the bottom of the steering wheel [seems unsafe to me]
  16. page 21 speakers on the dash [look like bad aftermarket to me]
  17. page 23, 24 climate "rotary controllers" x4 [look clunky to me, like sink faucet]
  18. page 23 door handle above driver door [omg!]
  19. page 30 "accelerates from 0-60 in approximately after four seconds" [this awkward misphrasing is at least the 4th version I've seen, tells me they really want to say under, or at least at, 4 seconds but can't]
  20. 90kWh battery comprising 36 modules
  21. Nickel-Cobalt-Manganese
  22. as the driver lifts off the accelerator pedal, the motors provide regenerative braking [nod to Tesla]
  23. Using the Drive button within the transmission controls integrated into the center console, the driver can increase the level of regenerative braking [some buzz on TMC periodically asking for this feature]
  24. page 38 screens [If you draw a rectangle around the upper and lower screens, and the dials, you have basically the Tesla 17" screen in the S prototype -- sans the curve]

Truly a beautiful car.
Hope it is a successful selling EV.
I LOVE the full glass roof--very sexy.
I do kinda wonder why it has a grille, but it is at least two years away from final production and ready to be sold (still some time to rework it a bit more).

Every manufacturer that commits to bringing excellence in design and execution to the EV market-place makes it better for the consumers.
AND everyone who has a set of lungs that breathes, (because there will be one less ICE on the road).

It has a grill!

Very nice design. Here is Engadget's picture which gives an idea of the "aggressive" design:

Jag never claimed the 90 minutes on a home charger, some press person misinterpreted them. They claim 90 minutes on a 50kW DC fast charger.
And that is why I said I didn't believe it, because I was sure someone, somewhere, made a mistake.

Of course the claimed time to 80% figure was chosen because the time to get to 90 or 100 takes much longer.

I suspect the claimed time is for something like 20 to 80%. That I can believe. Which is much slower than what a Supercharger can do.

Okay Jaguar, now make the "concept car" a reality.

I welcome the competition. It should be noted thought that it is at least a year away from production, and I don't know the extent, if any, of Jaguar's 'fast charging' network. Without that, this will remain a local vehicle, not able to travel a significant amount of range in a timely fashion. I do think it will complement the X and S market nicely, much better than the current examples of other Electified vehicles. But if they want to truly compete with Tesla they are going to have a lot of work ahead of them.

I'm sceptical, hopefully unfounded, that Jaguar can make the switch (on-it's-own, so to speak) to Electric. I still think it would be much better that they bought-in the battery / drive-train from Tesla and stuck to doing a gorgeous coach-building job, skills that they have in abundance. That would also solve the fast-charging issue.

Maybe its just my memories of British Leyland and how dreadful "progress" was in those days ...

I think your skepticism is unfounded. If you strip away the high tech toys that Tesla so likes, EVs are vastly simpler than ICEs. And I very much doubt that Jag is building their own motor/inverters/batteries. I'm sure they're buying those from a specialist. EVs are really a potential savior to an excellent "coach builder".
