Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

Tesla has done this before... coming out after the fact that all vehicles made in the last two months actually have a bigger battery that can be software upgraded. Or, for the S 2.0 refresh, they didn't announce it until all of the new ones coming off the line were the new version. It's the...

Rumor Mill: Upcoming 500-Mile Range For Tesla Model S, 400 For Model X

It's alway the california folks that don't get it. Tell you what... feel free to not buy a 500 mile rang battery if/when it comes out. With my real life experience in more remote, cold and less well SC serviced area of the world, I'll sign up tomorrow. One other circumstance to think of...

Rumor Mill: Upcoming 500-Mile Range For Tesla Model S, 400 For Model X

Unless you've got a heat pump water heater (never heard of one), then no it's not. :-). You might want to take another look at those specs.

Commercial Crew Transportation Capability (CCtCap) SpaceX and Boeing Developments

Except that in the 737 they do have the ability to turn off the auto-trim. That is the normal process by which to deal with a runaway trim on any plane with automatic altitude control.

California bans per-minute billing; Tesla Superchargers will need displays

I'm not a big govt person, but I do figure that one of the roles of government is to facilitate competition be providing a level playing field where consumers can easily compare prices. Left entirely on their own, oligopolistic sellers of certain commodities (think cell phone service) will be...

California bans per-minute billing; Tesla Superchargers will need displays

I should note... I'm not against some extra parking fee, if charging is below a certain rate. Selling price should reflect the cost drivers - which are partially the power and partially the use of the equipment and space. As charging gets faster, and as chargers become more common, the...

California bans per-minute billing; Tesla Superchargers will need displays

You can't make one law for Tesla and one for everybody else. Further, you need the measurement system to be certified - which it won't be in a car. It's about time that this happens. Charging by the minute is just stupid, and leads to bad incentives for the charging service supplier...

Plaid Model S to get bigger battery pack

I had a 2014 P85D. I loved it, but it had its share of problems - nothing on the power train, but lots of accessory issues. It didn't overly stress me. When design anything new from the ground up, there WILL be problems. Tesla has had, in my opinion, comparatively few. My 2018 100D has, on...

50 hp software upgrade coming for Model S

I kinda doubt it. I suspect this has to do with the PM motors - which pre-raven Ss don't have. They've had a LONG time to optimize the AC motors, and I can't imagine that there's anything left to squeeze out. But I would LOVE to be proven wrong. :-)

Model S to the Nürburgring Next Week!

I really really doubt it. "Don't fight the battle that you can't win.". Elon & team aren't that stupid.

Model S to the Nürburgring Next Week!

I wonder if Tesla has been holding off on releasing some improvements - software/hardware or both - until Porsche released these results? They certainly knew that it was coming and that Porsche wouldn't be able to resist hammering Tesla a bit. Maybe we'll see an announcement about a S/X track...

Discussion of Chinese development of reusability

Sigh. I wonder if the Chinese got hold of the SpaceX drawings or if they worked from photographs. They're rather shameless in the way that they poach technology developed elsewhere. Is it any wonder why there is a backlash in the west? :-(

Starship Orbital Prototype - Florida Version

Wiki Sudden Loss Of Range With 2019.16.x Software

Ah... ok. Not to excuse the failures, but I suspect that they do a LOT of testing on older cars. And I know from my own experience that, even in modular systems, with well specified interfaces, and where the connected systems SHOULD be compatible, there will be a lot of bizarre and unexpected...

Would you guys like to see Apple buy Telsa?

Not buying. In terms of leaps of imagination, overcoming barriers to customer adoption and potential to change direction of society from that which otherwise have been, there is simply no comparison. Tesla and the iPhone came about at roughly the same time. Had Apple not come out with the...

Wiki Sudden Loss Of Range With 2019.16.x Software

Microsoft does A LOT of testing to validate that new software works with older systems. Their problem is that the set of combinations and permutations of hardware and software is literally endless. It's why Apple has a reputation as being more reliable; their OS runs on a MUCH smaller set of...

  24. S

Would you guys like to see Apple buy Telsa?

Yeah... I'm not seeing it. Making a prettier UI isn't revolutionary. It's evolutionary, driven by improvements in battery tech and display tech. Upending a 100 year old technology that has spawned entire industries and economies, with those same industries desperately hoping you'll fail, and...

Wiki Sudden Loss Of Range With 2019.16.x Software

I'm suspicious that Tesla is nervous about creating new vehicle variants. Once they start putting newer gen batteries into old cars, they are creating new hardware combinations that never existed before, and that increases the number of combinations that have to be tested prior to pushing out...

Model 3 Standard Range (Canada) Range: 150km

I don't think I'd take that risk. You might be stuck with a car that nobody ever wants to buy. If you're bound and determined to do that, then lease it.
  29. S

Would you guys like to see Apple buy Telsa?

What Apple developed was evolutionary, not revolutionary. Microsoft had had full screen windows PDAs for a long time. And of course there were blackberry smartphones. It was obvious that these things were going to some together. Apple just did first, and did a better job than anybody else...

Is now a good time for a new model S?

That's the mantra that Elon preaches but it will always be wrong. The last buyers before an unexpected change will always be upset. It's happened many times before. And as sure I'm sitting here, the last buyers before the next batch of major changes comes out, whenever that happens, will be...

Wiki Sudden Loss Of Range With 2019.16.x Software

I do agree that Tesla should be offering replacement packs. You can buy an engine for any car out there; why not this? I fear that most people wouldn't see the price as reasonable though. I expect you'd be looking at 20K+. But, no other manufacturer engineers newer tech into older cars...
  32. S

Is now a good time for a new model S?

One good thing about the current S is that it's a mature platform. Most of the bugs have been worked out and they're very reliable - at least in my experience. A significantly refreshed car is going to come with a new crop of headaches that will take year to fix up. As to what will happen in...

Oh man. I can just imagine the roof raising that would go on, were Tesla to offer this. It would be treated by the media as an admission of failure and the negative spin would be horrible.

Model S range and interior update imminent?

I'll agree it's limited relative to cheaper cars. But BMW has a 7 series, Merc has a S Series. These are also limited models. But they contribute disproportionately to profit and brand cachet that makes people look on the brand as being something to aspire to. The lower end German cars are...

Would you guys like to see Apple buy Telsa?

Well... it may come to that if Tesla has a significant misstep. So, then pick your poison.. Apple Google Ford Daimler China These are the most likely candidates, I think. I think I'd be split 50/50 on either Apple or Daimler.
  36. S

Would you guys like to see Apple buy Telsa?

Did you say that APPLE has the best customers service?!!! Holy Toledo... how far we've fallen if that's true. I do like Apple products... they're not perfect but work well for the most part. But when I deal with them, I feel like they're programmed to maximize the product of frustration level...

Free Super Charging on Model S

If you want to feel better, think about all those folks who took delivery of an S100D just before all of the price drops. I could have pretty much gotten a P100DL for what I paid for my 100D. You have to do a LOT of supercharging to make the slightest dent in that hit. What do you...
  38. S

Model S range and interior update imminent?

The can do that, but that's just icing on the cake (except for the prior SC access which would be a really bad idea, I think). The vehicle still has to be unequivocally better. Right now... it is in some regards, but no so much in others. And that's a problem. I do believe it's still coming...

    Raven doesn't add up

Exactly. There's more to it than just the motor. The rest of the components need to be able to carry the additional load without damage. You can make pretty much any car go faster, at the cost of more repairs.

Model S is long in the tooth

The A5 has it as well. But yes, it seems rather specific to a certain style of car; I don't know why.. They work the same as in the model S - when you pull handle they quickly lower the window a fraction of an inch to release the pressure on the seal. And when the door closes they push the...

Model S is long in the tooth

I agree. Many other new, higher end cars have frameless windows: Audi A7, BMW 6/8 Series, Mercedes CLS.
  42. S

Model S range and interior update imminent?

Every car manufacturer needs high end halo cars. They're never the biggest seller by volume but they usually disproportionately contribute to profits. And they create an "image" for the brand. You need something for the Model 3/Y drivers to aspire to. The Model S, as it presently is, isn't...

Lobbyist for tesla/uber gave me the timeline for FSD

I think we're saying more or less the same thing. My main point is that the current attempts have no redundancy and I cannot see anything resembling true FSD without that. And I also think that the "safer than a human" target is fantasy. That will mean exactly nothing when the lawsuits start...

Lobbyist for tesla/uber gave me the timeline for FSD

Personally, I think even 5-10 is wildly optimistic for FSD. I've been telling people minimum 20 years for true FSD, but that we will have limited FSD before then in gradually increasing sets of circumstances. In order to implement hands of brain off, sit back and watch TV FSD, you need to have...

Model S - I keep losing credit cards and checks in the console

Yes... I've likely got all sorts of crap in there. There Model S Tesla console is not well designed. You've got a big, poorly accessible, open space between the console and dash, and then inside the console, below the phone plug. It's because the original cars had no console and Tesla...

Tesla lease buyout - crazy penalty or error?

What I did do, on my prior P85D, was to negotiate a turn-in/buyout/trade in one shot near the end of my lease. At the time, the trade-in value of the car was about $20K more than the residual. That was because the Canadian dollar dropped substantially between the times that the lease started...

Tesla lease buyout - crazy penalty or error?

I doubt they'd do it. That would set a bad precedent and open the floodgates for people to try to negotiate on residuals with every car turned in.
