New Mexico Law Prohibits Tesla Stores and Service Centers

I'm sure Tesla would love to have a service center somewhere in NM. But that doesn't change the fact that every other location I know of that Tesla has called a "Showroom" has been a gallery only, with no actual sales allowed on premises and no vehicle service capability. These are locations like inside malls or pop-up store fronts, etc.

That's a fair read, but wouldn't Tesla want to have a service center somewhere in NM rather than relying exclusively on mobile service in the state? Maybe service will be added later? Or maybe they're hoping to use this site as leverage to get the law changed to eventually be able to open a service center elsewhere in NM?
Maybe Tesla could have a "secret" service center in NM? One that's not open for the public but is a garage available for mobile technicians to use for jobs requiring a garage. I know Tesla has similar garages (or deals with other car shops) in other states. It would allow them to save a lot of money by not putting in a big service center and would help them repair cars in NM a lot faster.

Until recently, NM Tesla Rangers took weekly trips to El Paso Texas to grab parts they needed for their upcoming repair schedule. I was told that this is now resolved, and the rangers now have a local inventory. I didn't pry for details.

ABQ NM - experience with a charged but dead 2018 X under warranty in the garage. No doors opening, no app access, offline, nothing, dead.
Tesla roadside had it towed to El Paso.
My responsibility to pick it up.
Drive 8 hours there and back to get it, or hire a vehicle delivery service for $600-$1200 to bring it back depending on how soon I need it (now).
We need a service center for central NM.

Agree that you need a service center in central NM! Have a friend in Albuquerque who might someday be interested in a Tesla.

Dead in garage happened to me twice, except that the 300 mile tow was to Littleton CO. The first time was the infamous MCU failure, under warranty. Since the mobile service ranger didn't have a replacement MCU at the time, he brought me a rental car (Enterprise) and took my car to Littleton on the same flatbed trailer. I drove the rental to pick up my car. No cost because it was under warranty. Don't know if they are that generous nowadays.

The second time was a completely dead in garage — couldn't even unplug the EVSE — out of warranty. Tesla roadside quoted me a tow cost from a local company of $1400 and suggested that I check with my insurance company. I called State Farm and they verified that Littleton was the "nearest place the car could be serviced," then arranged for the tow and took care of it. At no cost to me, not even a bill. I was pleased, to put it mildly.

When my car was ready for pickup I rented a car (Enterprise) at the nearest city, to drive to Littleton to pick up my car. When I told Littleton service that I had done that, they picked up the cost of the rental (Tesla still had a deal with Enterprise, don't know if they still do). Even though I was out of warranty!

So, my take is that Tesla service has (or had) some discretion on how they handle those long distance repairs. YMMV.

From the conversation I had today with a Tesla Rep, it does seem as though there will be a service center at the “SF” location. We will see Thursday.

So, there are garages for service in the building, as well as several cars waiting for prep. There is no supercharger, just the regular slow 48A chargers in the back parking area. I suppose I have the first customer Tesla parked at the service center. As it was a small casino. it has a large open area inside, so making the service area wasn't very hard.

Did anyone who RSVP for the Thursday opening get a code or anything? I registered, hit submit, and that’s about all that happened. I will go anyways, just to look of anything. But so far no communication from RSVPing (assuming it went through when I hit submit…)

Was able to make it to the Tesla opening. Can confirm it is a full service store. Delivery, sales, and full service. They have 4 or 5 chargers there now, and was told they will likely get some super chargers as well (not sure if any will be available for non service Tesla’s). Over all very cool that there is a service shop in NM

Nice! Would be great if they can eventually add superchargers there. Now showing on Tesla's web map too:

Just saw the local news coverage from ABC’s KOAT7.

**Time to update the title of this thread!
Technically, they are still prohibited by New Mexico's laws but Tesla found a way around the laws by working with the Nambé Pueblo to locate the service center on their land..

Ahhh, Lol what ever works and I hope it helps bring economic benefits to the tribal community there. I know covid has dealt a bad blow to the various tribes in the southwest and sure this area is no different. Definitely good news for Tesla owners in the area and those traveling around and through the state.

Anyone know off-hand which other states don't allow Tesla to operate these days? Seems like the reservation loophole could work in a lot of them!
According to this wiki page on Tesla's US dealership disputes, it's New Mexico*, Alabama*, South Carolina*, Louisiana, Texas, Connecticut, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Oklahoma that still don't allow direct sales. While the 3 states with the asterisk at the start of the list also prevent service centers.

'Direct sales' is too broad a catch-all. E.g., I know that El Paso has service and test drives
