Makes sense that the car wouldn't let you use autopilot with your body hanging out from an open door 
Now with as much sensors and software as our cars have, and everyone pushing for security, we're bound to have some false positives sometimes. As the cars age I expect these weird problems to pop more often, and they might be difficult to diagnose on our own.

Better error messages save support time and headaches. If the message had said "Cruise control unavailable--a door may be open" I could have fixed it immediately, and I would have slept better last night.
