With the Gigafacgtory and new cells up and running, Elon's statement about future pack upgrades may be closer to materializing over the next 3 years or so, once they get all the Mod 3's out the door and have excess/enough capacity. If you don't *need* long range now, you will almost certainly get more range for the same $9k with newer cell tech and overall pack cost reductions in the next few years. If keeping the car for 10 years, upgrade pack in 5.
 
Personally I invested in Tesla for the LAST 3+ years so that I could get the Tesla I wanted, mostly that means a Model 3 ASAP. There is value to me in being first. "You can always tell a pioneer by the arrows in his back." But if the direction of Tesla stock this AM is any indicator I may not sell any of my stock to buy the car. It has been quite a run so far.
