Purchasing a Used Model S P90D - An Emotional Rollercoaster

I want to start off by saying a big THANK YOU to every single member who has posted in the forums, after this weekend, the information on this site has been so incredibly helpful.

I would like to share my husband’s and my experience purchasing, picking up, and our first 3 days with our used 2015 Model S P90D.

March 24 – My husband filled out the Tesla Lending application (we now know it’s probably better to wait until you receive communication from Tesla before filling this out, as the “approval” is only good for 30 days)

March 25 – Placed the deposit on the 2015 Model S P90D

March 26 – Kyle Desmond (Used Vehicle Sales Advisor) emailed my husband to say congratulations, etc, etc.

March 26 – Separate email from Jana Park (Delivery Advisor) emailed to say the car was being transferred to the service center

March 29 – we emailed Jana to ask a few questions about Tesla Lending and incomplete items on our online checklist

April 1 – follow up email sent to Jana

April 2 – response from Jana, she answered our questions and advised the car’s ETA to the Tampa Delivery Center was 4/9 – 4/10

April 8 – email from Jana – ETA was now 4/10 – 4/11

April 10 – email from Jana that the car had arrived at the Tampa Delivery Center, we scheduled our pick up for 4/12 @ 4pm (we received our appointment confirmation about 5 mins after we hung up with Jana)

April 11 – Email from Lexie Campisi (Delivery Experience Specialist) – wanted to make sure everything was in line for the delivery

April 12 – 4pm – picked up the car – there was only one other customer at the Tampa Delivery Center when we arrived – we met with Kayla to sign all of the paperwork, then we FINALLY got to see the car!

Car: The car was in great shape. In the pictures that were sent to us, there was quite a bit of damage to the rims, the rims now appear to be brand new on the car…there is condensation in the driver taillight (which was not in the pictures). I can say they *maybe* ran the car thru the car wash but I can’t be certain because the outside was pretty dirty. The inside is relatively clean (especially compared to what we have seen online) – there are black, grease looking handprints on the headliner (which I think we can remove with a little elbow grease) and the seats and various other spots around the car. We used the checklist that a member created – it was SO helpful, especially when your husband wants to just drive away with the car. I went thru each item and made sure everything worked.

They gave us 2 key fobs BUT the second key fob didn't work – we asked Kayla, she says “oh it must need a new battery, we don’t have any though, and you can call for a service ranger to fix it” – Spoiler Alert: there wasn’t even a battery in the second key fob! And apparently, you have to get the key fob programmed at a service center -_-

Now this is where the rollercoaster of emotions starts – it’s been QUITE the rollercoaster! Extreme highs and soul-crushing lows…

We drove to Ocala, FL after we took delivery of the car – we tried charging the car at the hotel’s Destination Charger, the car would initially connect (charging at 3 miles/hr) but would stop charging. We thought maybe it’s the charger, it’s a fluke, it’s a new hotel, etc, etc. But I start to worry and say we should bring the car to the Ocala Supercharger down the street, just in case. It’s 10pm on a Friday, we plug the car in – the car won’t charge…gives us a message “Charging is starting…Charging will start momentarily”, then “Charging Stopped” – full PANIC sets in…as we are 3.5 hours from home…I quickly start checking this forum for tips/tricks. We unplug/plug/unplug to no avail, we move to a different station…plug/unplug/plug. A fellow Tesla owner walks up (super nice) and tells us that she has had problems with this Supercharger station in the past but to keep plugging/unplugging…FINALLY the car starts charging (after what feels like FOREVER). We charge up and leave but still shaken from the situation.

April 13 – we start the car and the dashboard shows the message “Driver Assistance Feature unavailable” – I have a serious "WTF have we gotten ourselves into" moment…I jump on the forum and find out that we have lost AP, CC and other functions with this message. My husband is frustrated, I’m pissed…we park the car for a few hours to attend a football game, we start the car – no message, and everything works fine!

April 14 – We try charging the car at the Ocala Supercharger in the morning – same thing as Friday night. I call Roadside Assistance, but as soon as the rep answers the phone, the car randomly starts charging (talk about full-on panic followed by being fully elated). The rep looks at the car and says an alert is saying the car cannot accept a fast charge but it will be able to accept a charge from a wall plug and she is completely surprised the car is even charging. She says we should schedule a service call. We charge the car as full as it will charge. We stop at the Brandon, FL Supercharger station – SAME THING!!! It takes 20-25 mins to get the car to start charging.

We just got home and plugged the car into the wall charger – it’s charging, slow but it’s charging so I’m feeling a little better. Someone online suggested that the older Teslas might not be completely compatible with the newer Supercharging stations(??). We have a Supercharging station about 6 miles from our house which has been there for years, my husband is going to take the car down there to see if this theory holds true. We have an appointment scheduled on Wed 4/24 at the Tampa Service Center (2 hours away) for the charging issue and the condensation in the driver tail light.

Final thoughts: I’ve been through every emotion I have this weekend, my husband and I are completely exhausted from the ups and downs. I question the “70 point check” Tesla claims to do on used cars, being able to charge the car is VITAL and it’s worrisome we can’t charge right away at the Superchargers. I love the car but I’ll be more in love when we can get these issues resolved.
And if you are picking your previously loved Tesla up from a Delivery Center, may I suggest asking them to plug the car in (in front of you) to confirm it will charge before you leave :)

Sorry to hear you are having trouble. I am supposed to pick up my car which was supposed to be ready Saturday, now on Monday. I've read alot on line too, so I am a bit worried about having issues out of the box as it were. Was the car charged to 90% when you picked it up ? What software version are you at ? Obviously being able to simply charge the car is critical. It does sound like car issues, not SC issues.

No, the car was not charged to 90% - it was at 198 miles...which by my math is about ~18-20 miles short of a 90% charge (the car only charged to 240 miles at the Ocala Supercharger). I'll have to double check the version the car is running (maybe we are running an out-dated version?). It is totally car issues, not Delivery Center issues, except the key fob thing...they could have batteries on hand. When I asked if the fob would 'know' the car, once the battery was changed they immediately said: "yes, it's just a radio frequency". I wish it was as simple as that...Good luck with your delivery! I'll be anxious to hear how everything goes :)

I know it probably doesn’t feel like this, but It’ll be ok. The charging issues are a major deal, but major deals are easier to get their attention and addressed. Hell maybe you’ll get a V3 90kw pack out of it (I’m not saying you pack is bad, I have no idea.)

I had condensation in my taillight as well when I picked up my car. They replaced both taillight about a week after I picked up the car in my driveway. I asked them to do both since one was having issue, they had no problem doing that.

The driver assist features issue is either your radar sensor or your AP camera being out of calibration or faulty. They replaced my camera and then programmed my radar sensor. It took 3-4 attempts, but I haven’t had any issues in a couple of months.

I wish I could say you won’t have issues, but I’m not sure I believe that. They will get them fixed though. I am far from a Tesla apologist and I too am a bit disillusioned by my CPO purchase. I will say with all of the problems I’ve had, I wouldn’t change a thing if I had to do it over (unless you could have warned me prices were going to plummet in 6 months.)

I totally appreciate your response and I agree, everything will be okay. I think the charging issue was amplified because we weren't close to home. And it's kind of a pain that we have to go back to Tampa to have the car looked at. But to your point, the charging thing is a major issue and we have the warranty - so hopefully it will be fixed quickly .
Side note - we brought the car to our local Superchargers (we are very lucky to have two very close to our house). One is an older Sueprcharger station as I mentioned above, my husband had to plug/unplug a couple times and the car started charging on the third attempt. And then we tried again at a newer Supercharger station and we got the car to start charging on the third attempt as well. Oddly, we felt a little better.
Also we gave her a good wash and detail and she looks as good as new, a little elbow grease goes a long way.

This may not be your problem, and after a few "insertions" you sort of get the feel for when it is inserted all the way.

But pay attention to it, and if that is the problem it will save a trip to Tampa.

IIRC, there was a batch of charge ports (maybe in 2016?) that were exceptionally tight and were replaced.

The older cars are harder to plug in. Our 2013 S needs a really good shove in a single motion to get it in and charging. 2018 X slips in easily.
I too was going to mention this. We had issues early on and I think we were being too gentle with our new pride & joy. Make sure you wait until the ring turns white which indicates it is ready to accept the plug. Then, when you go to insert the plug, make sure it's lined up straight and give it a single, hard quick shove all the way until it bottoms out. It also is a good idea to blow out your port well with compressed air. Just make sure you don't invert or shake while spraying so that liquid comes out if using the canned compressed air. Electricity + moisture = danger. There may be some debris inside preventing the plug from fully seating properly or making solid contact. If all of this results in no improvement I would have TS replace that charge port under warranty post haste.

I think it was the earlier models (although I could be wrong) that had some issues. The 2013 we have had the port replaced prior to us getting it.

Thank you for your post of your situation. I am very sorry you had this ordeal, and can imagine how deflated you must have been. Please keep us updated on any future fixes.

How can you tell how old your supercharger station is?

I picked up my 2015 P90D just last Thursday. After dealing with some frustrating delays in correspondence from my delivery specialist in CA(I live in DE), the car arrived in Baltimore from Las Vegas as planned. So far, everything has been up to spec with the exception of some cosmetic damage on the carbon fiber spoiler that was not indicated in the pics.

The car has 27k miles on it and still smells new!

I look forward to learning as much as I can from this forum!

We only know the 'age' of the Superchargers because they are located in shopping centers we frequent (a lot!) and we watched them being built.
Your car looks amazing, congrats!!

Greetings from another DE resident who also recently took delivery of a new Model S from Owings Mills.

I took delivery on 4/5 of a 2015 85D with just 17k miles on it and most options. Experience there was okay and the car was in near perfect condition and well detailed looking like it just came off the showroom floor.

Anyway - congrats on your new ride. So far I am loving mine.

Hey that's great! Congrats! I just had the Tesla wall connector installed in my home the other day, which was quite the ordeal since our panel was on the opposite side of the house, and our basement is finished. The "official" Telsa install crew did not have the settings correct and I had to open the connector and correct them myself. Have discovered a few little bugs since delivery, but love the car!

If you are in Northern DE sometime let me know. Maybe we can grab a coffee and compare notes if you'd like. I am in/around Newark/Middletown.

Nice! I can only imagine having to run that wiring across the house. Right now I am using the L2 EVSE I had mounted for my previous car (Chevy Volt) which is working well enough for my driving needs but I am thinking about upgrading to either the HPWC or a 50 amp J1772. Thankfully my panel is on the same wall as the driveway (but basement is finished). I am hoping the electrician can either reuse the existing wiring or just snake along it to get to the panel.

Going to be taking my first longer trip this weekend so will get to see how supercharging works.

I'm in the MOT area so not too far away from you.

Take care,
-DJ

Good luck with the trip. I have Supercharged twice at the DE rest stop. Pretty convenient and quick. I did that before I got my connector installed, Let me know how you make out on this weekend.

Cheers,
Steve
