because there's also a time limit. It's 3 years.. so if you got a white or green sticker, you're out and you can't re-register. So it's not just "If it's electric you're ok for the HOV lane"

i had no idea.... so to clarify, if i get a purple sticker, I can only use it for 3 years and then i cant register my car for the HOV lane anymore?

Correct.

White/Green/Yellow - all are expired.

Red (issued in 2018) - expires Jan 1, 2022
Purple (issued in 2019) - expires Jan 1, 2023

You get the rest of the of the year in which you are issued the sticker plus 3 years. And once a car has been issued a sticker, it is no longer eligible even if you sell it to someone else.

The amount of brainlessness in the entire HOV plan is stunning. During the highest volume of traffic use, let's close down lanes. And let's change what constitutes a "commute" load of passengers from area to area entirely by caprice. Meanwhile, those polluting cars which don't qualify for the HOV lanes get to sit, idling and smoking, that much longer as they watch the "special cases" speed by in the lanes closed to them. Time for the whole concept to be scrapped.
