Both the car and your phone need an active internet connection (via WiFi or cellular).

Are you sure the car is *there*? If someone were to throw a foil blanket over it and load it onto a flatbed you definitely won't get a connection.

Local police around the country do welfare checks for distant people who cannot contact someone who they suspect may be in distress. They may do the same for you if there is a possibility that your car was stolen. Call the local police department where the car is located and see if they will check to see if it is still at the location where you parked it.
