Russia/Ukraine conflict

Good time for Ukraine to take out more Russian oil refineries, depots, and other petroleum infrastructure.

Let's hope they wait until after the US election. High gas prices helps the people who would do nothing but harm to Ukraine if they win.

Dropping crude prices is a good thing for the west and hurting Russia.

There is a difference between crude oil prices and refined product prices (gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel). Ultimately the customers [voters in democracies] only care about the refined product prices.

If Ukraine is inclined to play along with that strategy, they should continue to go after Russian refineries alone until U.S. elections and completed, as doing so leads to Russia exporting more oil to world markets to be refined off their shores. Refined oil product prices in that case go up only for Russians.

In fact, this does seem to be their strategy and may be part of the reason why prices have come down, across-the-board for petroleum and petroleum products in recent weeks.

At the peak of the Ukrainian campaign against refineries, the cost of refined fuels went up worldwide. Russia had already discontinued exporting refined fuels, but with the refineries down they started importing them. That caused fuel prices to go up.

Yes crude prices are somewhat separate, but knocking out refineries does cause fuel prices to rise at the pump. Americans are very twitchy about inflation right now, even though the inflation rate is down quite a bit. Americans still have the perception that the economy is bad and inflation is out of control when it isn't. Best not to feed those notions.

The economics explanation was covered in this thread on this prior post last month from Foreign Affairs. It explained how Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries are very effective and do not raise gasoline or other refined oil product prices worldwide. They reduce Russia’s ability to turn oil into refined products so with less domestic refining capacity, Russia exports more of its crude oil which actually pushes global prices down.

The article itself:
Why Ukraine Should Keep Striking Russian Oil Refineries

Are you saying that Ukraine is conducting the war in order to influence the United States elections ?

I see no Share option for this NYTimes article so hopefully everyone can view it. This shows graphically what the murdering dictator has done to Ukraine in his insane "Special Military Operation".

What Ukraine lost

We analyzed every building across Ukraine that has been damaged or destroyed since Russia attacked two years ago.

Global crude oil prices are manipulated by the few countries with huge production of petroleum and much less demand and less refining capacity. This includes the US where oil companies have reduced refining capacity and worse, concentrated it in areas where climate events can shut it down for short periods, thus creating short term supply shortages spiking prices. Destroying refining capacity in Russia leaves Russia with excess crude which they need to dump on the global market via third parties which should drive down crude prices, but the Saudis and the rest of OPEC will cut production to absorb it. They've had decades to perfect manipulating crude and refined oil prices during short term demand/supply issues. If Ukraine keeps attriting Russia's refining capacity for months then maybe the cartel will break down and prices will drop for more than a few days. COVID causing a worldwide drop in crude oil use starting in early 2020 lead to a lasting drop that took months to bring the prices back up.

Oil producers led by Saudis extended supply cuts amid slack prices

It is Russia who is conducting the war, a menace with a long and pernicious history of interference directly and indirectly on many other nations' politics. Ukraine is fighting back to maintain their existence.

This was the strategy of OPEC+ which had production cuts in place for a good while before Ukraine starting hitting Russian oil refineries. Russia may have been crying to OPEC+ for relief as just two days ago OPEC+ relented when they announced the phase out of a large portion of their cuts.

A bunch of news outlets wrote largely inaccurate headlines, like ABC in the article linked. The ABC article itself notes "another 2.2 million barrels a day in voluntary cuts, due to expire at the end of this month, were extended until September but would then be gradually reduced month by month until they are eliminated by September 2025." That is a big part of why oil prices dropped substantially since this weekend.

OPEC Plans a Gradual Unwinding of Production Cuts:

I feel fairly certain Ukraine is conducting the war in order to, you know, drive the raping, torturing, killing, dam-busting and city-destroying invaders from their land so they do not again become a vassal state to that fine global citizen Russia, a.k.a. the prison of nations.
But perhaps indeed, they just want to see a Kennedy in office again in the US. You can never really tell!!!

Putin and team upset red lines keep getting crossed.
Quote:
World leaders — particularly those in America — continue to cross red lines, thinking Russia will not respond. This is a foolish strategy as one miscalculation could lead to a global conflict with fatal consequences for all. This was even stressed in the simplest terms by Pres. Putin recently, but these comments were still ignored.

Now I don't remember who said it, but this is just more of the usual Empty Threats. The Russian Dictator knows that his occupying forces in Ukraine will be Completely Wiped Out if he enters into a conflict with NATO. Therefore the Dictator is doing absolutely everything to avoid getting into a conflict with NATO. So again – just more of the same Empty Threats that we have heard from the beginning. And unfortunately it is working. The west has been dragging it's feet from the beginning when it comes to Soviet era Fighter jets, Western tanks, HIMARS, Patriots, Western long range precision missiles (ATACMS) and Western 4th gen Fighter Jets. And the West are still dragging it's feet and not supplying TAURUS and not letting UKR strike the 'the Russian mainland' with ATACMS. And the US has only given UKR permission to use HIMARS around Kharkiv.

EDIT: Embedding the tweet caused the pic to get cropped for some reason. Kind of ruins the comedic effect... Oh well...

in 2022 who would have thought this would happen...
no really?

Those are fine on good paved roads, but they would be more trouble then they're worth on damaged roads, dirt roads, or off road. A gopher hole can defeat one.
