Spare Tire

That is not a parcel shelf, it's a cargo cover and was not designed to carry things on top of it, let alone the weight of a spare tire. But hey, it's your cargo cover to break. And even if you made a stronger one to replace it, it wouldn't be secured to the car, which in turn would cause the spare tire to flop around. And in a roll over accident that flopping tire could cause enough force to break free from the tether.

Look, I think it's great that this community has come up will a lot of solutions to be able to carry a spare tire. But, Tesla and the entire auto industry really needs to bring back spare tires, at least as an option with a dedicated secure place for the tire. At least until that Michelin airless tire hits the market.

Funny, it actually is a parcel shelf b/c Tesla literally calls it a Parcel Shelf in the item description. Please click on the attached photo. It also functions as a cargo cover, or privacy cover, but is commonly and officially called a parcel shelf.

I would never place anything in the hatch area higher than the rear seat back. Never. Strong braking turns anything there (umbrella, sleeping small dog, even a box of tissues) into a projectile.
Stupid crazy for Tesla to call it a “parcel shelf.”

otherwise it’s on the floor behind the back seats and tethered there.

It really would be nice if Tesla actually had tether points in the back cargo area, if not for a spare tire then for items like luggage. Stuff should be secured when being transported. It would probably cost Tesla under a $1 and they could increase the cost of the car $10, and it wouldn't be a big deal.
