Suggestions for a Toronto-Montreal-Quebec City-PEI (and back) road trip?

There is no doubt Whale-watching off PEI and I can't answer for that, but if you'd like to see Belugas as well as other species, the St-Lawrence river and the Saguenay fjord are the only places you can go South of the Artic circle.

1) Quick version : Take a cruise from Riviere-du-Loup.

Advantages: Near Supercharger, less than a 10 km detour from the most direct route to PEI. With their sonar and experience, the boats have a high success rate of finding Fin and Humpback whales. You will also see the odd Minke and Beluga whale. If you're lucky, a blue whale will be in the area.

Disadvantages: RDL is a bit farther from where most of the whales congregate than the North-shore towns that also offer cruises (Baie-Ste-Catherine, Tadoussac, Les Escoumins.) So, the boat will probably spend more time in transit and less time near whales. Also. the cruises are $$$.

2) Long version. Plan to spend a least a night in the Tadoussac area.

Leave Quebec City early in the Morning. Have an early lunch at the hotel Petit Manoir du Casino in La Malbaie while the car tops up on the 19 kW (80A, 240V) wall connector. Arrive in Tadoussac and in the afternoon visit the Quebec provincial park (SEPAQ) of the Fjord. Sector Baie Ste-Marguerite about 25 km North of Tadoussac. There's a 6 km round-trip hike leading to an observation point where you'il see a pod of Belugas about 60% of the time. You can extend to a 10 km hike if you'd like to see more of the Fjord. (Always a great view, unless there's bad weather). $8.75 per adult. Under 18 free.

In the evening, take the 1 km trail around the cape in Tadoussac. You will usually see one or two minke whales feeding close offshore. Sometimes seals and Belugas as well. There is a solitary 7.2 kW charging station in Tadoussac.

The following morning, take the 25 km drive to the small Federal park (free for 2017) at Cap-du-bon-desir. There's a small interpretation center and a 500m trail leading to a rocky area where you can often see whales offshore. Binoculars are recommended for the chance to observe the larger species, but the minke whales come close enough to see with the naked eye.

Advantages: Optimum whale-watching. The above activities are low-cost.

Disadvantage: Travel time. Quebec route 138 is single-lane and can get congested in the Summer. Getting back on route to PEI is tricky since reservations for the ferry are recommended. St-Simeon to RDL is $19 per adult, but no extra charge for electric cars for Quebec residents. Unfortunately they will probably charge $49 for an Ontario EV. The way the law is written only cars with green EV plates issued by QC are exempt. However, it's possible, but no guarantee, that the clerk will accept a green Ontario tag.

My family did a big Canada trip last August starting in Maryland, through New York, Niagra Falls ON, Montreal, and Quebec City, returning through Vermont.

In Montreal we stayed in Longueuil on the East side of the river at Hotel Le Dauphin which has a couple of nice destination chargers. I liked the hotel quite a lot and we had dinner a few nights in local restaurants in Longueuil which didn't seem to get a lot of tourists, but the food was excellent. We took the ferry (just ourselves, not the car but you can do that too) across to visit Montreal each day. My favorite thing there was the botanical gardens which are amazing.

In Quebec City we stayed at the Best Western City Center which offered electric car charging free with the Valet parking. The hotel doesn't really advertise the charger but I found it on plug share. You have to make sure the Valet has access to the J1772 adapter for them to charge it. The hotel was pretty decent for the price but it doesn't have the best location. When we checked in they told us about a free acrobatics/circus show down town which was a really fun surprise for us, but I imagine that was a limited thing last year.

Our total trip was just over 2,000 miles in an S 70D we had no car problems at all on the the trip which was our first Tesla road trip. Besides the destination charging, we did everything else on superchargers but then we didn't travel out to Nova Scotia. Probably more planning will be needed to do that comfortably.

Thanks all!

I was doing some planning and was initially thinking of something like shown on this map (was gathering data):

Toronto-Quebec-PEI trip (public)

Still not 100% set on this but getting there. Presently the plan is to skip the whales on the way from Quebec City towards PEI and use that "attraction" on the way back. Was also thinking of visiting Foresta Lumina ... I really need to divide that drive back somehow to keep the kids happy. As for the sleeping arrangements the thinking was:
  1. Montreal (few days there),
  2. Quebec City (few days there),
  3. Either Sainte Anne des Monts or Gaspe, then go hiking (either Gaspesie or Forillon)
  4. Then drive all the way to Bouctouche ... there is a Dune View Inn there with an 80A HPWC (I have dual chargers), sleep there
  5. PEI few days Charlottetown is a must, potentially stay at other locations.
  6. St John, NB
  7. Riviere du Loup (whales)
  8. Coaticook (Foresta Lumina)
  9. Back home.

If you're still looking for accommodations in PEI, please PM me. They've taken the listing down for the moment. And/or I can help find alternate arrangements.

I seem to need help finding something in Charlottetown. I will arrive near empty and need to charge overnight for roadtrips around PEI and, at the end, before I leave. Right now I can see:

  1. Most reliable charger seems to be over at Stratford: Sheppard Drive Parking/Charging | Stratford, PE | Electric Car Charging Station | PlugShare

  2. Inn on the Harbour does not have the charging station any more: Inn on the Harbour | Charlottetown, PE | Electric Car Charging Station | PlugShare

  3. Delta has a Sun Country 90A, but not sure if it is restricted to guests only: Delta Prince Edward | Charlottetown, PE | Electric Car Charging Station | PlugShare

  4. There is this on Plugshare but no info as to how to contact them: (Vacation Rental) 16 Westview Dr, Charlottetown PE C1A 3A3, Canada | Charlottetown, PE | Electric Car Charging Station | PlugShare (16 Westview Dr)

  5. Nissan: Clarke Nissan | Charlottetown, PE | Electric Car Charging Station | PlugShare

  6. There is some efficiencyPEI: efficiencyPEI EV Charger | Charlottetown, PE | Electric Car Charging Station | PlugShare

As for the places to sleep all I found available for the dates (in late Aug 11 late, out Aug 15):

  1. In/around downtown:
    1. Aloha B&B (no charging near visible in Plugshare)
    2. Charlottetown Inn (bad reviews, no charging near visible in Plugshare)
    3. Delta (Sun Country 90A, but wasn't exactly planning to spend that much $ on PEI)
  2. Few km away from downtown grouped together, in between L2 charging spots (4) and (5) noted above
    1. Rodd Royalty
    2. Comfort Inn
    3. Banbridge Inn
    4. Holiday Inn Express

1. The Stratford charger is good and is generally available. It's not close to anything, unfortunately.
2. You should call the Inn on the Harbour. They may reinstall their station if somebody needs it.
3. Delta's is a free for all. No need to be a guest, though I would yield to any guest who wanted it over me.
4. I can DM you the email address for 16 Westview
5. This is far from everything and an option of last resort, IMO
6. Efficiency PEI's charger may be used by their Volt, though I have the a direct contact that could probably unplug it for you.

On our Ontario - PEI trips, we like driving one direction through Maine and the other through Canada.

When driving through Maine, the drive between the Magog to either the Augusta or Brewer super chargers has worked well. We have enjoyed two-night stops in: the St. Andrews area for a day of whale watching from Grand Manan (walk on ferry at Black's Harbour, Rossmount Inn is a great stop to stay with destination charging); and on Mount Desert Island for day hikes in Acadia National Park (Seawall Motel).

When driving through Canada, we have done well returning from PEI with a one-night stay in old Quebec (leave PEI in morning, take ferry from Levis around 4pm); leaving Quebec City mid-afternoon the following day after getting tired from walking around, with dinner in Montreal. The New Brunswick Chademo network should make this one-day drive through New Brunswick possible in a BEV, last summer in our Model S we went through Maine in both directions.

The Montmorency Falls are a popular stop in Quebec City. Unfortunately, parking is $12 if you arrive approximately between one hour before the gondola and other optional services open and a half hour before they close. (Hours vary by season. For example, always closed in the Winter). However, there are plenty of sidestreets where you can park for free in exchange for a 5-minute walk. If you're not interested in taking the gondola, it can be even closer to the foot bridge over the Falls to street park towards the top of the attached map.

With Summer/Autumn visitors I park onsite when it's free in the evening, or use a sidestreet. The maps is for the top of the falls. No convenient always free parking near the lower Falls, but you can take the stairs down. On hot Summer days, children enjoy taking the fork in the stairs which will get them drenched under the Falls' mist.

An update Re CHAdeMO adapter....

FLO sent me an email:

Hello ...,

Just a word to inform you that our engineers had to do a lot of reverse engineering with regard to this issue but we believe the solution has been found.

The fix was applied to a few 1st generation AddÉnergie DCFC’s last week for testing purposes and it has passed the tests.

We updated the firmware on the Markham station yesterday. You should now be able to charge successfully at this location.

I tested this with my adapter and it worked. I also passed this on to Tesla.

@sule, hope I'm not derailing your thread by offering a destination suggestion. :)

Ile de la Madeleine. You'll have to take one or maybe two ferry rides to get there. You can bring your car along. I don't want to say too much about it; you can find out plenty on the web; let's not draw attention to it. :) I spent a week there with wife and kids, after we'd already been in PEI.

Please let us know of your actual experiences -- I made my last trip up to the PEI region a couple of years ago in a Prius, which killed me, as I already owned a Tesla at that point. But couldn't convince myself that charging wouldn't be a royal pain in the ass. Now I see many more relatively quick charging options, so hoping that you'll have a wonderful trip and will report back accordingly.

Good luck,
Alan

So which park did you choose? I don't think you can go wrong with either, though I only know le Parc de la Gaspesie.

I went to Gaspesie. It was great but our hopes of seeing a moose were not met with an actual sighting. Didn't expect so much gravel roads and climbs but Tesla did it... and gained 5 km on the way down :)

@sule, hope I'm not derailing your thread by offering a destination suggestion. :)

Ile de la Madeleine...

Well, yes, I knew about that but my wife didn't have enough days off left, she had a tough year.

We are in PEI now, staying in Summerside, leaving the day after tomorrow... Summerside is serving as a good charging base in the middle of the island, near the bridge. It is better covered by chargers than Charlottetown and we were able to "zoom" to many places so far (the island not being that large also helps).

Beautiful so far. My kids want to go back to Brackley beach tomorrow and we wanted to go to West Point... will probably do both.
