Taptes Wireless Charger Not Working After 2019.8.3

E-mail from the Jeda team today:

We have discovered that many of you have experienced problems with the front USB ports of your Tesla Model 3 and the Jeda Wireless Pad after updating your software to the version 2019.8.1 or above.

Our team has conducted extensive testing using the Jeda Wireless Pad and many other accessories that use USB cables. What we have seen is that when those accessories make use of the data wires inside a USB cable, the Tesla Model 3 resets or interrupts the power connection. This happens with many wireless chargers, battery packs and other car accessories.

We haven't received an official response from Tesla to know if this may be a software issue or if the new software limits the front USBs to power only for non-storage connections.

One way or another, the solution is to replace the existing USB cable for a pair of USB cables that are charging only, which means they don't use the data wires. The Jeda Wireless Pad is the only wireless charger that usesindependent USB cables, meaning that to fix this issue, you just need to replace the cables. The Jeda Wireless Pad will charge as fast as it always did and won't lose any power.

All units that haven't been delivered yet will come with the proper charger only cables. So If you are a V1 customer and are planning on upgrading your Jeda Wireless Pad to our 2nd gen during our Member Upgrade you don't need to worry about this. But if you already have your Jeda Wireless Pad and are experiencing this issue, the following are good and fast solutions to fix this issue. (Member Upgrade Program coming in April)

2ft USB cable from Mycablemart.com. Buy now $0.75

3ft USB cable from Mycablemart.com. Buy now $1

Portapower Charge Only Usb Cable from Amazon Buy now $12

Portapower Data Blocker USB connector from Amazon Buy now for $12 (not tested)

Some customers have also reported to us that using a USB hub or USB splitter fixes this issue. Although we can not guarantee that any USB splitter or USB hub will help, it is likely that the data connection is interrupted by those intermediate devices, delivering power only to the Jeda Wireless Pad.

Installed my Taptes pad today with a USB hub. Charging works, but I get a "Charging Slowly" message on the phone. Are all of you getting this as well?

As a follow up to this, I'm getting about 1% charge every 10 minutes. That would be almost 17 hours for a full charge. For comparison, I have another wireless charger on my desk at work that also gives the "Charging Slowly" message, but still charges about 3x faster at 3% every 10 minutes.

I'm going to try hooking the Taptes pad up to a 12v socket adapter instead of the USB ports/hub and see if that makes a difference. If not, I'm going to try to return this pad and get a different one, the charge rate is so slow it's basically useless.

If it works I may try to find a way to either add a new 12v socket in the front console or run an extension from the rear console to the front.

Mine started not charging after an update. I was able to fix it by opening the unit and simply cutting the non-power supply wires. You can easily open the unit by removing 8 screws on the back. After cutting the non-power supply wires, it's working great (I actually de-soldered them from the board in case I wanted to put them back, but cutting should work fine)

As a follow up to my last follow up, I must have had the phone sitting on the pad wrong, or the phone was using a ton of power for something else. I gained about 10% charge on my 25 minute trip to work this morning using the USB hub to one of the front USB ports. That charge rate is plenty to keep me happy.

How do people not already have a splitter or USB Hub if they are using a wireless charger and dashcam? You need three ports. I originally had taptes connected to Tesla USB on driver side and taptes and USB for dashcam plugged into my USB hub on passenger side. It quite working on the driver's side, so I simply plugged both taptes into the USB hub and move the USB for dashcam to the Tesla USB. Both sided work fine now.

I agree that many will already have a USB hub/splitter for the Dashcam. But your solution of plugging both sides into the same USB hub would result in both sides sharing power from the same 5V 2Amp(?) power source.

Most people including myself will need at least one splitter to isolate the data on the non-dashcam side. But you will want to feed both sides of the Taptes from different USB ports from the car to ensure full charging speeds for both sides.

There is a reason the these charging pads come with two separate USB plugs instead of just one.

Just wanted to put this out there so nobody inadvertently loses charging speed.

I contacted The customer service and got this reply. Great customer service and product!

Hi Steve,

Thanks for shopping with TapTes. This is Tina. Hope you're having a great day!

There is a known issue about Tesla 2019.8.2 and above that, there are issues with front USB ports, which may cause TapTes and other wireless chargers blinking or not working. But the Tesla rear passenger USB ports still works fine as the power source for TapTes wireless charger. You may try adding USB splitter or hub (almost all Telsa owners have solved their issues).

If you don't mind waiting for 3 weeks, we can arrange two free USB splitters with free international shipping for you. If you could purchase anything from TapTes.com, that will be greatly appreciated as that would help us save a little on international shipping.

By the way, Tesla software engineer has contacted us and they have resolved the issue temporally in the latest software. We are still working with them to find the root cause. Steve, if you mind waiting the USB splitters for three weeks, I'll notify you when the problem is solved and does not happen again.

Best Regards,
Tina

I will be buying more from this company!

My Tapes wireless charger works on the right side, but the left one doesn't charge. It flashes red for a second, the phone sees the charge starting, then the red light turns off and on again, repeating about once per second. I tried swapping cables (power only) without success.

I've emailed Tapes at their sales@ address three times and they aren't responding. I'll give them another week before I post a video on youtube of it.

I got the same email, basically saying I would have to wait for 3 weeks and that Tesla is aware of the problem. I might try the above-posted fix of removing the white wires.

I verified that my left taptes charger doesn't work when plugged into a usb hub (on a PC). It either doesn't register the phone position properly (flashing red light) or charges the phone and then immediately halts charging, and then repeats this over and over again.

The right side doesn't have any issues.

I emailed sales@ multiple times without a reply.

I also tried calling their phone number listed on their about page, and its disconnected.

With no alternative, I asked for a paypal dispute case for a refund. I would have preferred a working charger.

Opened up the Taptes wireless charger and ... the black wire on the left charger (which is not functioning) looks like it completely missed the connection point.

The red wire looks like it's barely connected. I could do a better job soldering blindfolded better than this.
