The First American Gigafactory Probably Won’t Be from Tesla

t Be from Tesla Navigant Research

Looks like LG Chem's Michigan factory may beat Tesla to the 1 Gigawatt mark.
"Meanwhile, near the shore of Lake Michigan, an LG Chem factory is poised to be the first North American facility to produce more than 1 GWh of automotive Li-ion cells, likely before the end of 2016."

They never were supposed to be. Both LG/GM's Holland plant and Nissan's Smyrna plant were supposed to be just over 1 Gigawatt at max capacity. They just hadn't gotten to full nameplate capacity due to a lack of demand.

Of course, trumpeting 1.5 or even 2 GWh of capacity is nothing when Tesla's Gigafactory is talking about 35 GWh at full nameplate. We'll see when Holland brings the 4th line online.

I think the first phase of the gigafactory comes on line in spring. It should be able to hit one GW.

1 GWh is about 11,000 90KWh battery packs for Model S and X. That's only about 1/5 of Tesla's annual car production.

The race to 1 GWh might be won by LG Chem, but Tesla will almost certainly win the race to 2 GWh and probably before the end of 2016.

Wow, this thread has really gotten off topic. The last significant comments or questions regarding the actual Gigafactory are on page 71. Pages 71-77 are all conjecture regarding batteries. Maybe they could be sawed off and given their own thread so that any meaningful updates or comments about the Gigafactory can be more easily referenced?
 Agreed.
Like where's the latest on site photos?

I remember similar news earlier this year about an increase in size of GF. Is this new news or did electrec not remember this?

Hi, Fred from Electrek here. Earlier this summer we reported on officials from the Story County Commission saying that the factory could be twice as big as originally planned, but the latest information is from a Tesla exec rather than Nevada officials and with a "precise" number this time of 13.6 million sq-ft.

Ah, great :). Thanks for clarifiying. Its hard to keep track of everything and many news outlets recycle news or don´t know there stuff. Good to know that´s not the case here.

Looks like Elon mentioned something like that in Q1/15 ER too:

So to be clear, is it suggested that this extra floor space is above and beyond the space added by the mezzanine level?
