Seems to me that running away would be very ineffective if the owner was driving. Stolen?

Accident occurred in Pasadena, same city the car is registered in, according to Carfax. Very easy for police to check whether driver was the owner.

(or wanted to pretend it was stolen --- but due to other corroborating effects, this could probably be ascertained as well)

This is the troubling part (besides, of course, for the main victim, the motorcycle driver). To me, it would seem better to leave the keys in one's pocket. Perhaps the driver left their purse in the car. Perhaps the driver was mugged and the keys were stolen. Perhaps the driver knew the thief but did not suspect the key theft nor the car theft to happen.

The driver, whoever it was, will most likely be found based on fingerprints and DNA. The Tesla looked pretty destroyed, so it's quite unlikely no evidence was left behind. If they're lucky they might even find something like a phone somewhere inside the car or at the scene of the accident.

I know it's meant to be tongue-in-cheek but, alas, the appearance of such a ludicrous headline isn't so far-fetched given the sensationalist stories of late that mention Autopilot in the same breath whenever a Tesla is involved in a mishap.

I wanted to laugh but couldn't quite do it in respect for the supposed victim.

Not unheard of if you are drunk driving to flee the scene and report the car stolen, or act surprised when your car is gone.

It's sort of a compliment. If you put Ferrari in the headline it fits. People will wonder if it's a celebrity.

Sort of like when Jenner proved he/she (not sure which gender at time) could not drive safely with a trailer and killed that woman on PCH. Big story, but not a big story. He/she got away with it.

Prediction, if it was the owner, and they were rich, powerful, or a celebrity, they will get nothing more than a slap on the wrist at best. Killing motorcyclists is an understandable faux pas in the US.

The thief totaled the Tesla and three other cars as well as killing a motorcycle driver. The car was going 100 mph at the time of the accident. The thief jumped out of the car and ran and is still on the loose. Very sad.
