Blog Tesla to Offer Subscription for Full Self-Driving

Tesla is planning a monthly subscription offering for its Full Self-Driving option, Chief Executive Elon Musk said in a tweet.

Tesla released the FSD beta this week to drivers it has identified as cautious. The company will continue to deploy the software to more drivers in coming weeks.

The price of FSD has steadily climbed even ahead of its availability. Musk announced on Twitter that the price of the company’s Full Self-Driving package will increase by $2,000 on Monday to $10,000. The price hike applies to both new vehicles and upgrades to cars customers already own.

Musk then updated the timeline on Thursday, tweeting that the price change will go into effect October 29. He said the change only applies to the U.S. for now and that a “one week clock will start in other countries as beta is released.”

A subscription service would be an interesting offering for Tesla owners, giving them the flexibility to pay for FSD when it makes sense in relation to their travel habits. FSD may not be necessary for your daily commute, but it might be nice for the summer road trip.

Musk didn’t offer any details about terms or pricing of an FSD subscription, only that it will be offered in 2021.

Neh, this wasn't a FOMO based, Full Sales Driving, push. If it was, there would be a bit more time for the word to get around, and there would be no mention of perceivably cheaper option of per-per-use mode coming. This was just marketing tweet to catch some headlines about the FSD Beta being out. It might motivate few people who happen to be ordering a new car before Monday, but generally anyone who hasn't paid $8,000 for FSD is not going to jump on it because it might go up 25% - those are mostly "show me working FSD first" people (like myself), they will wait until they can summon a Tesla at least anywhere within battery range without need for supervision, some perhaps are even waiting for the robo taxis Elon promised by the end of this year which will make money for the owners who let their cars drive for the Tesla Ride Sharing Network (a Tesla driverless Uber).

1) Consumer use only (lowest tier)
2) Mixed consumer and robotaxi (mid tier)
3) Commercial use (highest tier)

Seriously - If somebody pays $10,000 only to find their car does not have the hardware to support true FSD, I can foresee a lot of really angry customers.

I've argued in other threads that the price of this will need to be cheap, like $20/mo cheap, for it to be widely adopted. And that by making it that cheap Tesla could actually make more money than they are selling if for thousands of dollars up front. But many people, especially those who have paid those thousands of dollars, seem to disagree with me and insist that it'll have to cost $100+ per month. All I can say is that if it is $100+/mo I'll pass. And I'm betting a LOT of others will as well.

I'll pass too, but would get one month here and there if I'm doing a big road trip for example. At 20$/month I would probably keep it all year round. So 2x 100$ each year, or 12x 20$ each year, which is best for Tesla? But that based on one person (me), they probable have (need) more data than this to make their decision

Uber is about $1.50 a mile. Personally I think they should go with an hourly rate of $10. I'd be happy to pay that for the car to drive me around. If they want me to beta test software while I monitor it they're going to have to pay me at least $10 an hour.

@ $20 a month that would be a 500 month payback at the current price. Not gonna happen

Tesla is arguably immune from the Osborne effect, aside from those small amount of enthusiasts like you and I, the masses don’t know a new battery is coming out or much else for that matter.

I had hardware upgrade for free since I did pay for FSD when I bought my S in 2017, I would think the same as we go. I love the new upgrade, whats neat is I am 6 foot 3 and have always had to bend over to see lights, now it tells me when they turn green and it show the red turning green on my dash. I dont need to bend over anymore.

The best solution for this, outside of FSD, is getting a Model X with its huge windshield, LIFE changing!
It makes every other car (even Model S) feel like a horse with blinders on.

This company has not done 10 years of research and development on such a huge Neural Network to sell the product at $20 per month. They were not making profits but doing investment on R&D to see these days.

I think FSD would be at minimum, priced around $100 each month. Even for that price, the FSD Package will be equal to 8.5 years of subscription. There might be a day that the price lower or the product would be offered as a package for a cheaper price and I believe other companies (e.g. Lucid, Mercedes etc.) will offer the product for free to win the competition but wether people like it or not, Tesla's Technology is advanced a lot and this product is currently priced right for 8k to 10k.
I know it hurts and it was a price of a used car that I spent to upgrade the package, but I think in long run, there would be a day that I say 8k was a bargain price... Or even, Tesla stop selling the package and fully switch to subscription. (Like a lot of free products that disappeared - Superchargers, Premium Connectivity etc.)
