Tire chains should be on the front, not the rear...

Same reason tire shops recommend the newer tires on the rear.

I've never really bought into that. If I lost control going round a bend I'd rather have some form of directional control rather than the back staying in the back and the front saying in the front, but not having any say in where the front it going,

Funny story (OT): my oldest son and his band were touring in the winter in Colorado a few years ago, and had to go through a mountain pass to get to their next gig. They had their Dodge tour van, and it was snowing fairly heavily, to the point where tire chains were strongly recommended... Of course, being raised driving mostly FWD cars, they put the chains on what they assumed were the drive wheels - the front! Needless to say, that didn't work particularly well for them and they soon realized their mistake....
