Tire selection for Model X

Not sure what tire shops are around you, but, if you have an Americas/Discount Tire, the 275 option is validated as an all around... They don't force you to go staggered...

I went with 275/45r20 all around last month so I can do rotations... My factory OEMs lasted just under 13k miles... The outsides of the fronts were completely worn to the ply (the metal "threads" were visible all around the "no repair if you're punctured" zone), and they probably 2/32 all across... The rears were still maybe 4 or 5/32.
Are you sure that you are solving the source of the problem? It does not sound like it. I get 30k-35k miles on the OEM tires on my previous X P90D and my current X 100D. They all wear evenly.

Not at all - I am more than likely going to need to get the alignment done to make sure there isn't a real big problem (or control my cornering speeds)... But, they technically did wear symmetrically, haha... The fronts both wore out on the outsides and down to the low tread, the rears wore out evenly across the surface...

So were those factory OEMs Continentals??
Yup, factory tires were new when the vehicle was purchased in 2019...

I had stopped at one America's tire near my work, but, when I did the order online (so I could review more choices for tires/wheels without being near a stranger), I picked the location near my house... Both had no issues with Tesla and mentioned how many Xs they had seen coming in with the early wear...

13,000 miles on a new tire is highway robbery, but I can believe it on a Continental tire. I had blowouts at half wear on one Continental each on each of my new Model Xs. A blowout at 75 is a bit of a challenge. I agree with my tire supplier that Continental is the "most expensive poor quality tire you can buy".
Buyer Beware. Can't wait to get the Continentals off of my Model Y (I am sure it will be soon. I am at 12,000 miles).

I replaced the first Continentals with Pirellis and they went 48,000 miles. The Hankook tires I put on the second Model X gave me an extremely comfortable ride with great handling at a very reasonable price.

This may sound weird, but when you take delivery of your vehicle, check the tread depth. I am convinced that Continental makes an OEM tire specifically for new cars with less tread, ergo 13,000 miles wear. Isn't it nice to know that your car comes with introductory tires, just like your printer which comes with an introductory cartridge with a limited amount of ink?

Sounds more like an alignment problem.

Yeah, and I'm thinking it probably happened after my shudder repair occurred... Prior to that, the tire wear seemed to have been even. Not sure if something had been done or set back in correctly or adjust when they replaced the components for that. Of course, it could still be my fast cornering, but, the tires were symmetrically worn in the fronts (mirror images) and the rears were evenly worn.

I do have an appointment on the 8th for some issues (including wheel alignment) - just not sure if they're going to have an issue now that I put aftermarket wheels on.

You first need a wheel alignment, then replace the fronts with 265s. If you have a good alignment, you will never need to rotate the tires. Tire rotation is a cover up for poor alignments, and not really possible with staggered tires.

Wheel alignment is part of the half shaft replacement (shudder repair). But I don’t know what effect the after market wheels might have on their ability to perform that step. Tesla seems to take a dim view of non-Tesla anything on the car. Check the invoice for the shudder repair, to see if there are any relevant comments.

Get two new fronts. Have backs rotated side to side. Look into Hankook replacements. They are excellent tires at a fraction of the cost.
Great ride, great handling, last forever and sticky (I ran them at PBIR and beat the Lambo Urus, setting the world record with the Raven.
Love my Hankooks.
 
I don’t know how people are getting 20-35k miles out of their tires. I got an alignment before replacing my tires last. It helped, but my first rear tires (Michelins) w/o alignment lasted 8k miles. Replaced all with Continental (cross contact lx) after the alignment and squeezed about 12k miles. Need the rears replaced again.

Buy anything but Continental. Worst tire for the highest prices. Blowouts as well.

Got 41k miles on Pirelli All Season. Hankook is also great for cheap.

Our 2017 X100D has the OEM 'Continental cross contact lx sport' with 38K on them. I also had them on a 2016 P90DL Sig and had over 36K before deer incident.
I'm replacing them this Fall before winter. They are 4 to 5/32nd still (pict below)

I looked at many threads on this topic. Caution that some other tires will increase the Wh/Mile efficiency. As good as luck in weather, ride, and efficiency as I've had with the OEM on 2 Xs, I've come to the conclusion I'm going to get them again.

FYI, I replaced my OEM tires with the below on 24-May-2022 before a 6700 roadtrip. I am impressed with ever aspect of them. The Wh/Mile appears to even be better.
