Not sure if anyone caught the announcement from Toyota:

Toyota, Microsoft Partner to Develop Car Tech That Drivers Want

with a partnership with Microsoft to accumulate and commoditize the data acquired from their vehicles. Makes you think about exactly how much data Tesla actually has given the size of the fleet, number of miles driven, and the depth and breadth of data TM actually collects. Certainly it gives TM advantages in design and engineering. Don't know if TM has plans to commercialize the data, but it does give one some pause. Toyota has a long way to go to to get enough vehicles out there with the extensive telematics and bidirectional communication that TM has. Another area where TM is far ahead of the field.

Tesla has sold ~110,000 cars. Toyota sells ~190,000 cars per week.

If Toyota gets serious about data collection they'll surpass Tesla data very quickly, even if only a few of the new models are outfitted properly.

But you have to think Tesla has established a whole new paradigm in the automobile industry, Again!
