Trading in to Tesla

Does anyone know how the process works? My sales adviser isn't really helpful on this.

I got an offer for my trade in and I just ignored it for now since I'm not sure if I want to accept that price. Does this affect my delivery? There are people who got their VINs for their model X even though they ordered after me (although diff spec so not sure if that's the reason).

Also, if I choose to decline now, can I accept at delivery? Or vice versa, if I accept now, can I decline later? Also, will they adjust the price or just give me the price they said even though they didn't look over my car.

Just for fun I filled out the Trade-in form for my Model S. I got a trade-in value for the car and it said it was valid for 30 days. Within the 30 day period, I decided to lease a Model X. After configuring the car, I got an email notification to complete my purchase. Magically, my trade-in vehicle was listed there, along with its trade-in value. I declined using it as part of the lease financing. So, in short, you can decline the trade-in at the time you fill out the online finance form (where it asks you which way you want to pay for the vehicle).

It's easier to Decline/Remove it than add, so if not sure, add it. I'm sure you can add it, given enough time, but you may have to get sales person to do it.

I don't think it should impact delivery. Took my X from Order to Delivery about 3 weeks with a trade. And it was built 10 days before Delivery.

Go to a Tesla Store or SC and get the trade in added if you already have an order.

Also get an offer from Carmax. Tesla will match Carmax if their quoted price is less.

I think they won’t match CarMax on Tesla’s.
CarMax is pretty bad on Tesla’s any way.

I assumed the trade-in was not a Tesla. I just traded in a Prius to Tesla, and Car Max beat Tesla’s offer by $1,000. Tesla matched it, no questions asked. It was actually the O/A I was working with that suggested it. But I get that is not likely the case if I was trading in a Tesla.

Did you accept or decline Tesla's offer online or did you bring this up during delivery?

The Owner/Advisor suggested it to me. The Delivery Specialist knew I had a non-Tesla trade-in and just had me upload a scanned copy of the CarMax quote along with the other required documents, after which they adjusted trade-in amount. I paid the difference using the ACH transfer online on tesla.com. The transaction was very smooth, like they do it all the time. A week later, I had all the final paperwork in hand, and went to the BMV and got my plate attached to the new car. Easy peasy.

I traded in our Honda Odyssey, if you like the price they give you, when you pick up your Telsa just drive the car your trading in... Pretty straight forward...

I just did this beginning of the month.

Filled out the form, got a price and quote for 30 days. When i was in, my advisor told me if I went to carmax and got the quote from them and it was more they would match it. Gave me about $900 more. I emailed them a picture of the carmax quote to the delivery team, they updated the price, that was it.

My harder part was self financing. I was literally at the credit union to pick up the check and then they said they only do 89% on Tesla's, which was weird and not my experience ever with other cars financed through dealer with that same place. Scrambled a bit but found another credit union that didn't even blink and gave me a better rate so win for me? but it took a very very long week where I was worried I'd lost my $2500 deposit.

The only discomfort at all, was PAYing for the new car before laying eyes on it (that is the way ACH transfer works). But I could have rejected the car at the last second and gotten my money back. But the new car was perfect in every way, So it was a quick trip in and out. I did have to go back the next day to retrieve my wife prescription sunglasses. Did not think to look in the sunglass holder in the ceiling.

Did they inspect your car at all or did they just take your car for what they offered you? I'm really questioning this especially since my car has check engine light that I might not fix.

we traded in a 3 yo MB S550 w/28,000 mi. They said they will match carmax...Their numbers were better than carmax & they had the cmx quote. They were really pretty casual about the inspection of our car when we turned it in..(it was in perfect condition.) they told us they haven't seen a S550 in a yr turned in. They wanted the $ maybe a day b4 we took delivery..told my husband "No way till I inspect the car". That was one day later. I inspected and then I paid. The reason was everything I read on the forum was " you drive away & pay..it's your problem not Tesla's if you never noted it". I have to say whilst the info on the forum still informs me ..one must recognize majority of issues are not universally populated.
I love, love my Model X! I look at it as a computer with wheels...If you approach it from this way a software bug here/there will not drive you mad!! Good luck & enjoy

When was this? I talked to Tesla yesterday and it sounded like they don't even inspect the car anymore since I already got a written offer.
