From Tesla launches new Model 3 with ‘mid-range’ battery for $45,000, changes pricing structure

Tesla sent us the following statement about the change:

“As Model 3 production and sales continue to grow rapidly, we’ve achieved a steady volume in manufacturing capacity, allowing us to diversify our product offering to even more customers. Our new Mid-Range Battery is being introduced this week in the U.S. and Canada to better meet the varying range needs of the many customers eager to own Model 3, and our delivery estimate for customers who have ordered the Standard Battery is 4-6 months.”

There is no more RWD LR... To get LR you have to go AWD. And AWD was $6k last time we had information.

The question is: Is the mid-range battery actually a different battery, or is it software locked? My guess would be different battery as a way to ease up on the current cell shortage. (But with MR listed as delivery in 6-10 weeks, that puts it before the new cheaper battery pack was supposed to be in production.)

I would guess software locked - it's a way to keep getting revenue in from LR production until European homologation. And they may be able to sell OTA upgrades later.

I still don't understand the change. Why doesn't Tesla send a press release with the details ? They are missing out on some free publicity - and more importantly potentially reprinted positive talking points.

So, now LR is $54k, but with AWD. MR RWD is $45k.

We paid $50k for LR.

Tesla PR/Communications leaves a lot to be desired and is a big part of sentiment being too negative about the company.

It is only a 17% difference in range

Not exactly.

1) The actual measured range for the Model 3 LR RWD was 334 miles. They chose 310 miles nominal so that they could call all LRs "310 miles", including the (actually 308 mile) AWD and P variants.

2) As you reduce the pack capacity, you reduce the vehicle mass, and this provides a several percent increase in vehicle range, which means a several percent decrease in the required number of cells for a fixed range.

An EPA combined 260 miles is a more than 20% reduction in cells.

if all cars produced were the RWD MR version.

Which would be why I wrote "for weeks that they were producing only MRs"

From the article
Electrek said:
We asked Tesla about the new situation with the Model 3 battery pack options and the company confirmed to Electrek that the new pack is not a Long-Range pack with a software-locked capacity, but it has the same architecture with fewer cells.
Confirmed less cells.
