USB Dash Cam Questions

It's working fine except the video clips are all one minute long. How do I change to 10 minute clips? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Have a new SanDisc 3.0 Ultra Trek, 32gb flash drive. Thanks!
JOHN
I think that is normal for this version of the firmware. I am 39.7. They probably did it that way to keep the file sizes down. That, and it seems like the last file always gets corrupted when the car powers down while the file is still 'open'. So, you will lose up to the last minute of the rolling 60 minutes. Best to tap the icon and save 10 minutes of video (i.e. 10 files) before letting the car power down if you don't want to lose something.

I had a lot of trouble with the flash drive being corrupted when the car powered down. On the next drive the Dash Cam would display an "X" instead of the red circle to indicate recording. I was having to constantly pull the flash drive and reformat on Windows. But because I had a 128 GB flash drive, Windows would only allow NTFS or exFAT, which is not FAT32. I tried downloading Ridgecrop Consultants Ltd as a 3rd party way to format the drive as FAT32, which seemed to work, but would only last for a drive or two before the partition was unusable by the car again. I found a really detailed posting where someone created two partitions, one for music and the other for the Dash Cam, but they reduced the Dash Cam partition down to 16 GB in order to use the Windows formatter, as it seemed the 3rd party formatters were leading to frequent corruptions. In the end, I created an Ubuntu Linux virtual machine and reformatted my USB drive as VFAT (i.e. FAT32 using Linux terminology) and now it works great.

Configure your USB flash drive by formatting in the 'FAT32' (Windows) / 'MS-DOS (FAT)' (Mac) file architecture and add a base-level folder in the flash drive called 'TeslaCam'.
Insert configured USB flash drive into either of the USB ports in the front row.
When properly configured, the Dashcam icon will be displayed in the status bar with a red dot indicating that it is recording.
Note, the USB must be plugged in while driving to record.
Tap the icon to save a 10-minute video clip or press and hold to pause recording. Recordings not downloaded after an hour will be deleted. Be sure you have sufficient space on your flash drive to allow for saving (each minute of video recorded uses approximately 30 MB; the 1-hour circular buffer requires ~1.8 GB of free space).

I have an old Sandisck Ultrafit 32GB, i'm gonna test it out.

I did that, the icon was there and did record. When I went back to the car, the icon was gone. Do you know why?

I've used dash cam for a week now and no corruptions or interruptions.

I suspect one needs a high speed USB drive specifically made for video recording

I got this drive at Amazon https://amzn.to/2qrFmwj seems to work fine. I purchased a USB 3.0 hub to go with it so passengers can still charge their phone.https://amzn.to/2CZKob1

I formatted and setup the drive on my Pixelbook. It defaults to FAT32.

More money for the chip than for a low-end stand-alone dashcam system. ;)

Maybe, there is a 16GB version which is much cheaper.

Notice the name of the files. It has *front* in the filename. This is a hint to me that rear and maybe side camera views will also be stored when a future version of the dashcam comes out. A Rear view would be very handy for capturing the car rear ending you.

I bought a large capacity device with a mind to the future.

They'll probably fix the bug that's causing the corruption before they implement back or surround camera capture.

this one works just fine. Under $10.

Have you used this one enough to verify that it's not doing what "ordinary" ones do?

I got a 128GB version at Best Buy for just under $30. It worked fine for two weeks of lots of long and short drives, then did the gray x. Have had a chance to reformat or whatever is needed, but hope the new firmware will work better.

Yeah, I bought it in response to the constant glitching of my other stick, which was a 8GB from like a decade ago. I figured it had something to do with slow write times. It would glitch out every single time I got out of the car. The new stick has been flawless for a week now. I think I'm in the clear. I think any USB 3.x stick should be fine.

Also, I'm still on 39.7 firmware.

Thanks for the info.

You were right! A high speed usb cured the issue.

I've have two of these same model of USB drive and they are both constantly getting corrupted by the car. I just wanted to keep a thumb drive plugged in and forget about it until I needed it, but it's too much work constantly swapping them out and reformatting. My BlackVue, on the other hand, has been flawless.

If you still want to try USB sticks, this one is still flawless for me. 1.5 weeks of perfect operation so far.

SanDisk Ultra Fit 128GB USB 3.0 working well. Just bought ICZI USB splitter to allow passenger phone charging, and will later look into partitioning the USB so I can "have my music and eat video, too."
Wish I'd saved the video from the parking garage in NYC last weekend, who put a nice little dent in my 15-day old M3, but I didn't realize it until after it'd erased...presumably occurred while they were parking it...
Algorithm for idiot: "When Leaving Parking Garage - inspect car - press "save" on video..."
