The plugged in version doesn't drain your battery. :)

I have a friend that has the Alpine aftermarket unit and CarPlay does use battery faster than regular usage so you need to plug in for longer trips. I don't know if this is the same for OEM units with wireless CarPlay.
I prefer just using what's on the car so I don't have to worry about regulating my phone's battery.

Extremely suboptimal solution from a usability standpoint. I have to do that with audiobooks and podcasts. If Tesla would acknowledge the weakness of their media solution and give us CarPlay and Android Auto, this would all be a non-issue.
That has been a complaint about the S and X for years now. Tesla has not changed. Don’t expect them to change any time soon.

To me it’s a non-issue; I routinely listen to music and podcasts on my phone through the car. To you it’s a big issue. To Tesla it does not appear to be an issue worth addressing.
