Sold my 1997 Dodge Viper to buy the Tesla. Very Similar and very different cars. Both American to the core, gorgeous, have tremendous torque and tons of fun to drive. But luxury, tech, sound and economy couldn't be more different!!

Before that:
1973 Plymouth Fury 3
1969 Ford Mustang Fastback, 351 4 speed
1983 Buick Skyhawk T type
1986 Ford Bronco II
1993 Chevy Silverado (still driving)
1997 Dodge Viper
2013 P85
all great cars but like the Viper, P85 and Silverado are my favorites...

Just ordered a p85+ to counter the gas guzzling of my 2014 R8 V10+ and 2012 Jeep Cherokee srt8
Heres the r8

Hmm.. Trying to remember the years, could be a bit off.. But a nice thread while waiting, indeed. :)

1984- Volvo 740 (Dad's)
1991 Renault 5 (The first car of my own!)
1993 Renault 19 (the 5 was really a bit too small for comfort)
1996 Renault Megane Coupe 1.6 (the first car I really wanted as soon as I saw a picture of it, ordered one and had to wait for months!)
1999 Ford Puma 1.7 (my only company lease car... Pretty neat car, but HORRIBLE service, and it had a lot of (mostly electrical) problems)
2003 Hyundai Coupe 2.7 V6 (Really liked this one, had it for 8 years as I did not find anything better!)
2011 Hyundai Genesis Coupe 3.8 V6 (Finally found a better car! :))
2014 Tesla Model S 85 (on order, very hard to wait!)

Curiously, all my cars have been new, even my first owned car. I guess I like the new car smell. :)

Looks like I have been reasonably brand loyal as well.

Here's my current Genesis Coupe, the day I drove it home from dealer back in April 2011.

Pate
Pate, I loved my Genesis so much, it took me 7 months after getting my MS to finally sell it. Here's some pics of mine!

Oh, ouch on the crunched cars!
TR3 when learning how to drive.
....

Okay, now I'll play (though I'm blocking on some of the years):

1960 TR3(A) (my first, my baby)
Austin-Healy sprite (no, not a bugeye)
Mark I Triumph Spitfire (what a sense of accomplishment, putting this BRG puppy back together and driving)
1977 FIAT (131? ugh - what a mistake)
Toyota Cressida (used, post-lease; engine died soon after)
Toyota Corolla (damn thing wouldn't die)
Porsche 924 (drove, totalled, rebuilt, driven for a couple years after)
Subaru GL wagon (<sigh /> another rugrat meant the Porsche had to go)
1999 Subaru Forester (for She Who Must Be Obeyed)
2001 Acura TL 3.2 (for me)
2014 Subaru Forester (what can I say, She Who Must Be Obeyed likes them)
2013 Model S 85 (I had no choice... even less expensive dream cars were too expensive)

Car ownership started after grad school in the US. Growing up in India, rode less-than-100cc two-wheeler hand-me-downs from dad.

Have never owned a used car. All bought new.

1999 Volkswagen Passat
Black, 4 cyl Turbo., bought for $25k, sold in 2004 at 66k miles for $10k.
Adored this car; it was built like a tank.

2001 BMW Z3 2.5i
Silver, ragtop, bought for $37k, sold in 2005 at 36k miles for $18k.
Was a gift for my new bride. Great memories with the top down and several roadtrips.

2004 Acura TL
Silver, bought for $42k, traded-in to an Acura dealer in 2011 at 77k miles for a measly $7k due to an expensive power steering failure.
The dash of this car was the most well-laid-out that I had seen prior to the Model S. Was a great car till it didn't live up to Acura's reputation for reliability. Was supposed to last till I got my Model S but, didn't happen.

2005 BMW 325i
Barrique Red, bought for $40k to replace the Z3 as we were about to start a family, traded-in to a Mini dealer in 2008 at 25k miles for $21k.
Fun car but not as much fun as the Z3 was. Wife still bemoans losing this car.

2008 Mini Cooper Clubman S (wife's current car)
Hot Chocolate Brown with Silver trim, bought for $35k as a surprise 30th birthday gift for my wife who used to talk about owning a Mini someday.
Wife told me after I brought the car home that she may have preferred a copper sulphate blue or a red Mini. Oh well. She's determined to hold onto it (now at 49k miles) till I convince her to get a Gen III Tesla.

2013 Tesla Model S 60
Enough said!

1994 Geo Prizm (dark red)
wanted a Dodge Neon, but got talked into going with the more reliable Toyota engine

1999 Toyota Solara (bright red)
technically not mine, but my daily driver for 5 years

2004 Toyota Sienna (silver/ tan/ whatever)
heavier/ taller/ wider/ longer than a Model S. If I could parallel park that behemoth, I can parallel park a Model S without parking sensors :)

2013 Tesla Model S
a moderately optioned 60 kWh is still a splurge, but after 13 months and 16K miles, no regrets

1981 Mercury Capri, 4 speed, 2.3L inline 4 (sold because of upgrade)
1984 Mercury Capri, auto, 3.8L V6 (sold because it sucked)
1986 Mercury Capri, 5 speed, 5.0L V8 (sold because of upgrade)
1999 Ford Mustang Cobra, 5 speed, 4.6L DOHC V8 (sold due to financial and marital trouble)
1995 Jeep Wrangler S, 5 speed, 2.5L inline 4, 4WD (still own)
1981 DeLorean, 5 speed, 2.8L V6 (sold due to financial trouble)
1997 Cadillac Seville STS, auto, 4.6L V8 (sold because it was hard to work on and gave off a grandpa vibe)
2008 Jeep Wrangler, 6 speed, 3.8L V6, 4WD (sold because it was impractical for child seats)
2008 Jeep Liberty, auto, V6, 4WD (sold because of upgrade)
2011 Ford Mustang GT, 6 speed, 5.0L V8 (sold due to the start of the EV era, otherwise I might have kept this one and taken it to my grave)
2012 Ford Escape Hybrid, auto, 2.5L, 4WD (still own)
2012 Chevrolet Volt, auto, 1.4L inline 4 (still own, will eventually replace with full EV)

Planning to sell the Volt in a couple of years for a Tesla. Will keep the Escape. Will either keep the Wrangler or replace it with a newer model Wrangler.

Looking back, what's most interesting about this is that I have never sold a car because it got old (with the partial exception of the Seville, as I had to work on it largely because it was getting old). There was always some other reason.

shame about having to sell the delorean. think of that as an EV conversion!

Absolutely! If I was rich, I would seriously consider doing this. That said, there was an effort by the new DeLorean Motor Company (the have the old inventory of DeLorean parts and do some new parts creation and service) to build an electric DeLorean, but I'm not sure what the status of it is; haven't heard anything new in quite awhile. I know I've left some out, but I'll update as my memory recalls them. The main take away is a lot of 6 cylinder cars and most all were manual transmissions.

Doing this exercise made me realize I bought my first new car 40 years ago, I'm feeling old now.

(21) cars over 46 years
(15) manual transmissions
(10) V8
(6) 6 cylinder
(3) 4 cylinder
(2) electric

Hopefully - 2016 Tesla X85 which I'll keep for 20 years or more.

The 500e is what got me into Tesla. I was looking for a carpool vehicle and the 500e was practically free after all the tax credits. The range is only 85 miles, so that's why I looked at Teslas. I liked the Roadster so much, I decided to buy 3 of them.

hahah, same boat here. i used to commute in my supercharged miata. then the wife got a fit ev and i though, "wow, evs are pretty great."
i got the fiat 500e to drive around and started to get accustomed to the "nicer" interior. [compaired to a honda fit or mazda miata]
then i thought, "man, spending time in a nice interior is nice... my next car should be slightly luxurious."

and here i am, constantly reading TMC while saving up for the p85d...
