When "Full Self-Driving Hardware" started production?

I am a bit confused by "Hardware version 2 with AP Convenience features (For people that orderd before the reveal and paid for AP1 but will get AP2 hardware, you can pay the difference to upgrade to Enhanced AP.)"

What would be the actual installed hardware? New AP (without Full Autonomy upgrade) but software limited to AP 1.0 "Convenience" features?

Yep the full new hardware suite, 8 cameras, 40x faster processing, better ultrasound sensors, etc. but you would only get the features that Tesla is currently offering on AP 1.0 cars. You would miss out on the extra features in the Enhanced AP pack until you paid to upgrade.

Dang! So they are taking the cost different hit for those inbetweeners and using that data to better the Tesla neural network. So if you do nothing and take the AP1 on AP2 software you are getting a couple grand extra hardware for free and it seems probable that they could enable your AP2 features over-the-air even.

Another data point. My order confirmation date was Oct 3rd and my car will have AP2.0 hardware. I had already emailed my delivery contact to ask about it and so got a phone call on Friday to confirm the car would have the hardware and to upsell me to the new (currently vaporware) features. I also got the form email about doing the same today (Saturday).

I do hope they at least get back to AP1.0 parity by the end of December or I'll be sad since a part of the reason I'm upgrading my car was to get that. Even though I opted to pay for the full autonomy (because I'm a sucker for tech and I want to help push the technology), I'm very skeptical that Tesla will deliver that by the end of 2017 as they're claiming. They haven't exactly got a track record of coming close to their predicted timelines...

Do I understand you correct here?
  • Model S that entered production on 10th oct and later got the new AP Hardware?
  • Model X that entered production on 17th oct and later got the new AP Hardware?
No not really correct. First your car is body in work, painted and then final assembled. It has to be final assembled the 10th (model S) and 17th (model X) to get this new hardware. My entered final assembly on Friday the 14th of October. I do not have the AP2 according to my DS. Key date is when your car entered assembly. Kent in Sweden.

I missed out by a few days. However, to cancel will cost £5k by the time I have lost my deposit and paid for just the advanced AP. I don't see autonomous driving being given approval in the UK any time soon. I would only cancel if I was planning to run this car for 10 years. With the guaranteed re-sale on a PCP there is no realistic case to bin off that sort of money for possibly 12 months of use.
You need to look at the second hand value. This hardware will most probably live for 2-3 years...

Tesla/Elon never said they will deliver full autonomy on cars by the end of 2017. He said they will hopefully do the first fully autonomous cross country drive by the end of 2017. They did not put a timetable on releasing fully autonomous features only issued many disclaimers on the requirements that must be met for them to release the capabilities.

Thanks for the clarification!

So you ordered a Model X?
Did your status on mytesla match the emails and what your DS told?
Did you get status-emails from all steps your car went thru?

Yes, that's true. I had second thoughts on spending $3k now for a feature that won't exist for, at best, more than a year and paying financing on that. I'll just stick with the $2k enhanced AP upgrade for now. Although I'm not entirely clear on what extra you get for 'enhanced' vs AP1.0 functionality.

I am not sure about this. My Model S started production 10 or 11 Oct and finished build on 15 Oct. But my delivery specialist still says it is AP1.0. A few possibilities:

(1) The above dates are not absolute. (May be because Hong Kong is left hand drive?)
(2) My understanding of "Being produced" is wrong? I thought the date of final assemble should be near the end of production duration?
(3) My DS made a mistake.

I will not cancel anyway so will wait and see in a month or so.

Today I just got a call from my DS and was told that my car indeed has AP2.0! It will arrive in Hong Kong mid November. But as it has new hardware, the car will need to wait for government approval when it arrives Hong Kong. Hopefully I will get the car sometime December. (See my first post of this thread, as well as the previous post for information about my purchase.)

BTW, in "my tesla", it is still saying "Autopilot Hardware 1 with Convenience Features". But as my DS specifically called me to tell me that it is 2.0, I think that should not be a mistake.

From what we have heard there are technically 4 available combinations:
  1. Hardware version 1 with AP Convenience features
  2. Hardware version 2 with AP Convenience features (For people that orderd before the reveal and paid for AP1 but will get AP2 hardware, you can pay the difference to upgrade to Enhanced AP.)
  3. Hardware version 2 with Enhanced AP
  4. Hardware version 2 with Enhanced AP & Full autonomy.
You missed:
  • Hardware version 1 without AP Convenience features
  • Hardware version 2 without Enhanced AP or Full Autonomy
Also, your #3 and #4 will likely behave as if they have no hardware until December or later.
